In 24 girls with atopic dermatitis and a history of irritation to wool, more intense
itching
was provoked on normal skin on the abdomen by a material with coarse wool fibres (36 microns) than with thinner fibres (20 microns). The probability of the materials causing
itching
could be predicted by the girls by handling the materials.

Allergic contact dermatitis is reported in a patient using a condom with the spermicidal lubricant Tectol. A 36 year old female, with no history of dermatitis or
pruritus
of the vagina or vulva, experienced itchy dermatitis 24-48 hours after her partner used a Durex Top Safe contraceptive containing Tectol. The dermatitis appeared on the neck, upper legs, underarms, and trunk area. When another contraceptive was used Durex Featherlite (without Tectol), the patient experienced no problems. Patch tests concluded that the Tectol lubricant was the cause for the reaction in the patient. Transmission of the lubricant to the patient occurred when the patient's partner, after handling the contraceptive (Durex Top Safe) during intercourse, placed his hands on the patient's body. To which exact element of Tectol the patient was sensitized could not be determined as the patient refused further treatment.

In an attempt to provide clinically relevant data regarding both dermatologic disease and skin care needs in the elderly, 68 noninstitutionalized volunteers, aged 50 to 91 years (average age, 74 years), were enrolled in a study consisting of a 33-item questionnaire and a total cutaneous examination. Two thirds of the entire group and 83% of the 23 octogenarians reported medical concerns regarding their skin, with
pruritus
as the most frequent complaint. On examination, all subjects had at least one cutaneous abnormality, and symptomatic and/or medically significant disorders were present in 64.7%. In decreasing order of prevalence, disorders for which dermatologic therapy was judged desirable included actinic keratoses, tinea pedis,
contact dermatitis
, seborrheic dermatitis, stasis dermatitis, and skin cancer. Overall, there was rather poor correlation between the subjects' complaints and perceptions and objective physical findings. Further, despite a high prevalence and long average duration of dermatologic concerns, very few subjects had consulted a physician for these problems, and no complaints other than "rashes" and
pruritus
had ever been discussed with any health care professional. Review of skin care regimens revealed substantial limitations with regard to bathing, shampooing, and nail care, particularly for subjects aged 80 years or older. Despite a small sample size and possibility of selection bias among the subjects, these data strongly suggest that skin problems are common among the elderly and that at present their dermatologic needs are largely unmet.

A woman complained of severe
itching
and flushing after sexual intercourse or other physical contact with her husband. She developed a weal and flare on intradermal testing with her husband's semen and sweat, pooled donor semen and the sweat from her 2 sons. This is a report of allergy to human semen and the 1st reported case of allergy to human sweat.

Rubber glove intolerance is a common dermatological problem and hypersensitivity of both delayed and immediate types occur. In order to study immediate skin reactions induced by rubber gloves, 15 patients with discomfort and
itch
produced by rubber gloves were examined. The patients were provoked by wearing rubber gloves, scratch tested with gloves, rubber chemicals and powders. RAST-tests were performed using an extract from the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis). In 6/15 patients, contact urticaria was confirmed, in 3 of whom IgE antibodies to latex were demonstrated.

Patients taking immunosuppressive drugs are susceptible to various forms of infection, including dermatologic disease. Recently, atypical manifestations of scabies have been reported in such patients. In the case reported here, a 26-year-old woman who had had a renal transplant and was taking immunosuppressive drugs had a pruritic rash on the back that closely resembled
contact dermatitis
. However, skin scrapings from the involved areas and punch biopsy specimen of the back showed live scabies mites. The
pruritus
was relieved and the skin lesions disappeared within ten days of treatment with scabicides. We believe that current widespread use of immunosuppressive agents may result in more cases of atypical forms of scabies. Therefore, physicians who deal with immunosuppressed patients should be aware of this possibility.

Contact dermatitis
form Hippomane mancinella L. (manchineel) is commonly observed in Caribbean and Central American Coast land. Its sap from leaf exudate and from the fruit induce severe dermatitis that may involve oral, ocular, genital mucous membranes and skin, depending on the mediate or direct type of contact. Intense
itching
or burning sensation occurs within an hour and is followed by painful erythema, vesicles, bullae or pustulae, the latter being highly suggestive of mancheneel. Oropharyngeal and ocular lesions may by very severe. The brief delay and the burnlike appearance of the lesions suggest an orthoergic mechanism due to a caustic that could be similar to the substance identified in an other species of Euphorbiacae as phorbol esters. Traditional and native remedies are presented herein.

A series of 955 persons aged 24-44 years, with atopic dermatitis in childhood, were interviewed in order to identify factors which increase the risk of developing hand eczema in adult life, or aggravate already existing hand eczema. Endogenous (constitutional) factors were in general of greater importance than exogenous factors, viz. chemicals, water, soil and wear (friction). Eczematous involvement of the hands in childhood was of predominant importance. In individuals without such involvement, severe (widespread) dermatitis in childhood was a dominant factor. Other factors, each of them significantly more important than the exogenous ones, were persistent eczema on other parts of the body and dry/
itchy skin
. The factors female sex, family history of atopic dermatitis and simultaneous bronchial asthma/allergic rhinitis were associated with increased risk of developing hand eczema in adult life, but were of limited importance compared with the other endogenous and the exogenous factors.

Naphthol AS is a coupling agent of cotton dyeing. 2 elderly women with hyperpigmentation of the neck and limbs are described. Both felt
itching
on the neck, forearms, and lower extremities and noted hyperpigmentation a month later. Both had worn cotton flannel nightdresses in winter. Patch testing with cotton flannel and methanol extracts were positive, but after estraction with methanol, the residual flannel did not react. The methanol extracts of cotton flannel, were analysed. The patients were tested with 5 extracted components; Naphthol AS was found to be the causative agent.

We experienced 15 patients with generalized rash, mostly appearing a day or two after breaking a clinical thermometer or during dental treatment. Similar skin manifestations were revealed, suggestive at first glance of mercury exanthem, i.e. diffuse symmetrical erythema predominantly on major fluxural areas. An inverted triangular or V-shaped erythema on both upper antero-medial thighs was a common feature. Severe cases had miliary pustules and/or purpura on erythematous skin.
Pruritus
or burning sensation was relatively mild. Pyrexia or malaise was a complaint of more than half the patients. Most of the patients had a previous history of
contact dermatitis
to Mercurochrome, and by patch-testing were found to have contact allergy to several mercurials, especially inorganic ones. Until recently, Mercurochrome had been most widely used as a topical disinfectant in Japan. This seems to be a possible cause of the high incidence of contact allergy to mercurials in this country. From our findings we feel that our patients had developed systemic
contact dermatitis
due to inhalation of mercury vapor.
