The intervertebral disks and adjacent vertebral bodies of the 2nd to 7th cervical vertebrae from 17 horses (3 months to 19 years of age) were examined grossly and by light microscopy. In each specimen, the disk tissue was fibrocartilagenous centrally and became more fibrous peripherally, but without a distinct demarcation between the nucleus pulposus and anulus fibrosus. Demarcation between the anulus fibrosus and the dorsal longitudinal ligament was not apparent. With increasing age of the horses, cellularity of the central fibrocartilagenous portion of the disk decreased. The caudal end plates of the vertebrae had an increase in width and bone density with increasing age. In specimens from horses of all ages, the cranial end plate of the vertebrae had only a thin rim of dense bone. The cranial physis of each vertebral body was closed at 3 years of age, whereas the caudal physis of vertebral bodies was discontinuous in 6- to 9-year-old horses and was completely absent in horses greater than or equal to 12 years. Disruption of fibers of the anulus fibrosus by small amounts of fibro-cartilage was observed in disks from 5 horses. This change was similar to a Hansen type II disk prolapse.

In the correction of lagophthalmos due to leprosy neuritis temporalis muscle transfer (TMT) is used to provide a motor to assist in lid closure. This study of TMT in 51 eyes was carried out to assess the effectiveness of TMT in achieving lid closure and corneal protection. The average lid gap preoperatively on light closure was 7.3 mm which was reduced to 3.2 mm on final follow-up. The average lid gap pre-operatively on tight closure was 5.3 mm which was reduced to 0.4 mm at final follow-up. It is possible to train patients with partial or total anesthesia of the cornea in a visual THINK-BLINK reflex. The common complications encountered were ectropion in 6 eyes (12%) and ptosis in 3 eyes (6%).

To describe eyelid changes in ocular leprosy, 74 patients (148 eyes or 296 eyelids) were examined, focusing on eyelid abnormalities. The adnexal examination included evaluation of the upper eyelid crease pattern, qualitative assessment of the orbicularis oculi muscle function, measurement of the distance between the corneal reflex and the upper eyelid margin (margin reflex distance), and slit-lamp biomicroscopy of the eyelashes and tarsal conjunctiva. Eyelash ptosis was a common finding associated with a multiple upper eyelid crease pattern and trichiasis. In the past, eyelash ptosis has probably been diagnosed as upper eyelid entropion or trichiasis, but in this series entropion was not observed. The distinction between eyelash ptosis, trichiasis, and upper eyelid entropion is important because the surgical management for each is different. Other true leprotic abnormalities of the eyelids are lagophthalmos and lower lid ectropion.

The aim of the publication is to assess the effectiveness of the treatment of type I disc extrusion according to Hansen by using the method of hemilaminectomy without fenestration. The evaluated clinical material comprised 36 chondrodystrophic dogs in which 38 surgical procedures were performed. All dogs were administered corticosteroid during the operation. Dachshunds made up to 79% of patients. In 34 cases grainy mass was extracted from the vertebral canal. In two cases it was plaster-like mass and in other two--granulo-chondral. Most often (12 cases) the prolapse of the nucleus pulposus was observed between the first and second lumbar vertebra. There was one case of the postoperative pyogenic infection of the wound. Recovery was observed in all dogs with 3rd grade clinical signs, 17 out of 18 dogs with 4th grade and 8 out of 13 dogs with 5th grade of dysfunction severity. The recovery time of the dog depended in the statistically significant way on the severity of symptoms and the grade of the present disease (p<0.00005). There did not appear to be any statistically significat relationship between the recovery time and the duration of symptoms pre operatively (p=0.42), the time of non-ambulatory status (p=0.27) and the breed of the dog (p=0.81).

No reports exist on consequences of in vitro production (IVP) of embryos for the postnatal development of the calf or on postparturient function of the dam of the calf. Three hypotheses were evaluated: calves born as a result of transfer of an IVP embryo have reduced neonatal survival and altered postnatal growth, fertility, and milk yield compared with artificial insemination (AI) calves; cows giving birth to IVP calves have lower milk yield and fertility and higher incidence of postparturient disease than cows giving birth to AI calves; and the medium used for IVP affects the incidence of developmental abnormalities. In the first experiment, calves were produced by AI using conventional semen or by embryo transfer (ET) using a fresh or vitrified embryo produced in vitro with X-sorted semen. Gestation length was longer for cows receiving a vitrified embryo than for cows receiving a fresh embryo or AI. The percentage of dams experiencing calving difficulty was higher for ET than AI. We observed a tendency for incidence of retained placenta to be higher for ET than AI but found no significant effect of treatment on incidence of prolapse or metritis, pregnancy rate at first service, services per conception, or any measured characteristic of milk production in the subsequent lactation. Among Holstein heifers produced by AI or ET, treatment had no effect on birth weight but the variance tended to be greater in the ET groups. More Holstein heifer calves tended to be born dead, died, or were euthanized within the first 20d of life for the ET groups than for AI. Similarly, the proportion of Holstein heifer calves that either died or were culled for poor health after 20d of age was greater for the ET groups than for AI. We observed no effect of ET compared with AI on age at first service or on the percentage of heifers pregnant at first service, calf growth, or milk yield or composition in the first 120d in milk of the first lactation. In a second experiment, embryos were produced using 1 of 2 culture media: synthetic oviductal fluid-bovine embryo 1 (SOF-BE1) or Block-Bonilla-Hansen 7 (BBH7). We detected no difference between cows receiving an SOF-BE1 or BBH7 embryo in gestation length, the percentage of cows in which parturition was induced, or the percentage of cows that experienced calving difficulty, retained placenta, prolapse, or metritis. Among Holstein heifers, birth weight was higher for BBH7 calves than for SOF-BE1 calves. Treatment had no significant effect on calf death. Results indicate that calves born as a result of IVP-ET are more likely to experience alterations in birth weight and increased death in early life but that there were few consequences to the dam of carrying a fetus derived by IVP-ET.

Facial paralysis resulting from leprosy has a serious impact on the entire face especially in the areas innervated by the facial nerves. In particular, lagophthalmos in patients with leprosy causes exposure keratitis, corneal, and conjunctival dryness, which can progress to blindness and disfigurement. Recently, we conducted 4 different temporalis muscle transfer (TMT) methods over the last 4 years to reduce ptosis. The methods used included Brown-McDowell, McCord-Codner, modified Gillies-Anderson, and modified Gillies. Seventy-five TMT operations in 60 patients were performed between 2011 and 2014. The mean age was 70.1. Fifteen patients had bilateral TMT procedures. As a result, ptosis appeared in 14(18.7%) of 75 TMT procedures for 4 years. To prevent or correct this complication, the following 4 technical refinements have simplified the surgery and yield better surgical outcomes. First, an increase in the length of the temporalis muscle flap to approximately 8 cm with a parallel course to the lateral canthus will reduce oblique pull. Second, the width of the fascia sling in the upper eyelid is narrowed (3-4 mm) to reduce weight on the eyelid. Third, the fascia sling in the upper lid should not be located along the full length of the upper lid but terminate 3.5 cm medial to lateral canthal tendon and in other words, should not be tied at the medial canthal tendon to reduce tension and weight. Lastly, the fascia sling in the eyelid should be located shallow (probably in subdermal layer) and as near as possible to the lid margin to prevent any functional disturbance in levator aponeurosis.
