In an attempt to evaluate the histologic picture of what is shown on angiograms as neovascularity, several benign and malignant tumors were examined. New vessels (neovascularity) are large capillaries or sinusoids, and neither contain smooth muscle in their walls. The walls may contain some fibrous connective tissue. Puddling, laking, and staining represent the collection of contrast medium in small capillaries or sinusoids. Some tumors, such as
hemangioma
of the liver, cystadenoma of the pancreas, and angiomyolipoma of the kidney contained abnormal vascularity, but this was not composed of vessels which had arisen or developed anew, as there was smooth muscle in their walls, and this indicates that those vessels had been there from birth. In xanthogranulomatous
pyelonephritis
and chronic renal disease, the appearance of increased vascularity is the result of rearrangement of the normal vascular structures.

The angiographic findings in 13 patients with renal hemangiomas (one pararenal) are presented. The material suggests, contrary to earlier reports, a predominance for the female sex and the right kidney. Nine of the patients had macroscopic hematuria, of which five had renal colic. Obstruction was found at urography in seven cases. Renal angiography is the definitive diagnostic procedure and should be performed in all cases of unexplained macroscopic hematuria. Diagnosis may eventually be improved by pharmacoangiography or by hemodynamic studies using a dye dilution technique, as small arteriovenous shunts may remain undetected at angiography. Cardiac decompensation was not noted in our material, even though arteriovenous shunting within the
hemangioma
was seen in eight cases, suggesting that the shunt flow in renal hemangiomas usually does not reach levels high enough to impair the general circulation. Hypertension was present in only one patient, attributed to chronic
pyelonephritis
. Hematuria disappeared in all nine patients operated upon.

In this review article the benign tumors and tumor-like lesions of the adult kidney are discussed. The incidence of benign renal tumors is low, especially when compared to renal cell carcinomas, as most are detected incidentally or at autopsy. Some of these tumors, as their names imply, are unique to the kidney, e.g., renal adenoma, metanephric adenoma, renal oncocytoma, nephrogenic adenofibroma, mesoblastic nephroma, capsuloma, juxtaglomerular cell tumor, renomedullary interstitial cell tumor (medullary fibroma), cystic nephroma, cystic partially differentiated nephroblastoma, and cystic hamartoma of the renal pelvis, while others, such as angiomyolipoma, leiomyoma,

, lipoma, etc., are not unique to the kidney and show similar morphologic features in the other sites they affect. Of the tumor-like lesions, xanthogranulomatous

, malakoplakia, and renal cysts are the most common. The other entities, such as fibroepithelial polyp, are rare, most having been the topic of case reports. A transgenic mouse line carrying ornithine decarboxylase cDNA as the transgene under the control of a mouse mammary tumor virus long terminal repeat (MMTV LTR) promoter was generated in order to study whether ornithine decarboxylase transgene expression will have any physiological or pathological effect during the entire life of a transgenic mouse. The high frequency of infertile animals and the loss of pups made the breeding of homozygous mice unsuccessful. However, a colony of heterozygous transgenic mice was followed for 2 years. In adult heterozygous transgenic mice, ornithine decarboxylase activity was significantly increased in the testis, seminal vesicle and preputial gland when compared to non-transgenic controls. In contrast, ornithine decarboxylase activity was decreased in the kidney and prostate of transgenic mice. No significant changes in ornithine decarboxylase activity were found in the ovary and mammary gland and only moderate changes in ornithine decarboxylase activity were detected in the heart, brain, pancreas and lung. The most common abnormalities found in adult animals (12 males and 20 females) of the transgenic line were inflammatory processes, including pancreatitis, hepatitis, sialoadenitis and
