Mouse monoclonal antibodies have been raised to the C-terminal region of rat type II voltage-dependent sodium channel. One of these, designated 13A4-G4, recognizes a 260 Kd putative sodium channel protein in human fetal brain, heart and skeletal muscle, at 14-18 weeks of gestation. Faint immunoreactivity is also present in human fetal kidney but none has been detected in human fetal liver, lung or spleen. The antibody reacts in both western blots and immunocytochemical preparations with the human neuroblastoma cell lines SK-N-SH and SK-N-MC, the

We present here the results of the largest study of childhood cancer and ethnic group in Britain, based on 7,658 children treated at paediatric oncology centres throughout the country. Incidence rates could not be calculated and so relative frequencies were analysed by the log-linear modelling method of Kaldor et al. (1990) with allowance made for regional variations in the ages and diagnostic groups of the children included in the study. Children of Asian (Indian sub-continent) and West Indian ethnic origin had similar patterns of incidence for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia to White Caucasians. There was a significant excess of Hodgkin's disease among Asian children compared with Caucasians with an estimated relative risk (RR) of 2.09; this excess was greatest in the 0-4 age group (RR = 6.67). among Asian children, each with a frequency around half that among Caucasians, whereas West Indians had a significant excess of Wilms' tumour (RR = 2.55). Asian and West Indian children each had a non-significant twofold RR for unilateral

Clones were isolated from two flow-sorted chromosome 13 libraries. Twenty-five clones were localized to various regions of chromosome 13, using a well-characterized panel of rodent x human hybrid cell lines. Eight DNA markers were localized to 13q14.2----q22, where the gene for Wilson disease, a recessive disorder of copper metabolism, was previously assigned. In 17 patients, the tumor developed in irradiated field. There was no evidence of the first tumor and only 1 patient was still under chemotherapy. Oncologic treatment was frustrating for these second tumors and 18 children died. Three are alive with no evidence of disease at 2 years, 2 years and 4 months and 3 years after diagnosis. One patient was lost to follow-up. It if postulated that second malignant tumors are consecutive to genetic predisposition and/or to the oncogenic effect of chemo and radiotherapy. The intensity of each treatment modality must be reduced as much as possible to obtain survival while limiting the secondary effects.

Studies were made on the appearance of second malignant tumors (SMT) in children followed in a pediatric hospital at metropolitan Santiago, Chile, between years 1968 and 1987. A retrospective analysis identified SMT in 7 of 430 patients who survived a childhood cancer (incidence 1.62%). An 8th patient was added, whose first neoplasm was treated in another hospital. Notwithstanding these kinds of outcome, benefits of therapy for patients with primary tumors greatly outweight the later risk of cancer induction in a small proportion of them.

Tumor cells in advanced stage neuroblastomas often show hsr/dms, in which N-myc amplification occurs. While near triploidy was regularly found in early-stage neuroblastomas, near-diploidy or near-tetraploidy was usually found in advanced stage tumors. Among various prognostic factors, N-myc copy numbers and tumor cell ploidies had the largest influence on the prognosis of neuroblastoma patients. Cytogenetic and molecular genetic analyses on tumor cells are becoming increasingly important for the diagnosis of pediatric solid tumors, and the prediction of the patients' prognosis.
