Tazarotene
0.1% gel and tretinoin 0.025% gel are both effective in the treatment of acne vulgaris. Results of a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, parallel-group study that compared the efficacy and tolerability of these drugs are presented here. A total of 143 patients with mild-to-moderate facial acne vulgaris were randomized to receive tazarotene 0.1% gel or tretinoin 0.025% gel once daily for 12 weeks.
Tazarotene
0.1% gel was more effective than tretinoin 0.025% gel in reducing the open comedo count (P < or = .05), the total noninflammatory lesion count (P < or = .05), and the total inflammatory lesion count (not statistically significant). At some time points, tazarotene was associated with increased irritation, but peeling, erythema, dryness, burning, and
itching
never exceeded trace levels. We conclude that tazarotene 0.1% gel is more effective than tretinoin 0.025% gel in reducing noninflammatory lesions and similarly effective in reducing inflammatory lesions.

The efficacy and tolerability of tazarotene 0.1% gel and tretinoin 0.1% microsponge gel were evaluated in a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, parallel-group study in patients with mild-to-moderate inflammatory facial acne vulgaris. A total of 169 patients were randomized to once-daily applications of one of these topical retinoids for 12 weeks. Both agents were associated with significant reductions from baseline in the noninflammatory and inflammatory lesion counts.
Tazarotene
treatment was associated with a significantly greater incidence of treatment success (defined as > or = 50% global improvement [67% vs 49%; P=.03]) and significantly greater reductions in overall disease severity (36% vs 26%; P=.02) and noninflammatory lesion count (60% vs 38% at week 12; P=.02) than tretinoin microsponge treatment. Both drugs were well tolerated, with mean levels of dryness, burning,
pruritus
, erythema, and peeling generally being no more than trace throughout the study. There were no clinically significant between-group differences in these measures of tolerability. Two patients in each group (2%) discontinued because of treatment-related adverse events. The mean amount of medication applied by the patients was 0.28 g per application with tazarotene and 0.41 g per application with tretinoin microsponge, resulting in cost-effectiveness ratios of $81.45 per treatment success with tazarotene and $108.24 per treatment success with tretinoin microsponge.
Tazarotene

Tazarotene
is a receptor-selective retinoid, which is efficacious in the treatment of patients with psoriasis, acne vulgaris, and photoaging. It normalizes keratinocyte differentiation, reverses keratinocyte hyperproliferation, and has anti-inflammatory effects. Clinical studies have shown that tazarotene 0.1% gel has greater comedolytic activity than tretinoin (Retin-A 0.025% gel, Retin-A Micro 0.1%) and adapalene (Differin) 0.1% gel. Although it is efficacious as monotherapy, tazarotene is more commonly used as part of combination therapy with a topical antibacterial in patients with acne vulgaris, and with a mid- or high-potency topical corticosteroid or with phototherapy in patients with psoriasis. Combination therapy enhances efficacy and tolerability.
Tazarotene
0.1% gel, used in combination with mometasone furoate 0.1% cream, was shown in psoriasis clinical trials to be more efficacious than calcipotriene (calcipotriol) ointment used twice daily, or mometasone furoate 0.1% cream used twice daily. Use of tazarotene in conjunction with broad band UVB, narrow band UVB or bath psoralens + UVA (PUVA) results in greater efficacy than with phototherapy alone.

Tazarotene
(Tazorac, Allergan, Inc.) is the first topical retinoid approved for the treatment of plaque psoriasis. It has a similar onset of action compared to potent topical steroids and has the advantage of a longer remission. The common side effects associated with the drug include skin irritation (including
pruritus
), erythema and a burning sensation. To overcome some of these shortcomings, it has been used in combination with steroids, calcipotriene and phototherapy. Combination therapy not only results in a decrease in adverse side effects, but also enhanced efficacy. Clinical study data have shown that combination therapy is just as important as tazarotene monotherapy, if not more.

Tazarotene
is a member of the new generation of receptor-selective, synthetic retinoids for the topical treatment of mild to moderate plaque psoriasis, acne vulgaris and photoaging. Though they are effective in monotherapy, clinical studies with a focus on novel combination treatments and a comparison of different agents for these skin disorders are accumulating. The concomitant use of tazarotene with a mid-potency or high-potency corticosteroid enhances the efficacy in psoriatic plaques and reduces the risk of steroid-induced skin atrophy. Combining phototherapy with adjunctive tazarotene accelerates the clinical response and reduces the cumulative UVB or PUVA exposure load.

A multicenter, double-blind, randomized, parallel-group trial compared tazarotene 0.1% cream with adapalene 0.1% cream, once daily for 12 weeks, in 173 patients with facial acne vulgaris.

was associated with a significantly greater incidence of patients achieving 50% or greater global improvement (77% vs. 55%, P < or = .01), and a significantly greater reduction in comedo count (median of 68% vs. 36%, P < or =.001, compared with adapalene. A significant between-group difference in baseline inflammatory lesion count precluded a comparison of efficacy against inflammatory acne. Tazarotene
(Tazorac) is a topical retinoid indicated for the treatment of plaque psoriasis. When used as monotherapy, topical tazarotene was effective at controlling signs and symptoms of plaque psoriasis, and had significantly lower post-treatment relapse rates than fluocinonide cream. The most common adverse events associated with tazarotene therapy are skin-associated events, such as
pruritus
, burning, and erythema. Combination therapy with tazarotene and mid-to-high potency topical corticosteroids generally resulted in a greater therapeutic effect than that with tazarotene alone, reduced the irritancy of tazarotene, and decreased the risk of post-treatment disease flare seen with corticosteroids; it also has the potential to reduce the degree of skin atrophy associated with topical corticosteroids. The combination of tazarotene and phototherapy also appears promising. Thus, tazarotene, as monotherapy or in combination with topical corticosteroids or UV light therapy, represents a useful treatment option in patients with plaque psoriasis.

Retinaldehyde is used in cosmetic preparations against acne. All topical retinoids are effective as single agents in mild to moderate acne but differ in efficacy and tolerability.

While pyogenic granuloma-like lesions are a well recognized side effects of systemic retinoids, to our knowledge in the literature there is only one reported case of pyogenic granuloma (PG) following topical application of tazarotene for scalp psoriasis. In this paper we report 2 cases of periungual PGs following application of topical tazarotene and we present a review of the literature.
