Sarcoptic mange is one of the common swine diseases worldwide. Although mange-free populations can be established with caesarean derived stock, by herd repopulation programmes or by eliminating mange with ivermectin, mange remains prevalent in many countries. Field and experimental studies indicate that hypersensitive mange is detrimental to performance of growing pigs. Typically, producers tolerate mange infestation in their herds and control measures are often haphazard. This tolerance to mange infestation is attributable to the covert nature of the losses (reduced growth rate and feed efficiency without mortality) and to the fact that clinical signs of hypersensitive mange (pruritus) are usually viewed as normal. Lack of tools to evaluate mange severity in pigs and to demonstrate its importance has hindered the efforts of veterinarians to control the disease. Traditionally, veterinarians have used slaughter inspections to assess respiratory diseases such as enzootic pneumonia and atrophic rhinitis. Much of the value of slaughter inspections is as a tool with which veterinarians can educate and motivate their clients to improve disease control measures. The potential for evaluating hypersensitive mange by inspecting slaughtered pigs for lesions of papular dermatitis was recognised some time ago, but quantitative evaluation of the reliability of this approach has been lacking. We have conducted several studies in Australia, the USA, Canada, Europe and Latin America to evaluate associations between Sarcoptes infestation and the severity of papular dermatitis at slaughter, using a simple ordinal scale for classifying carcasses. Our initial field and experimental data in Australia indicated the specificity of localised dermatitis to be in the order of 75-80%, but that the generalised dermatitis was highly specific (> 98%) for mange. Subsequent studies in the US Midwest yielded almost identical results, and indicated that the method may also have some utility for surveillance of mange-free herds. Results from other locations invariably have shown significant associations between dermatitis lesions and mange infestation. Relative to other methods such as skin scrapings and monitoring pruritus, this method is simple and relatively objective, and should be considered for routine inclusion in slaughter inspection protocols.

Five of 16 cats belonging to the same owner were brought to the veterinary hospital because of a 30-day history of signs of intense pruritus and alopecic and erythematous areas with bloody crusts. Notoedric mange was diagnosed and confirmed by microscopic examination of skin scrapings of all 5 cats. The remaining cats did not have clinical signs of mange, and Notoedres cati were not observed after microscopic examination of skin scrapings. A decision was made to treat all 16 cats with doramectin subcutaneously. In each cat, 0.1 ml of a 1% solution of doramectin was administered s.c. Body weights ranged from 2.9 to 7.1 kg (6.4 to 14.2 lb) in the 16 cats and the final doses varied from 143 to 345 micrograms/kg (65 to 157 micrograms/lb) of body weight, with a mean (+/- SD) of 270.4 +/- 64 micrograms/kg (122.9 +/- 29.1 micrograms/lb). The mean dose for the 5 affected cats was 292.2 +/- 44.8 micrograms/kg (132.8 +/- 20.4 micrograms/lb), with a range of 208 to 333 micrograms/kg (94.6 to 151.4 micrograms/lb). Lesions began to recede 1 week after treatment. Fifteen days after treatment, all 5 affected cats were clinically normal. Findings in our cats suggest that a single mean dose of doramectin of approximately 290 micrograms/kg is sufficient to control notoedric mange in cats.

Reports on the effects of mange on the production performance of pigs are conflicting. So far, studies have used experimental infections, by depositing encrusted lesions from chronically infected pigs into the ears of experimental pigs. However, this is a poor representation of what happens under natural field conditions. The purpose of our study was to quantify the effects of sarcoptic mange on production performance and pruritus in pigs that were infected by contact with S. scabiei var. suis-infected pigs. A total of 80 piglets were matched by sex and weight and randomly divided between experimental and control compartments. In the experimental compartment, each of three naturally S. scabiei var. suis-infested pigs were randomly allocated to three pens with 13 susceptible pigs each. From day 0 to 35, the growth performance of pigs in the experimental compartment was significantly (P=0.04) worse (35 g/d) than of pigs in the control compartment. From day 35 to 112, there was a statistical trend (P=0.10) that the growth performance of pigs in the experimental compartment was lower (50 g/d) than that of pigs in the control compartment. For the complete fattening period (0-112 or more days), the growth performance of pigs in the experimental compartment was significantly (P=0.05) worse (41 g/d) than that of pigs in the control compartment. Mean feed conversion ratio (kg feed per kg gain) was 2% higher in the experimental compartment compared with the control compartment. Pigs in the experimental compartment had a nine times (95% CI: 2 - 44) higher chance of showing pruritic behaviour than pigs in the control compartment.

Sarcoptic mange is a cause of pruritic skin disease in domestic dogs and a wide range of wildlife species. We describe sarcoptic mange in free-ranging raccoons (Procyon lotor). Three adult raccoons from upper Wayne County, Michigan (USA), were captured, killed, and submitted for diagnostic evaluation. The animals were intensely pruritic, and two had advanced alopecic and crusting lesions over their dorsum and hind limbs. Skin scrapings and skin biopsies revealed crusting and hyperkeratotic dermatitis with high numbers of Sarcoptes scabiei adults, larvae, nymphs, and eggs. These raccoons were not otherwise debilitated, with minimal internal parasites, good body condition, and no evidence of infectious bacterial or viral diseases. Because sarcoptic mange is highly contagious and affects many species, including humans, transiently, it is important that wildlife biologists and rehabilitators include sarcoptic mange in their differential list for raccoons exhibiting pruritus and alopecia.

A cross-sectional survey was performed in 110 randomly selected pig-breeding farms of southern Hesse, Germany to estimate the prevalence of ectoparasite infestations and to find possible risk factors. Ear scrapings of, if available, 10 sows per farm were examined for Sarcoptes scabiei var. suis (De Geer) (Acaridida: Sarcoptidae) by the potassium hydroxide digestion method, and a total of 2754 sows was inspected for skin lesions and infestations with Haematopinus suis (L.) (Anoplurida: Haematopinidae). Data on farm profiles and sows were collected by a questionnaire. In total, 19.1% and 2.5% of the sows were found to be infested with S. scabiei or H. suis, respectively. The percentage of mite or louse infestation was significantly higher in sows showing pruritus than in those without skin lesions. Both ectoparasite infestations were related neither to the age of sows nor their reproduction status, nor to the time interval to last ectoparasite treatment. Using farms as the unit of analysis, the estimated prevalence of mange mite and louse infestations was 45.4% and 14.5%, respectively. There was no significant association between the presence of S. scabiei and H. suis in the farms. Risk factors for S. scabiei infestation were mixed housing of dry and nursing sows in the same unit (vs. separate housing) and straw bedding (vs. strawless). For louse infestation, only mechanical cleaning of stable units (vs. additional use of disinfection methods) and pasturing of gilts and dry sows were identified as risk factors. The economic loss by S. scabiei infestation in the study population was assessed at euro 4200 per affected farm and year on average.

At Kafr El-Sheikh province, Egypt, out of 117 examined drafting horses, mites were detected in 20 (17.09%) horses. The recovered mites were 14 Chorioptes, four Psoroptes and two Sarcoptes whereas mites were not detected in four cases clinically showed typical mange lesions. Interestingly, neither the age nor the sex of the examined horses had a clear influence on the prevalence of the infection. Clinical signs observed in mange infested horses were in the form of irregular skin lesions, severe itching and sometimes biting of affected skin areas and decrease feed consumption. The skin lesions mainly start as erythematous area followed by developing of papules and crust formation. Skin scratches as a result of traumatized lesions usually occurred. Hair was lost on the affected parts developing irregular alopecic areas. Distribution of the lesions was varied according to the type of mite. Chorioptic mite was detected in para-anal fold, distal portion of legs and tail lesions, Psoroptic mite was detected in withers, mane, shoulder and flank lesions whereas Sarcoptic mite was isolated mainly from lesions on the head and neck. Complete clinical and parasitological cure for mite infestation were obtained within 2 weeks in both moxidectin and ivermectin treated groups with 100% recovery rate. Our results indicated that moxidectin oral gel is effective and good alternative for the treatment of chorioptic mange in horse to avoid drug resistance that may develop as a result of the intensive use of ivermectin alone for long periods.

Four new cases of sarcoptic mange in cats are described. Two cats resided in areas known to be frequented by foxes, another cohabited with a dog recently diagnosed with sarcoptic mange, while the final cat lived with a mixed breed dog that had been treated for sarcoptic mange 7 months previously. Three cases were diagnosed on the basis of characteristic mite size and morphology in skin scraping from representative lesions, situated on the head (two cases) or head and distal hind limbs (one case). Mites were highly mobile and abundant in all instances, and easily detected also in skin biopsy specimens procured from two cases. Eosinophilic inflammation, hyperkeratosis and parakeratosis were prominent in the tissue sections. In the remaining case, the diagnosis was presumptive, based on characteristic lesions, cohabitation with a canine scabies patient and positive response to scabicide therapy. Pruritus was not a prominent clinical feature in any patient and was considered to be absent in three of the four cases. Lesions in three cats with long-standing disease were reminiscent of crusted scabies (synonym: Norwegian scabies, parakeratotic scabies) as seen in human patients. In three cases, in-contact human carriers developed itchy cutaneous papular lesions. Two cases responded promptly to therapy with systemic avermectin drugs, while one responded to topical treatment with lime sulphur and the remaining cat received both a lime sulphur rinse and ivermectin. Sarcoptic mange should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cats with non-pruritic crusting skin diseases, especially when there is contact with foxes or dogs, and when owners have itchy papular lesions.

The authors report 10 cases of localised sarcoptic mange in dogs. In each case, lesions were localised to one precise area of the skin. Pruritus was present in nine cases and absent in one. Affected areas were the feet (one case), the face and/or the pinnae (six cases), the abdominal skin (one case), the flank (one case) and the lumbar area (one case). The types of lesions were erythema, papules, lichenification, scales, crusts and alopecia. Parasites were found in all cases except one, in which anti-immunoglobulin G Sarcoptes serology was positive. The acaricidal treatments given were lindane, ivermectin or selamectin and were all successful.

This study was performed to determine the frequencies and specificities of IgG antibodies binding to component of Sarcoptes scabiei extracts in swine with hypersensitive and chronic mange. The hypersensitive form is characterised by pruritus and the presence of small red papules over the flanks and belly. The chronic form is characterised by crusts, which contain large numbers of mites and are attached to the skin; the lesions are most commonly found on the internal pinna extending into the auditory canal. S. scabiei mite extract was separated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis with subsequent immunoblotting. IgG-binding proteins were detected with individual sera from 30 hypersensitive and 21 chronically infected pigs; eight "Specific Pathogen Free" pigs were used as negative controls. Seven protein bands with molecular weights ranging from >220 to 30 Kilodalton (KDD) (>220, 218, 110, 80, 66, 52, 36 KDD) strongly bound with IgG antibodies; five out of these seven components (218, 110, 80, 66, 52 KDD) bound also with sera from negative pigs. There is a statistically significant difference in the antigenic recognition spectra between hypersensitive and chronically infected pigs; component of >220 KDD is more frequently recognized by chronically infected pigs (P=0.0006, chi(2)=11.74), in contrast component of 36 KDD is more frequently recognized by hypersensitive pigs (P=0.001, chi(2)=10). Our results clearly indicate there is a difference in the reactivity to antigenic peptides/proteins of S. scabiei mite between hypersensitive and chronically infected pigs, and revealed that only two antigens may be considered S. scabiei-specific and used for diagnostic purposes in swine.
