Monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) was similarly active in the hypothalamus of 60-day-old male and female Charles River rats. A single, 2 mg/kg IP injection of deprenyl, however, resulted in a significantly greater inhibition of hypothalamic MAO-B in normal males than in normal females. Repeated administration of estrogen (estradiol valerate) to intact males postnatally, a treatment which disrupts the
masculinization
process, although not provoking true "feminization," decreased the inhibition of MAO-B, thus abolishing the sex-specific difference. The intensity of deprenyl-provoked hypothermia and
ptosis
in males exceeded that of females; neonatal and postnatal estrogenization of males resulted in diminution of these effects. Androgen administration to neonate females did little affect the biochemical and in vivo parameters of MAO inhibition. It is concluded that sex-specific, biochemical differences in MAO-B inhibition may have pharmacological correlates, and both facets of MAO inhibition are sensitive to neonatal exposure to estrogen.

Both hypergonadotropic hypogonadism and myasthenia gravis can be parts of type II autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome and association between the two disorders has been reported in few cases. A 14 year old male patient with a personal history of bilateral cryptorchidism and
ptosis
was referred for delayed puberty. Clinical examination revealed eunuchoid habitus, small, soft testes, gynecomastia,
ptosis
, a myasthenic deficit score of 22.5 points and an IQ of 84 points. Decreased testosterone (0.064 ng/mL) and elevated LH (64.5 mUI/mL) were consistent with hypergonadotropic hypogonadism and karyotype was normal: 46,XY. Thyroid function, haematologic evaluation, BUN, electrolytes, and glycemia were in the normal range. Therapy consisted of anticholinesterase inhibitors, immunosuppressants, corticotherapy, testosterone; thoracoscopic thymectomy was performed showing thymic lymphoid hyperplasia on histopathologic examination. Myasthenic score improved (12.5 points), progressive
virilization
occurred, and a year later the patient presented with cushingoid features and obesity.

Esthetic
masculinization
of the chest wall is one of the first surgical steps in female-to-male transsexual (FTMTS) reassignment. This surgical procedure is not a simple mastectomy: it is required for removal of breast tissue with glandular resection and skin excess revision, to reduce and replace the nipple-areola complex in the right location, minimizing chest wall scars. The creation of an esthetically pleasing male chest allows the patient to live at ease in the male gender role.In this article, we present our series of 68 FTMTSs who underwent bilateral mastectomies for surgical sexual reassignment (a total of 136 mastectomies) according to our algorithm, in the period between January 2010 and December 2017. We selected 4 different operative procedures, classified as subcutaneous ("pull-through" and "concentric circular" techniques) and skin extended ("ultrathin vertical bipedicle" and free nipple graft). We achieved a total complication rate of 6.6%, less than that reported in the literature; additional procedures for esthetic improvements were performed in 14.7% of cases. The mean patient satisfaction was approximately 4.57% of a maximal value of 5 (excellent). To help surgeons in choosing the most appropriate FTMTS surgical technique and to reduce unfavorable results, we propose the use of our treatment algorithm in preoperative evaluation of the chest wall according to the breast volume, degree of glandular
ptosis
, and skin elasticity.
