Scabies is a common
infestation
caused by the human
itch
mite Sarcoptes scabiei. Small outbreaks in communities or hospitals are not uncommon, but are rarely documented. In this paper, we report on a nosocomial outbreak of scabies originating from a patient with Norwegian scabies at the Intensive Care Unit in Taiwan Provincial Tainan Hospital. Twenty-nine individuals including four inpatients and 25 hospital personnel were involved. The diagnosis was based on history, clinical findings or a positive skin scraping. Unfamiliarity with the clinical manifestations delayed the diagnosis and the highly contagious nature of Norwegian scabies precipitated this outbreak. Early initiation of effective control measures with extensive therapeutic and prophylactic treatment of all contacts resulted in successful eradication of the outbreak.

A multicenter, randomized, investigator-blind controlled trial was conducted to compare the safety and efficacy of a single, whole-body application of 5% permethrin cream with that of 1% lindane lotion for the treatment of scabies in 467 patients. At 14 +/- 3 days after treatment, the mean active lesion count decreased from pretreatment levels of 85 (range, 4 to 600) in both treatment groups to 14 (range, 0 to 133) in the permethrin group and to 15 lesions (range, 0 to 500) in the lindane group. At 28 +/- 7 days after treatment, complete resolution had occurred in 181 (91%) of 199 patients treated with permethrin and in 176 (86%) of 205 patients given lindane.

In order to evaluate the effectiveness of 1% gamma-BHC emulsion against head louse

, 1,527 school children were examined using observation by ocular and combing methods were used and infested children were treated with three regimes of 1% gamma-BHC emulsion. An overall
infestation
rate of 40% was found. The
infestation
rate was highest in Tung-Kuang Primary School (59%) and lowest in Chien-Hua Primary Schools (7%). The rate was highest among school children grade 2 (45%) and lowest in grade 3 (35%). The rate of girls (65%) was much higher than that of boys (9%). A total of 443 lice were collected from 78 infested school girls: 56 males, 59 females, and 328 nymph. The average number of head lice in each infested girl was 5.7. Follow-up examination was conducted one week after treatment. The cure rates for dosages of 10.0 ml, 5.0 ml, and 2.5 ml 1% gamma-BHC emulsion were 96%, 88%, 68% for girls and 100%, 92%, and 33% for boys, respectively. Only mild and transient

and burn sensation of scalp were reported by a few children. The overall

rate 5 months (April-September 1981) after treatment was 23% (286/1,245). The rate of girls decreased from 65% to 40% and that of boys from 9% to 3%. Results of the present study indicates that 1% gamma-BHC emulsion is an effective pediculicide at a dosage of 5 ml or 10 ml. However, the overall

Mite infestation in laboratory mice is a common, but troublesome problem in animal facilities. Recommended treatment regimens are frequently ineffective because of the short period of exposure to the control agent. In an effort to develop a time-release approach, we have investigated the use of Dursban granules applied in animal bedding. Initial toxicity studies indicated that this pesticide can be added to shoebox cage litter at levels three times that used for outdoor application (6 g per 27 by 48 cm shoebox cage) without producing clinical signs of toxicity. Metabolism studies demonstrated that although individual mice showed decreased brain acetylcholinesterase activity following treatment, liver cytosolic glutathione-S-transferase, liver microsomal aminopyrine N-demethylase, or aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase were not induced after 1 week of exposure. and other behaviors of pigs for 9-13 wks after weaning were evaluated. Regardless of the dose of mites inoculated, pigs fed ad lib. spent approximately 60% of their time at rest. Within their average day, pigs spent more time eating in morning and evening, were more active and pruritic at midday, and rested more and spent the least time drinking water at night. Mite infestations increased total activity and time spent scratching and rubbing. Infested pigs sprayed with water rubbed and scratched 4-10 times more frequently than those left undisturbed or disturbed by other means. Pigs receiving inoculating doses of 1,000 mites became more pruritic than pigs receiving 100 mites, and both groups developed more

To discover whether the immune system of Iberian-breed pigs exerts any adverse action on Ornithodoros erraticus, 3 pairs of pigs were subjected to a weekly

over 12 wk with 1,000 larvae, 500 nymphs-1, or 200 adults. Each pair was bitten by only 1 developmental stage. Batches of parasites identical to the foregoing ones were fed weekly on control swine. In none of the 10 parameters studied for each of the batches fed weekly was any significant difference found that could be attributed to the state of sensitization of the animals in which, in a previous study, the presence of high titers of anti-O. erraticus antibodies was found.
