Numerous investigations have been conducted in an effort to determine the cause of the female urethral syndrome. Bacterial and anatomic causes rarely have been identified. Using the MMPI, we evaluated 56 women with thus syndrome and compared them with control patients of similar ages. Statistically significant increases in the F,
hysteria
, hypochondriasis, and
schizophrenia
scales were found in the patients with the female urethral syndrome. These scores suggest the presence of a psychophysiologic process in these patients.

The disappearance of hysterical madness, in the second decade of our century, was related to the emergence of the tentacular concept of
schizophrenia
. The case of Marie-Christine, a young girl whose delirium calls to mind the imaginary in witchcraft, prompts us to question upon the pertinency of abandonning the nosological entity "hysterical madness". We are attempting to show that, thanks to the Lacanian contribution in the theory of psychose, it is now becoming possible to distinguish between the latter and hysterical madness, this through the various and different aspects of the onset of the illness, of the fundamental mechanism, of the characteristics of the delirium, of the transference, of morbid anxiety.. That is why, to us, there seems to be a perceptible difference between the delirious hysteric who cannot manage to inhabit his sexed body, and the psychotic who has not succeeded in getting a grasp on the symbolic. Moreover, it seems that there is a close continuity from ordinary
hysteria
to hysterical madness, so that in the latter the delirium would not be the illness itself but only a symptom.

Ten patients discharged with the diagnosis of "sensitiver Beziehungswahn" were followed up 22--28 years after their discharge. In one case, the course of the illness indicates that the patient suffered from a manic-depressive psychosis, and in two cases, this diagnosis was likely. In two cases the disorder seemed definitely to be
schizophrenia
. One case was presumably a transient paranoid reaction. One patient was likely to have suffered from
hysteria
or epilepsy, three cases remained uncertain. The study did not prove suitable in the evaluation of the validity of "sensitiver Beziehungswahn" as a nosological entity, since at the time of diagnosis the patients only incompletely fulfilled the criteria set up the Kretschmer, but it throws light on the diagnostic practice and the tendency to a change between the classification into many independent disease entities and the subsequent inclusion into larger and fewer forms.

This study compared repeat gonorrhea patients with nonrepeat patients and control patients not having venereal disease. Focus was given to current intellectual and personality attributes as well as a broad spectrum of background factors in social, familial, educational, and sexual history. One-tailed t-tests were computed on the myriad permutations of patient group and the multiple derived scores from the personality and intellectual assessments. The results show no significant differences between the patients having their first infection of VD and the patients with repeat VD; however, when these 2 groups are pooled and compared with the controls, the VD patients are significantly higher on the depression,
schizophrenia
, psychasthenia,
hysteria
, and psychopathic scales. A similar pattern exists on reasoning ability and internal versus external locus of control. The VD patients are seen to perceive themselves as much more externally controlled than do the controls. It is concluded that the VD patients might profit from psychologic treatment; such treatment resources might aid not only in the control of repeat infections but in the general social integration of the patients.

The academic performance of 104 fourth-year medical students was assessed in relation to their sleep habits reported in a questionary and their scores on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. Poorer academic performance was related significantly to later times of waking up in the morning, particularly at weekends, and to subjectively poorer quality sleep, but not to the amount of sleep usually obtained. Poor academic performance was related also to scores on scales 3 (
hysteria
), 4 (psychopathic deviate) and 8 (
schizophrenia
) of the MMPI. Simple enquiries about sleep habits may make it easier for students who are at greatest risk of academic failure to be identified and helped.

In 57 patients with psicovegetative disorders and abnormal MMPI, abnormality in MMPI scales indicating hypochondriasis,
hysteria
, gender deviant, paranoia, psychastenia,
schizophrenia
, hypomania or introversion was accompanied by increased plasma catecholamine levels and/or responses to hypoglycemia or by an increased cardiovascular reactivity. A high depression scale was associated with lower plasma catecholamine levels. Blunted plasma growth hormone responses to hypoglycemia were found in abnormal hypomania scale, and augmented responses of plasma cortisol in abnormal
hysteria
or
schizophrenia
scales. Paranoia and hypomania traits correlated with absence of morning-evening differences in blood cortisol levels. Electrodermal responses compatible with increased sympathetic activity correlated with high
hysteria
, gender, paranoia,
schizophrenia
or hypomania MMPI scales. This study indicates that most psychopathological traits in MMPI are accompanied by humoral and/or electrophysiological signs of abnormality of the autonomic nervous system.

For the past twenty years women's complaints in the microelectronics industry have often been diagnosed as mass psychogenic illness, despite evidence of potential exposure to organic solvents, which have been associated with affect and mood changes. In the present study, the standard version of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was used to evaluate affective and personality disturbance among 63 former microelectronics workers (56 women and 7 men) over a two-year period of time. In both 1986 and 1988, the former workers obtained mean scale score elevations beyond two standard deviations above the normative sample (T = greater than 70) on the MMPI clinical scales of
schizophrenia
, hypochondriasis, psychasthenia, depression and
hysteria
. For most scales, 86-88 mean score differences did not attain the 0.05 significance level (two-tailed paired t-test) and no significant differences were observed for 86-88 comparison scale scores = greater than 70 (McNemar paired statistic). Although there were too few men to perform gender comparisons, men scored higher than women on 5 scales and all of the men had scores = greater than 70 on hypochondriasis, depression,
hysteria
, psychasthenia and
schizophrenia
. These findings reveal that these former microelectronics workers manifested affective and personality disturbances, consistent with organic solvent toxicity, which persisted over a two year period, indicating that they were not reactive, transient hysterical neurosis.

Ganser, in 1897, described a syndrome that the main symptoms were: Impaired consciousness, distorted communication (Maladjusted answers, looking like dementia nonsense). This syndrome was first included to
hysteria
. Gradually, the most striking aspect, approximate answers, has been stretch as regards to his pathogeny, to other concepts like post-traumatic disease, depression and especially
schizophrenia
. In this way, the Ganser's syndrome now cover a large scale of troubles related to perturbation of communication and with non psychopathologic relation to the primitive syndrome.

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was analyzed in 30 patients with fibromyalgia and 30 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Eighteen statements on the hypochondriasis, depression and
hysteria
scales and 14 statements on the
schizophrenia
scale differentiated patients with fibromyalgia and RA. Patients with fibromyalgia had higher scores on 29 of the 32 statements. Patients with RA seemed appropriately concerned about health and the possibility of additional illness. By contrast, patients with fibromyalgia were more symptomatic and presented a more unusual and complex syndrome, raising the possibility of a somatoform disorder and also greater personal distress in these patients. On the basis of analyzing the scores of patients with RA, one can also conclude that physical illness alone is not sufficient to drive MMPI profiles into the abnormal range. Patients with fibromyalgia who have a similar degree of pain intensity compared with patients with RA (61.3 vs 60 on a scale of 100) have significantly more abnormal MMPI, and analysis of their MMPI suggest a more complex somatic syndrome and greater psychological disturbance.

A recent review of the literature on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the MMPI has shown that all previously published studies have been limited to clinical groups whose trauma occurred in Vietnam combat. The purpose of this study was to test hypotheses that predict higher MMPI and PTSD scale scores among combat veterans who differ in degrees of noncombat traumas. Results support predictions. Those who reported more noncombat traumas attain significantly higher MMPI scores for scales F, Hypochondriasis,
Hysteria
, Psychopathic Deviate, Psychasthenia,
Schizophrenia
, Mania, Social Introversion, and an MMPI PTSD score (Keane, Malloy, & Fairbank, 1984). Moreover, noncombat effects are manifested differentially: Combat veterans with higher noncombat trauma evidence greater social withdrawal, whereas noncombat veterans who report higher noncombat trauma are characterized by higher anxiety. MMPI elevations were progressively higher as groups increased in degrees of combat and noncombat trauma: noncombat and low combat trauma veterans were the better adjusted, and combat veterans with higher noncombat trauma were the worst adjusted. Results provide descriptive validity for PTSD as a construct and underscore the importance of assessing frequency and intensity, as well as types of traumas and stresses, in the background histories of substance abusers and other clinical groups as well.
