In vivo and in vitro studies were conducted to determine the contribution of the bovine uterus to concentrations of 15-keto-13,14-dihydro-prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGFM) in peripheral plasma of postpartum cows. In Experiment 1, cows were assigned to three groups: untreated control (n = 4), hysterectomy following a manually induced
prolapse
of the uterus (n = 5) and sham operation (n = 3:
prolapse
of the uterus and replacement). Surgery was performed within 8 h of parturition, and blood samples collected frequently on the day of surgery and once (0800 h) or twice (0800 and 1700 h) daily from Day 1 to Day 15 postpartum. Following hysterectomy, PGFM concentrations decreased precipitously, became essentially undetectable by 5 h, and remained so for the rest of the experimental period. In contrast (P less than 0.01), PGFM concentrations, which remained elevated during the day of surgery in the sham-operated group, peaked on Day 2 (sham-operated group: 1339 pg/ml) or Day 3 (untreated control: 2143 pg/ml), and declined to a basal concentration between Days 10 to 15. In Experiment 2, in vitro metabolism of tritiated arachidonic acid ([3H] AA: 10 microCi) and production of PGF2 alpha and PGFM were studied in explants of early postpartum intrauterine tissues (myometrium,
caruncle
and intercaruncular endometrium). Extracts of [3H] AA metabolites released into the incubation medium were separated on Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. Metabolites of [3H] AA, having the same chromatographic mobility as PGF2 alpha, PGFM and PGE2, were detected.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

This is a report on the treatment of urethral neoplasms in a series of 331 with ages ranging from 21 to 88 years. The most common symptoms of manifestation of the lesion include: bleeding, burning and stinging during urination, eventually pain associated with movements. In forty-one patients the polyps are removed operatively through excision, in 185-through electrocoagulation, and in eighteen-excision with ensuing electrocoagulation Eighty-seven patient are subjected to conservative treatment because of the presence of urethral mucosa
prolapse
. The histological findings show evidence of polyps of the urethra in 206 cases, and urethral
caruncle
in thirty-six. The obtained results are estimated as good. Mass screening examinations of women are recommended.

In a 72-year-old woman with micturition problems, in whom a genital
prolapse
had been diagnosed earlier, a urethral
caruncle
was diagnosed, i.e. a
prolapse
of the dorsal mucosa of the urethra.

Urethral disease in women and girls often is overlooked. As the urine may seem to be normal as determined by repeated urinalysis, the symptoms-urinary frequency and burning-may be attributed entirely to other pelvic disease or to functional disorder. Since erroneous diagnosis may lead to unnecessary procedures or to neglect of treatment with consequent development of severe disease in the kidneys or ureters, it is important to consider urethral lesions as a possible cause in any case of abdominal discomfort in women. The most common lesions of the urethra in women are urethritis, stricture,
caruncle
, inflammatory polyps and cysts,
prolapse
of the urethra, and diverticulum. In some cases diagnosis can be made simply on the basis of inspection and palpation. In others more extensive diagnostic procedures must be carried out in order that treatment may be definitive. The methods of treatment, varying with the nature of the lesion, are outlined herein.

Currently, there is a lack of comprehensive data regarding clinicopathologic characteristics and surgical treatment of divided nevus of the eyelids. Here clinicopathologic features and reconstructive procedures performed on 73 patients were described. We showed that the lesion was randomly located on both eyes with a predominant incidence in females. Affected regions included the following: eyelid only (n = 40, 54.8%); medial canthus involvement (n = 4, 5.5%); medial canthus,
caruncle
, and bulbar conjunctiva involvement (n = 5, 6.8%); lateral canthus involvement (n = 18, 24.7%); full eyelids (n = 6, 8.2%); and cheek extension (n = 9, 12.3%). Lesions presented as a pigmented macule (n = 18, 24.7%) or mass (n = 55, 75.3%).
Ptosis
was present in 26 (35.6%) cases leading to visual field defects (n = 9, 12.3%). The puncta were covered in 13 (17.8%) cases. Overall, surgical results were satisfactory. Pathologically, lesions were either intradermal (n = 40, 54.8%), junctional (n = 15, 20.5%), or compound (n = 18, 24.7%). Because of the lack of systemic data regarding the rare entity of divided nevus of the eyelids, this study improves our understanding of this lesion, and it should be treated with individualized reconstructive procedures. Incorporation of pediatric patient population in the future will further extend our knowledge in dealing with this disorder.

This article reviews the normal anatomy of the female urethra, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging techniques, and the role of MR imaging in the evaluation of diverse urethral and periurethral diseases. Salient MR imaging findings of common and uncommon cystic urethral lesions (urethral diverticulum, Skene cyst, and vaginal cysts), and masses (urethral carcinoma, leiomyoma, melanoma, fibroepithelial polyp,
caruncle
, and mucosal
prolapse
) are presented. The evolving role of dynamic MR in the evaluation of stress urinary incontinence is reviewed.
