There are 3 methods of preventing births in young hiefers: enucleation of the corpus luteum after several months of gestation, injection of follicular hormones or of oxytocic agents soon after the unwanted mating. Enucleation of the corpus luteum is tedious, and impossible in some breeds such as charolais, in whom the corpus luteum i s too dificult to locate. Various single or multiple doses of natural or synthetic hormones have been injected with the intention of allowing new follicular development. Complications like vaginal ptosis, relaxation of the ischio-caudal ligaments, fetal retention and sterility are common; moreover, the injections frequently fail to terminate the pregnancy. The author's preferred method is to inject 100,000 IU (10 mg) of folliculine im, then 36-48 hours later, 10 ml of an oxytocic agent into each uterine horn. This is done by catheterizing the cervix with a metal sound 4 mm in diameter and 55 cm long. The oxytocic solutions may be quaternary ammonium salts, oxyquinoline, Lugol solution, or a commercial preparation like Plastilugol. The highest termination rates were obtained at 5-10 days of gestation.
