The small number of cases of Aujeszky's disease in goats referred to in the literature is stressed, and an outbreak in goats causing many deaths is reported. The flock of goats concerned was occasionally housed in a barn during the night in which there also were fattening pigs. The first deaths occurred without previous symptoms, the animals being found dead in the morning. In subsequent cases, symptoms were observed which continued for a few or several hours and consisted in agitation, lying down and rising, screaming plaintively,
profuse sweating
and, in the terminal stage, spasms and paralysis.
Pruritus
was not observed in any of the animals. Of the fifteen goats which had been housed in the pig-sty, thirteen died during ten days. In the same period, only one out of forty pigs died, and the others showed anorexia and somnolence for a couple of days but soon recovered. In two goats studied, the virus of Aujeszky's disease was isolated from the central nervous system. It is suggested that, in cases of disease or death in ruminants occurring in the proximity of pigs, there should primarily be a strong suspicion of Aujeszky's disease, regardless of the symptoms observed.

The silicon liner socket has been used in the trans-tibial prosthesis since the 1980s. Silicon liner sockets are sleeves of silicon material that are rolled onto the stump and fix the prosthesis to it. The producers of the liners propagate many advantages in their use i.e. better suspension of the prosthesis, protection of the stump skin and improved cosmetic appearance. This review was performed to find objective documentation in the literature in support of the advantages in prosthetic fitting and use of silicon liners. A medline search was performed with the key words: "silicon liner socket, Icelandic Roll On Silicon Socket (ICEROSS), trans-tibial prosthesis, lower leg prosthesis and stump sockets". Six articles remained after application of the selection criteria. In two studies clinical examination was done while in the rest questionnaires were used to collect data. The indication for amputation varied from vascular insufficiency, diabetes mellitus and infection to trauma. Most studies mentioned improved prosthetic suspension compared to the conventional supracondylar fitting. Also the walking performance improved with less use of walking aids. There were reports of positive but also negative effects on the skin such as
excessive perspiration
and
itching
. Patients had a general preference in prosthetic appearance in favour of the prosthesis with a silicon liner. Further research is needed with the use of objective clinical parameters and a homogenous study group objectively to find advantages in the use of the silicon liner socket in the trans-tibial prosthesis.

The relationship between extent of pesticide use and signs and symptoms of illnesses due to exposure was assessed in a cross-sectional survey of 631 farmers (537 men and 94 women) in South India. Responses to questionnaires showed that 433 farmers (68.6%) sprayed pesticides themselves and were thus directly exposed. More than 75% used moderately or highly hazardous pesticides; 88% used no protection while handling pesticides. About 50% of sprayers mixed different brands. Retailers were the source of information about pesticides for 56%. The farmers reported
excessive sweating
(36.5%), burning/stinging/
itching
of eyes (35.7%), dry/sore throat (25.5%), and excessive salivation (14.1%), all more prevalent among sprayers. Among men,
excessive sweating
and eye and throat problems were significantly associated with exposure. There is a need to raise farmers' and authorities' awareness of the need to use protective gear when handling pesticides.

Sensitization to latex seems to occur more frequently in women than in men. Obstetric and gynecological surgical procedures have recently been shown to be a common setting for latex anaphylaxis. We analyzed all the cases of anaphylactic reactions during 1240 cesarean sections in 2004; the patients were questioned for risk factors and underwent allergy testing for drugs and latex. Four patients had anaphylaxis under spinal anesthesia and in all cases it was due to latex allergy. Reported symptoms included facial edema,
profuse sweating
,
itching
, generalized erythematous rash and hypotension. Only one patient manifested a severe reaction which included bronchospasm, dyspnea, tachypnea and anaphylactic shock, requiring orotracheal intubation and epinephrine. Our data showed a high incidence (1:310) of intraoperative latex anaphylactic reactions in the one-year study period. This may be related to the very specific population (all women) in a very specific setting (obstetrics). To prevent anaphylactic reactions during obstetric surgery it is important to identify potential risk factors to include, for example atopy, adverse reactions to foods and latex items. If latex allergy is confirmed or strongly suspected, patients should be managed in a latex-safe environment. Premedication with antihistamines and steroids might be useful to further reduce the risk. After the delivery, specific desensitization may represent a good therapeutic option.

The aim of the present work was to study clinical course of depression in patients (pts) with diabetes mellitus (DM) and non-proliferative retinopathy (NPR). In total, 250 pts with DM were included into the study, and more separated into 2 groups (Gr): Gr.1 (n=115)--pts with DMT1 and DMT2 without NPR; mean ABP - SBP < or = 130 mmHg/DBP < or = 85 mmHg. Fundus photography grade 10/10. Gr.2 (n=135)--was subdivided in Gr.2a (n=43), pts with DMT1; fundus photography grade from > or = 20/10 to < or = 47/47; mean ABP - SBP < or = 130 mmHg/DBP < or = 85 mmHg; Gr.2b (n=92) pts with DMT2 fundus photography grade from > or = 20/10 to < or = 47/47, mean ABP - SBP < or = 160 mmHg/DBP < or = 90 mmHg. To assess depression severity a 12-question Screening Questionnaire was used, results were compared to Beck's and Hamilton's Depression and Sheehan's Anxiety Scales. According to Sheehan's Scale pts with DMT1 most often complained of
profuse sweating
(66+/-16%), while in DMT2 more often
itching
and numbness in different parts of the body (72+/-11%) were registered. According to the Beck's scale the most frequent and acute symptoms were: depressed mood, sadness (100-10%), disappointment about their future (78+/-14%), inferiority feeling (90+/-10%), irritation (89+/-11%), feeling of being unlucky (75+/-15%), decreased working ability (78+/-14%). DMT1 was characterized by light while DMT2 by moderate depression. Thus, depression is one of the most severe DM complications; it has negative effect both on pts compliance and quality of his/her life. When DM is complicated by NPR depression takes the most sever form (psychopathologic symptoms are observed in 85.9% of cases).

Hyperhidrosis is a distressing disorder characterised by
excessive sweating
. Whereas some cases are secondary to underlying conditions, primary hyperhidrosis is the more common form affecting around 3% of the population. Typically starting in childhood or adolescence, primary hyperhidrosis has a significant impact on an individual's quality of life and self-esteem, which is similar to that of more well recognised skin conditions, such as psoriasis, severe
pruritus
and acne. Treatment options for primary hyperhidrosis are varied, including topical treatments, Botulinum toxin A, systemic medication, iontophoresis and surgery; however, each method has drawbacks that are discussed in this article. Case examples within the article illustrate the potential of several of these treatments. Particular issues surrounding the treatment of children and adolescents with this condition are also discussed.
