The relation of specific MMPI scores to attention, concentration, and memory was assessed in an inpatient psychiatric sample diagnosed by DSM-III-R criteria as having
schizophrenia
, chronic undifferentiated type (n = 22);
schizophrenia
, paranoid type (n = 17); and schizoaffective disorder (n = 20). MMPI indices that are used widely to infer cognitive efficiency--including Scales 2 (Depression), 8 (
Schizophrenia
), SC-PT, D4 (Mental Dullness), SC2A (Lack of Ego Mastery, Cognitive), PSY (
Psychoticism
) and ORG (Organic Symptoms)--were investigated in relation to actual performance on Digit Span and subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS, Russell's Revision). Weak correlations emerged (maximum r = .31, p less than .05), which suggests that scores on these MMPI measures may not provide a reliable basis for inferring attention and memory functioning.

Since Bleuler's (1911) work on
dementia praecox
, numerous studies on associative disturbances in schizophrenics have been published. Methodological flaws and difficulties in interpreting the disturbances consistently have brought about a certain dilemma: they are unanimously considered a basic disorder in
schizophrenia
, but the problem of their reliable evaluation has remained unanswered. 43 schizophrenics, 15 affective psychotics, and 46 normals were investigated in order to compare different forms of the word association test (WAT). The schizophrenics gave less common responses than the normals in the free association task. However, the two groups differed more widely in their performance when asked to respond "individually", "commonly", or using a multiple-choice associative test. The affective psychotics were similar in their response behaviour, partly to the schizophrenics (free and common response conditions; multiple-choice test), partly to the normals (individual response condition). The relationship of the WAT to personality characteristics (Eysenck's
psychoticism
), the influence of psychopathology and the course of the disease, the patients' well-being and self-report of speech and thought disorders are discussed.

A laterality study in
schizophrenia
was carried out by measuring reaction time (RT) in a baseline condition and while subjects were engaged in a concurrent task. In the baseline condition, a clinical measure of
psychoticism
was associated with differential slowing with the right hand in schizophrenic dextrals but not in a control group of affective dextrals. The concurrent task suppressed the effect of
psychoticism
on RT performance. The results suggest that left-hemisphere deficits in
schizophrenia
are state dependent, and so not necessarily due to cortical dysfunction.

Research on the use of the Rorschach in the diagnosis of
schizophrenia
is reviewed. The analysis of this research (from that done by Rorschach to the most recent) indicates that schizophrenics do not respond in any unique fashion to any particular determinant or any particular card. The research also indicates that the computation of percentages and ratios, no matter how complex, does not facilitate the identification of a schizophrenic process. What the research does demonstrate is that
schizophrenia
, in its overt as well as latent and borderline forms, is detectable on the Rorschach through an analysis of the patient's thinking. The thinking of the schizophrenic reveals highly personal, illogical, and bizarre associations to the blots. This analysis of thinking is not accomplished through assessment of the formal properties of the blots, e.g., the analysis of response to color, movement, shading, the color-to-movement ratio, or form level (low form level proves to be a function of
psychoticism
, not
schizophrenia
, per se) but more in terms of the phenomenology of the responses.

Voluntary motor performance was used to investigate the hypothesis of a continuum of psychosis from depression through
schizophrenia
. 43 schizophrenic, 36 schizoaffective, 50 major depressive, 20 manic, and 25 nonpsychotic patient controls were tested for tapping speed, finger dexterity, hand grip strength, and neuropsychological motor performance. Sex was included as an independent variable, and the effects of psychotropic drugs were evaluated. A continuum of motor dysfunction from depression through
schizophrenia
was not obtained. A measure of current psychotic symptoms was not associated with motor or neuropsychological performance. Motor performance was significantly worse in schizophrenic, schizoaffective, and psychotic affective disorders, when compared to nonpsychotic affective disorders. In this final analysis,
psychoticism
was defined by history. The results are discussed in terms of the hypothesis that
psychoticism
is a trait that is independent of diagnosis.

Though self-report measures and clinician-based ratings are extensively used to document psychopathology, there has been little work examining the relationship between these different types of measurement techniques. The current work examined the relationship between the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) in patients with
schizophrenia
and schizoaffective disorder. Correlations were calculated in an initial exploratory sample, and a set of relationships was selected for confirmation in a second sample. The BPRS items of hallucinatory behavior and tension significantly correlated with MMPI measures of
psychoticism
. BPRS measures of hostility correlated with scale 4 (Psychopathic Deviate) of the MMPI. BPRS and MMPI measures of depression also were related. In contrast, BPRS and MMPI measures thought to reflect negative symptoms were uncorrelated. These results offer behavioral validity for the use of the MMPI in schizophrenic samples and suggest that the two measures tap similar as well as separable symptom constructs thought to be common in
schizophrenia
.

A young but chronic group of schizophrenic and affective disorders patients was tested for simple reaction time (RT) and RT while engaged in a concurrent task. The affective disorders patients were subdivided by the presence of psychotic features. The results show that extreme slowing of RT is due to
psychoticism
and is not characteristic of nonpsychotic affective illness. Extreme intrasubject variability, however, was specific to
schizophrenia
, and may be a trait marker of the disorder.

Auditory cortical evoked potentials of 20 schizophrenic patients with an acute exacerbation of the illness were investigated before neuroleptic medication and after remission of the acute symptoms, and compared with healthy controls matched for sex and age. Additionally, tests were conducted in 40 healthy volunteers to ascertain whether
psychoticism
or other personality factors were correlated with evoked potentials. The aim of the study was to test the overarousal hypothesis of
schizophrenia
and to control the effects of clinical state, neuroleptic medication and personality factors. Acutely ill schizophrenic patients had a shorter evoked potential N1 latency (Table 1). After remission of the symptoms under haloperidol N1 latency of the patients was no longer different from that of the controls. Patients after remission and on medication, however, had longer P2 and N2 latencies and a greater P2-N2 amplitude (Table 2).
Psychoticism
and extraversion were correlated negatively with amplitude data of components N1 and P2 in healthy volunteers. The results favor the overarousal hypothesis of
schizophrenia
. Haloperidol normalizes N1 latency in acutely ill patients. It's effect on later components of the evoked potentials seems comparable to a reduction in vigilance. Auditory evoked potentials might allow to follow up the effect of neuroleptics in acute
schizophrenia
. It seems necessary to consider personality factors when comparing patients with healthy controls in evoked potential studies.

Ninety-one alcoholic males aged 20-65 completed the MMPI. Their T scores on 10 clinical scales and 3 other indices were correlated with age. Seven of 13 correlations were statistically significant. There was a significant negative correlation between age and psychopathic deviance, paranoia,
schizophrenia
, and mania, and there was a significant positive correlation between age and hypochondriasis. Goldberg's indices showed that younger alcoholics' profiles resembled those of a sociopathic population as opposed to a psychiatric population and tended toward
psychoticism
rather than neuroticism. Results can assist practitioners in understanding and planning for a young clientele.

This study attempted to validate the
psychoticism
scale of the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) by comparing 31 schizophrenic patients with 98 non-schizophrenic patients. Unexpectedly, the schizophrenics did not exceed the non-schizophrenics on the
psychoticism
symptom dimension. None of a variety of controls and comparisons provided a basis for dismissing the finding. A rationale was introduced explaining why any attempt to match symptoms with the diagnosis of
schizophrenia
can at best meet with only qualified success.
