Toxicosis was induced in pregnant Holstein-Friesian heifers by giving polybrominated biphenyls a in gelatin capsules at the rate of 25 g/day. Initially, this dosage was approximately 67 mg/kg of body weight. Clinical signs were anorexia, excessive lacrimation and salivation, diarrhea, emaciation, dehydration, depression, and abortion. Fever was not evident during the experiment. Values for serum glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase,
lactic dehydrogenase
, blood urea nitrogen, and bilirubin were increased. Changes in packed cell volume, hemoglobin content, total erythrocyte and leukocyte counts, and differential leukocyte counts were minimal and reflected dehydration and secondary infection. proteinuria
. Gross necropsy findings included dehydration; subcutaneous emphysema and hemorrhage; atrophy of the thymus; fetal death with concomitant necrosis of cotyledons; kidneys that were enlarged, pale tan to gray; thickened wall of the gallbladder; inspissated bile; edema of abomasal folds; mucoid enteritis; linear hemorrhage and edema of the rectal mucosa; and secondary pneumonia. Microscopic changes were most marked in the kidneys, gallbladder, and eyelid. In the kidney, the principal changes were extreme dilatation of collecting ducts and convoluted tubules, with epithelial degenerative changes of cloudy swelling, hydropic degeneration, and separation from the basement membrane. Common changes in the gallbladder were moderate to marked hyperplasia and cystic dilatation of the mucous glands in the lamina propria. The changes in the eyelids were characterized by hyperkeratosis, with accumulations of keratin in hair follicles of the epidermis and squamous metaplasia with keratin cysts in the tarsal glands. Clinical signs and lesions of toxicosis did not develop in heifers given the polybrominated biphenyls at the rate of 0.25 mg and 250 mg/day for 60 days. Initially these rates were approximately 0.00065 mg/kg and 0.65 mg/kg of body weight, respectively.

The toxicity of a commercial preparation of polybrominated biphenyl was determined in 24 pregnant Holstein heifers that were alloted randomly to one of four experimental groups given 0 (I), .25 (II), 250 (III), and 25,000 (IV) mg per day of fireMaster BP-6 for 60 days or until the animals became moribund. Clinicopathologic determinations were on day -1 prior to dosing, days 15, 30 and 60 during dosing, and following dosing on days 80, 110, 150, and 190 from start of dosing. In addition, samples were collected from moribund heifers of Group IV immediately prior to necropsy. Toxicity was not evident in heifers in Groups I, II, or III. Toxicity was induced in heifers in Group IV. Glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase of serum was increased and calcium decreased as early as day 15 whereas significant increases in
lactate dehydrogenase

In March 1977, a large volume of the industrial chemical hexachlorocyclopentadiene (HCCPD) was dumped into a municipal sewage system in Kentucky. We evaluated the health effects of exposure to HCCPD in 145 sewage treatment plant workers. We found that 85 (59%) had noted eye irritation, 65 (45%) had headaches, and 39 (27%) had throat irritation. Symptoms occurred throughout the plant; however, highest attack rates occurred in primary sewage treatment areas. Medical examination of 41 employees three days after the plant was closed showed

levels; these findings were not present three weeks later. This episode demonstrates the toxicity of HCCPD and emphasizes the vulnerability of sewage workers to chemical toxins in wastewater systems.

Spontaneous renal artery embolism is not rare, but a correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment are often delayed. Clinical features and follow-up of 17 cases are reported. Cardiac disease or arrhythmias pre-existed in 16 patients. Initial symptoms included flank pain (seven cases), abdominal or chest pain alone (seven), and nausea and vomiting (eight). Fever (greater than or equal to 37.5 degree C) occurred in 10 cases and flank tenderness in only eight. Laboratory findings included leukocytosis,

lactic dehydrogenase
, serum glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase, serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase, and alkaline phosphatase. Serum creatinine level exceeded 1.3 mg/dl in 88% and 4.0 mg/dl in 65%; four patients required dialysis. The diagnosis, made by scintiscan, arteriography, or both was often delayed. Renal embolization was bilateral in seven patients and unilateral in 10, with serum creatinine level above 4.0 mg/dl in five of the latter. Emboli to other organs caused early death; cardiovascular disease led to later death. With anticoagulants, renal function returned in patients surviving more than 1 month, even those with bilateral emboli. Thus, renal embolism is recognizable if the disease is considered, and a favorable outcome is common with long-term anticoagulants.

Enzymuria and specific
proteinuria
were examined over a period of 19 days in 4 groups of 5 rats: a control group, a nondiabetic polyuric group, a group of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats treated with insulin as of the 10th day after the injection of the drug, and a similar group of untreated diabetic rats. Increased urinary excretion of beta-N-acetyl-D-glucosaminidase,
lactate dehydrogenase
, and alanine aminopeptidase was observed shortly after the induction of diabetes. It was partly or totally reversible following insulin treatment. Nondiabetic polyuria had a slight effect on the excretion of alanine aminopeptidase only. The urinary excretion of beta 2-microglobulin also rapidly increased after the onset of diabetes to a level approximately 50 times the control values. This effect was largely reversible with insulin treatment and was absent in the nondiabetic polyuric group. A small but significant 3-fold increase in albumin excretion was also noted but was not affected by insulin treatment. We conclude that streptozotocin-induced diabetes causes an early tubular dysfunction that is unrelated to polyuria and is reversible upon insulin treatment. This tubular dysfunction is best revealed by the urinary excretion of the low molecular weight protein beta 2-microglobulin. Our results suggest that it would be of interest to further examine the usefulness of sensitive markers of tubular dysfunction, especially low molecular weight
proteinuria
, in the detection of early stages of diabetic nephropathy.

Oak poisoning occurred in crossbred cattle due to eating immature tender oak (Quercus incana) leaves. Mortality was 70%. The animals exhibited anorexia, severe constipation and brisket edema. The feces were hard, pelleted and coated with blood and mucous. Significant reductions in blood hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and significant elevations in serum bilirubin were observed. Serum urea nitrogen and creatinine were greatly increased. The relationship between
proteinuria
and glomerular polyanion (GPA) charge has been studied in a model of experimental cadmium (Cd) nephropathy. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were administered Cd in drinking water for up to 18 months. From month 2, the animals showed an elevation of albuminuria preceding by about 6 months the rise of urinary beta 2-microglobulin and IgG. The nephrotoxic action of Cd was not readily detectable on the basis of the urinary output of beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase, alanine aminopeptidase and
lactate dehydrogenase
. These enzymes showed either little variation or were affected late in the intoxication process. Administration of Cd for 12 or 18 months did not impair the GFR. The glomerular origin of the albuminuria induced by Cd was demonstrated by estimating the glomerular filtration of rat or human (injected intravenously) albumin in rats whose tubular reabsorption had been blocked by a saturating dose of cytochrome C. The GPA charge was assessed by measuring the binding of the cationic dye, Alcian blue (AB), to membranes of isolated glomeruli. The sialic and sulfate content of these membranes was also determined. The Cd induced-albuminuria was negatively correlated (r = -0.73; n = 37) with the AB binding to glomerular membranes, their sialic acid content (r = -0.39) but not with their sulfate content (r = -0.15). A negative correlation (r = -0.62; n = 37) was also observed between the albuminuria and red blood cell membrane negative charges largely contributed by sialic acid. All these observations can be interpreted as the evidence that Cd enhances the glomerular filtration of proteins through a GPA depletion involving mainly sialic acid.

The subacute toxicity of benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) was investigated in male rats given oral doses of 0, 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight/day for 4 weeks. Body weight gain and food consumption were decreased with increasing doses of BITC. Haematological changes of toxicological relevance were observed in the highest dose group. BITC administration resulted in increased serum cholesterol level in all treatment groups and decreased serum triglycerides level at 200 mg/kg. Renal dysfunction was indicated by reduced urine volume,

and enhanced urinary
lactate dehydrogenase
activity. BITC exposure also affected the weights of various organs and caused histological changes in the ductus choledochus, liver, ileum and mesenteric lymph nodes.

The clinical studies about the electrolyte abnormality (EA) in patients with malignant lymphoma (ML) are rarely reported. We analyzed the EA and renal insufficiency in 123 patients with ML between June. 1976 and Jan. 1989; 8 patients with Hodgkin's disease, and 115 patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Before treatment, the incidence of the EA was 24.2% and hypercalcemia, hypocalcemia, and hyperkalemia were predominant. After treatment it became to 74.7% and the number of hyponatremia and hypokalemia increased. The incidence of
proteinuria
and renal insufficiency (serum creatinine above 1.5 mg/dl), were 7.3% and 2.4% before treatment, and became to 26.8% and 26.8% after treatment, respectively. There was a significant difference between two groups with and without the EA before treatment as for serum
lactate dehydrogenase

LDH
) levels (p less than 0.01), clinical stages (p less than 0.05) and the incidence of bone marrow involvement (p less than 0.01). In 34 autopsied cases, 3 cases showed massive renal involvement and about a half of cases showed various renal changes. The EA before treatment was caused by extrarenal factors, because the incidence of

and renal insufficiency were almost same to healthy controls. And renal factors play an important role on the E.A after treatment. Above results suggest that the EA before treatment indicates the progress of malignant lymphoma and the EA after treatment means not only the progress of the disease but also therapy-related renal damages.
