Rapid restoration of nutrients and electrolytes after prolonged
starvation
could result in a life threatening condition characterized by sensory and neurological dysfunction and severe metabolic imbalance that has been designated as refeeding syndrome. Its diagnosis is frequently missed resulting in severe complications and even death. We describe a 25-years-old female patient with mental disorders and severe malnutrition who developed severe clinical manifestations and biochemical abnormalities characteristic of the refeeding syndrome, after restarting oral feeding on her own.
Schizophrenia
was later diagnosed. Increased awareness of this condition and its complications is necessary to prevent its detrimental complications.

The data of the "Little Ice Age" (1500-1850) in Croatia and those which applied to human health were especially emphasized were analyzed. They are some which stand out like: importance of the sort of soil and relief, the influence of cutting down of woods and cattle-breeding and especially the war which lasted for 250 years in the territory of Croatia. The important interactions between those parameters were defined. The important correlations were also defined between freezing and long winters as well as wet springs and summers which caused
starvation
, malnutrition and the increase of infant mortality and also epidemics with enormous psychological stress among people in that period. The result was witch-hunting and burning (which was also advocated in the other parts of Europe) and they sometimes reached the levels of madness. Considering that such events were unknown in the earlier periods (in such proportions) and that (even today) the influence of the slow virus is emphasized in connection to the etiology of
schizophrenia
so why should't it be supposed that the "Litlle Ace Age" could be the cause of the larger prevalence of
schizophrenia
in the teritory of Croatia.

The activating molecule in Beclin-1-regulated autophagy (Ambra1) is a highly intrinsically disordered protein best known for its role as a mediator in autophagy, by favoring the formation of autophagosomes. Additional studies have revealed that Ambra1 is able to coordinate cell responses to stress conditions such as
starvation
, and it actively participates in cell proliferation, cytoskeletal modification, apoptosis, mitochondria removal, and cell cycle downregulation. All these functions highlight the importance of Ambra1 in crucial physiological events, including metabolism, cell death, and cell division. Importantly, Ambra1 is also crucial for proper embryonic development, and its complete absence in knock-out animal models leads to severe brain morphology defects. In line with this, it has recently been implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders affecting humans, particularly autism spectrum disorders and
schizophrenia
. Here, we discuss the recent links between Ambra1 and neurodevelopment, particularly focusing on its role during the maturation of hippocampal parvalbumin interneurons and its importance for maintaining a proper excitation/inhibition balance in the brain.

Neurexins are neuronal adhesion molecules important for synapse maturation, function, and plasticity. Neurexins have been genetically associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and
schizophrenia
, but can have variable penetrance and phenotypic severity. Heritability studies indicate that a significant percentage of risk for ASD and
schizophrenia
includes environmental factors, highlighting a poorly understood interplay between genetic and environmental factors. The singular
Caenorhabditis elegans
ortholog of human neurexins,
nrx-1
, controls experience-dependent morphologic remodeling of a GABAergic neuron in adult males. Here, I show remodeling of this neuron's morphology in response to each of three environmental stressors (nutritional, heat, or genotoxic stress) when applied specifically during sexual maturation. Increased outgrowth of axon-like neurites following adolescent stress is the result of an altered morphologic plasticity in adulthood. Despite remodeling being induced by each of the three stressors, only nutritional stress affects downstream behavior and is dependent on neurexin/nrx-1 Heat or genotoxic stress in adolescence does not alter behavior despite inducing GABAergic neuron remodeling, in a neurexin/
nrx-1
independent fashion.
Starvation
-induced remodeling is also dependent on neuroligin/

and

, in addition, each have unique roles in remodeling induced by heat and UV stress. The differential molecular mechanisms underlying GABAergic neuron remodeling in response to different stressors, and the disparate effects of stressors on downstream behavior, are a paradigm for understanding how genetics, environmental exposures, and plasticity may contribute to brain dysfunction in ASDs and
schizophrenia
.
