Protective latex surgical gloves and examination gloves may cause allergic contact dermatitis, mainly due to rubber chemicals used in the manufacturing process. Latex proteins in the gloves may cause contact urticaria and even anaphylactoid reactions. Eighty-eight dentists and other members of the dental team were tested for contact allergy to thiuram- and mercapto-derivatives, and for contact-urticaria to latex proteins. All but 5 persons used gloves at least periodically. Fifty-one of 87 of the persons who answered a questionnaire had or had had symptoms from the skin on the hands, but in only 3 cases could allergy to the gloves be proved. Women had more often symptoms than men, and female dentists with symptoms used gloves more often and for longer periods than female dentists without symptoms. It can be concluded that redness of the skin,
itching
, vesicles and eczema are common symptoms reported in connection with use of gloves, but proved allergy to the gloves is rare. Most symptoms are supposed to be due to
skin irritation
from the gloves in addition to irritative exposure from handwashing and other chemical irritants in dental work. The nature of the irritative effect from gloves is only partly known and should be studied further.

In 18 atopic eczema patients with active symptomatology and 15 control subjects a comparison of reactivity to psychological stressors was made. The physiological measures were heart rate, peripheral vasomotor response, skin resistance level, spontaneous fluctuations of the skin resistance, and forearm skin temperature. In addition, self-ratings of subjective state, situational anxiety, and social anxiety were assessed. Mental arithmetic performed undisturbed and in distracting conditions, and anticipation of the latter and of having to speak in public served as stressors. The results show higher reaction values of the eczema patients for heart rate, peripheral vasomotor response, fluctuations of skin resistance and subjective tension. A subgroup of patients with extreme
skin irritation
(
itching
) reacted with an elevation of skin temperature, in contrast to control subjects and patients with less marked
itching
, in whom skin temperature dropped slightly. The results suggest that atopic eczema may have a psychophysiological component.

In the present study the beta-adrenoreceptor blocking effects of acute and repeated transdermally delivered mepindolol (20 mg/9.8 cm2 patch) and propranolol (40 mg/9.8 cm2 patch) on supine and stimulated circulatory function (isoprenaline infusion, isometric hand grip, delayed auditory feed-back) in nine healthy male volunteers were assessed. The study was conducted in a placebo-controlled double-blind cross-over fashion, with three one-week treatment courses randomly allocated in a period-balanced fashion. Treatment phases were separated by a one-week wash-out phase. The placebo and mepindolol patch were well tolerated, whereas the propranolol patch caused
skin irritation
and
itching
in most subjects, and even vesicular lesions in 3/9 subjects. Acute and repeated 24 h application of the propranolol patch caused only small and clinically not relevant changes of heart rate and blood pressure. Acute application of the mepindolol patch induced only mild blunting of the diastolic blood pressure and heart rate responses to isoprenaline i.v. infusion at 8 h. However, the isoprenaline responses were nearly abolished after one week repeated 24 h application of the mepindolol patch, in a stable and protracted fashion. The circulatory responses to isometric handgrip and delayed auditory feedback tended to be reduced, but to a smaller extent than for the isoprenaline test. Repeated application of mepindolol via the investigational device for transdermal drug delivery (BIO TSD) thus resulted in stable and protracted beta-adrenoreceptor blockade.

Rhodamine B is a red colored dye that is used in cosmetic products. We report a case of 17 patients who were exposed to aerosolized Rhodamine B inside a maintenance shop. The mean duration of exposure was 26 minutes (range 2-65). Sixteen of the patients (94%) complained of acute symptoms including: burning of the eyes (82%), excessive tearing (47%), nasal burning (41%), nasal
itching
(35%), chest pain/tightness (35%), rhinorhea (29%), cough (29%), dyspnea (29%), burning of the throat (24%), burning/pruritic skin (24%), chest burning (12%), headache (6%), and nausea (6%). All of the patients had resolution of their symptoms within 24 hours (less than 4 hours in 63%). Acute exposure to Rhodamine B resulted in transient mucous membrane and
skin irritation
without evidence of serious sequellae.

Occupational exposures to pyrethroids have been associated with skin sensory effects characterized by transient
itching
/tingling sensations. This effect had not been detected in "Draize"
skin irritation
tests and exists in the absence of visible
skin irritation
. The objective of this investigation was to develop an animal model to study this phenomenon. Guinea pigs were treated with pyrethroid solutions on one side of their shaved back and control substances on the other side. The animals responded by licking, rubbing, scratching, or biting the test sites and activity was quantified by counting the number of times the animals responded to pyrethroid or control treated sites. Animals responded to pyrethroid more than to control substances and this behavioral activity was apparently maximum during the first hour and essentially over by the fourth hour after treatment. The sensory response did not directly correlate with overt visible signs of
skin irritation
. However, a chemical irritant (oil of mustard) was able to restimulate the behavioral activity when applied within 24 hr after pyrethroid application. Skin sensory stimulation produced by cyano-containing synthetic pyrethroids was significantly greater than that produced by a non-cyano-containing pyrethroid. This behavioral model provides a quantitative means to evaluate pyrethroid nonerythematous skin sensory stimulation.

A report is given on a travel to Elba, the largest island of the Tuscany archepelago (Italy) and a holiday place preferred by German speaking tourists. In the last years some cases of visceral leishmaniasis and oriental sores, respectively, were introduced to Germany from this island. The geoecological background of this development was investigated. Reproduction and spread of the most abundant sandfly species Phlebotomus (Laroussius) perniciosus favour ruinous buildings, actually used as animal shelters sometimes in the immediate vicinity of new tourist bungalows. A typical allergic response upon sandfly bites occurs in almost all of the newcomers. This
skin irritation
is wellknown as urticaria multiformis endemica of Harara. Local people and tourists connect this
itching
disorder with certain types of sun trauma and do not take notice of their real etiology. Cortisone treatment in severe cases may facilitate the start of simultaneously transmitted leishmaniasis. The possible epidemiological role, which the dog travelling to southern countries in connection with leishmaniasis plays, is considered.

A single application of 10% crotamiton lotion cured 96% of the 49 patients treated for pediculosis capitis. Only two (4%) patients needed a second application. Following crotamiton application,
pruritus
regressed completely in 98% of the patients. An adverse effect, namely localized
skin irritation
leading to interruption of the trial treatment, was reported in one patient.

Workers in a Swedish spice factory (n = 70), and in the office (n = 23) of the same company, were investigated by questionnaire regarding skin symptoms. In a 2nd part of the study, subjects reporting skin symptoms were examined and investigated by patch and prick testing. Skin symptoms were reported by 1/2 the factory workers.
Pruritus
and
skin irritation
, particularly from cinnamon powder, were common. Patch test reactions to cinnamic aldehyde were found in 11/25 factory workers, but in several cases, the nature of the reactions was difficult to evaluate. Irritant patch test reactions were seen from powders of cardamom, paprika and white pepper. On prick testing, 6/25 workers reacted to cinnamic aldehyde. The results illustrate the difficulties of patch testing with spices and indicate the need for further research and validation of methods.

At a public office with a staff of 129, twenty people work for short periods with large amounts of self-copying paper. A controlled study has shown a significantly higher incidence of
pruritus
and nasal congestion amongst staff exposed to large amounts of self-copying paper or its components, no drying of the skin after working with the paper and no increased degree of irritation of the skin were found in the study group at dermatological examination. No differences were found between the study group and the control group with respect to allergy or skin status or working conditions apart from the contact with self-copying paper. The study confirms that contact with fresh self-copying paper may result in
pruritus
and
skin irritation
, but allergy to the paper or microcapsule contents could not be demonstrated in this study.

Process and office workers at a Swedish paper mill (n = 274) and dairy workers (n = 45) were investigated with questionnaires regarding skin symptoms. In the second part of the study, subjects reporting skin symptoms and a random sample of subjects without symptoms were examined and investigated with patch testing.
Pruritus
and
skin irritation
probably related to exposure to dust were found. The results do not indicate an increased prevalence of contact allergy. In two cases, positive patch test reactions to paper size (rosin) and a slimicide, mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), were noted.
