With its chronic administration in a dose of 100 mg/kg lithium
carbonate
inhibited shaking of the head induced in mice with 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP). This effect did not differ from the action following a single injection of lithium, when the interval between injection of lithium and of 5-HTP was one hour. With the interval lengthened to 24 hours the frequency of shaking diminished only under the effect of chronic administration. At the 5th, 10th and 21st day of a daily administration lithium failed to produce any effect on the hypothermal action of a reserpine-like agent Po 4-1284, but would reduce the protective action of imipramine in a
ptosis
test. A single injection of lithium made against the background of a chronic injection of water produced an opposite effect, viz. it significantly reduced the protective action of imipramine in hypothermia, but did not affect it with reference to
ptosis
. Hence, chronic administration of lithium leads to potentiation in its action of the serotonin-negative and central adreno-negative componets and to extenuating the peripheral adreno-negative component.

We report a case of uterine lithiasis in a 73-year-old Latin American woman. The patient underwent vaginal hysterectomy and colporrhaphy for complaints related to secondary uterine
prolapse
and cystocele. The 70-g, 8 x 5 x 3.5 cm uterus had a normal shape. Ten white, starlike, 0.5 x 0.5 x 0.2 cm, calcified structures were found within the endometrial cavity. Chemical analysis of one of these by x-ray diffraction showed it to be composed of calcite, one of the crystalline forms of calcium
carbonate
. To our knowledge, this is the first report of human uterine lithiasis in the literature.

Kearns-Sayre syndrome (KSS) is a multisystem mitochondrial disorder characterized by the invariant triad: onset before 20, progressive external ophthalmoplegia and pigmentary retinal degeneration, plus at least one of the following: complete (or not) heart block, cereberal dysfunction and CSF protein above 100 mg/dl. Autopsies from patients with KSS revealed widespread tissue distribution mtDNA deletions. These deletions result in significantly lower activities of the enzymes of the respiratory chain. The same deletion of mitochondrial DNA present in skeletal muscle is found in myocardial tissue. An 18-year-old girl diagnosed with the KSS was admitted to our hospital because of an upper respiratory tract infection and dysphagia. ECG showed cardiac conduction defects. The patient had no history of syncope. At her surface ECG there was a complete RBBB (QRS duration approximately 130 ms), a clockwise rotation with an axis of approximately 90 degrees and a slight QT prolongation (420 ms). Echocardiography showed
prolapse
with thickening and degeneration of both mitral valve leaflets but without mitral regurgitation. The patient was started on a diet rich in potassium and pharmaceutical therapy with magnesium oxide (240 mg of elemental Mg p.o. per day), 1 g of calcium
carbonate
t.i.d., vitamin D (calcitriol 0.25 microg p.o. per day) and coenzyme Q(10) 100 mg daily and discharged 6 days later with slightly improved biochemical profile but apparent clinical improvement. Urgent pacemaker implantation was decided but unfortunately the patient died due to acute cardiac arrest 10 days later.

Degradable heart valves based on in situ tissue regeneration have been proposed as potentially durable and non-thrombogenic prosthetic alternatives. We evaluated the acute in vivo function, microstructure, mechanics, and thromboresistance of a stentless biodegradable tissue-engineered heart valve (TEHV) in the tricuspid position. Biomimetic stentless tricuspid valves were fabricated with poly(
carbonate
urethane)urea (PCUU) by double-component deposition (DCD) processing to mimic native valve mechanics and geometry. Five swine then underwent 24-h TEHV implantation in the tricuspid position. Echocardiography demonstrated good leaflet motion and no
prolapse
and trace to mild regurgitation in all but one animal. Histology revealed patches of proteinaceous deposits with no cellular uptake. SEM demonstrated retained scaffold microarchitecture with proteinaceous deposits but no platelet aggregation or thrombosis. Explanted PCUU leaflet thickness and mechanical anisotropy were comparable with native tricuspid leaflets. Bioinspired, elastomeric, stentless TEHVs fabricated by DCD were readily implantable and demonstrated good acute function in the tricuspid position.
