Inflammatory cloacogenic polyp
(
ICP
) is a rare lesion arising in the region of the anorectal transitional zone. It is likely caused by occult internal
prolapse
. Most cases reported in the literature are in the adult population. This is a report of
ICP
in four children. Awareness of this entity in children is important because of both the propensity for recurrence or persistence of the polyps if the underlying etiology is not corrected, as well as the long-term implications of internal intussusception:
procidentia
, descending perineum syndrome, and ultimately, incontinence.

A 15-year-old boy with Marshall-Smith syndrome presented with increased frequency and urgency of stooling, hematochezia, and rectal pain. A polypoid mass was found at the anorectal junction and excised. Microscopically, the lesion was covered by both squamous and columnar mucosa. It was villiform in configuration with focal ulceration and strands of smooth muscle in the lamina propria. These features are characteristic of an inflammatory cloacogenic polyp, a lesion not previously reported in the pediatric age group.
Inflammatory cloacogenic polyp
is related to solitary rectal ulcer syndrome and is most likely due to
prolapse
of the anorectal transition zone. Although rare in this age group, solitary rectal ulcer and its variants should be considered in the differential diagnosis of anorectal and rectal lesions in the pediatric patient.

Inflammatory cloacogenic polyp
is a rare condition arising from the transitional zone of the anorectal junction. It is benign but may macroscopically resemble anorectal malignancy.
Inflammatory cloacogenic polyp
was diagnosed in two patients with rectal bleeding and polypoid growths at the anorectal junction. The lesions were best visualized with an endoscope retroflexed in the rectum. Accurate diagnosis was dependent on histological examination. The histological similarities to solitary rectal ulcer syndrome and other mucosal
prolapse
conditions are discussed, and the literature on inflammatory cloacogenic polyp and its management reviewed.

Inflammatory cloacogenic polyp
(
ICP
) is regarded as part of the spectrum of pathological changes encountered in mucosal
prolapse
syndrome (MPS)/solitary rectal ulcer. We present the clinicopathological features of two females with squamous cell carcinoma in situ arising in their ICPs. Human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 was demonstrated in the areas of squamous carcinoma in situ in both polyps by polymerase chain reaction. These cases highlight the need for close scrutiny of the squamous components of these lesions.
