Cartilaginous tumors arising from the skull or intracranial structures are infrequently seen. There have been 112 such cases reported. They are most commonly found in the middle fossa and the parasellar region. They arise from cartilaginous rests in the base of the skull, particularly around the basal synchondroses. Occasional cases of intracranial growths also show lesions in peripheral bones. The authors have encountered a case in which chondroma was a manifestation of generalized chondromatosis. The patient was a 25-year-old male, who complained of diplopia in May 1975. He noted ptosis in his left eyelid which gradually progressed over a 2 months period to complete ptosis. When he was admitted in July 1975 to Nagoya National Hospital, the neurologic signs revealed a palsy of the IIIrd cranial nerve on the left side. The patient has been suffering from generalized enchondromatosis during a period of 20 years. Roentgenograms revealed extensive areas of bone destruction and pathological calcification of the phalanx, ribs, hip bone, femur, tibia, ulna and radius. Roentgenograms of the skull revealed calcification on the left middle fossa. After a left carotid angiography, an osteoplastic craniotomy was performed on August 5, 1975. The tumor was located in the extradural space of the middle cranial fossa. After incision of the capsule, gelatinous semisolid tissue was removed piecemeal. Its total removal proved to be impossible. Histological examination of this tumor revealed enchondroma.

We reviewed the clinical records of 38 patients with benign neoplasms or tumors of the larynx that were examined in the Department of Otolaryngology, Kurume University Hospital during the 10-year period from 1971 to 1980. There were 24 patients with papilloma, 4 amyloid tumor, 2 hemangioma, 2 chondroma, 1 neurofibroma, 1 pleomorphic adenoma, 1 eosinophilic granuloma, 2 non-specific swelling of the ventricular fold, and 1 so-called prolapse of the ventricle. Some of these conditions, such as chondroma, neurofibroma, pleomorphic adenoma and eosinophilic granuloma, are vary rare.

A 9-year-old boy was referred for increasing ptosis in the left eye. CT and MRI revealed a well-circumscribed mass in the superonasal orbit. An anterior orbitotomy was performed and the mass was excised in toto. Pathologic evaluation revealed a pure chondroma. Chondroma is an uncommon tumor that may rarely present as an orbital mass.

Intracranial chondroma is a rare benign tumor. Here, we present the case of a 29-year-old female who was afflicted with left eye blindness and ptosis. Brain computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed the presence of a giant calcified mass accompanied by a solid mass in the middle and posterior fossa. A differential diagnosis regarding chordoma, chondrosarcoma, and other chondroid tumors based on radiologic information was inconclusive. The lesion was resected completely under a microscope using a combined pterional and subtemporal approach. The pathologic report confirmed the diagnosis of chondroma. No evidence of neurological worsening was observed. The tumor had a calcified mass with mature hyaline cartilage surrounded by a thick fibrous capsule. We dissected the periphery of the tumor mass and removed it via aspiration. It was readily distinguished from normal brain parenchymal tissue. The large calcified mass at the center of the tumor had relatively high vascularity, and a high-speed drill and various rongeurs were used to remove the tumor.
