A survey over recent international developments to detect the irradiation treatment of foods is given, in particular the programmes of "ADMIT" (FAO/IAEA) and of BCR (European Community). The need to detect radiation treatment by analysing the food itself is desirable to check compliance with existing regulations, such as the enforcement of labelling and control of prohibition, to enhance consumer confidence in the correct application of radiation processing, and to protect consumers' freedom of choice between irradiated or unirradiated food products. Some larger collaborative studies on an international scale have already taken place, e.g. ESR measurements of bones from chicken, pork, beef, frog legs and fish, thermoluminescence of insoluble minerals isolated from herbs and spices, gas chromatographic analysis of hydrocarbons and alkylcyclobutanones derived from the lipid fraction of chicken and the microbiological DEFT/APC procedure for spices. These methods could soon be implemented in international standard protocols.

We have used a new method of genomic microarray to investigate amplification of oncogenes throughout the genome of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Array-based comparative genomic hybridization (array CGH) allows for simultaneous examination of 58 oncogenes/amplicons that are commonly amplified in various human cancers. Amplification of multiple oncogenes in human cancers can be rapidly determined in a single experiment. Tumor DNA and normal control DNA were labeled by nick translation with green- and red-tagged nucleotides, respectively. Instead of hybridizing to normal metaphase chromosomes in conventional comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), the probes of the mixed fluorescent labeled DNA were applied to genomic array templates comprised of P1, PAC, and BAC clones of 58 target oncogenes. The baseline for measuring deviations was established by performing a series of independent array CGH using test and reference DNA made from normal individuals. In the present study, we examined fourteen GBMs (seven cell lines and seven tumours) with CGH and array CGH to reveal the particular oncogenes associated with this cancer. High-level amplifications were identified on the oncogenes/amplicons CDK4, GLI, MYCN, MYC, MDM2, and PDGFRA. The highest frequencies of gains were detected on PIK3CA (64.3%), EGFR (57.1%), CSE1L (57.1%), NRAS (50%), MYCN (42.9%), FGR (35.7%), ESR (35.7%), PGY1 (35.7%), and D17S167 (35.7%). These genes are suggested to be involved in the GBM tumorigenesis.

This study aimed to estimate the pretreatment serum levels of SVE-Cadherin, glycosaminoglycams (GAGs) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in order to evaluate their prognostic significance and their role in monitoring tumor response and overall-survival in Non Hodgkin lymphoma (DLCL) patients. Also the work aimed to investigate the relationship between levels of these biochemical markers with LDH level, ESR and tumor stage. For this purpose pretreatment serum levels of these biochemical markers were evaluated in 40 newly diagnosed patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (Diffuse large cell type) and studied in relation to expression in healthy control. Our results revealed that serum levels of SVE-Cadherin, GAGs and MDA increased significantly (P<0.05) in NHL patients (DLCL) as compared to control, no significant relation between these parameters and ESR, LDH. However, higher level of SVE-Cadherin was found in stage II, III of the disease as compared to stage IV disease but with no statistical significance. Regarding response to therapy, only MDA showed a significant relation with response of the patient to treatment. Concerning overall survival there is no statistical significance was found between these parameters & OS in NHL patients. Elevated levels of SVE-Cadherin, GAGs and MDA in NHL patients indicate that they may have a role in the pathogenesis of the disease. High level of MDA may be used as a predictor for tumor response to systemic chemotherapy. Low level of SVE-Cadherin in stage IV participates in the invasiveness and metastasis of the disease.

The chelating behavior of ligands based on carbohydrazone core modified with pyridine end towards Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions have been examined. The ligands derived from the condensation of carbohydrazide with 2-acetylpyridine (H(2)APC) and 4-acetylpyridine (H(2)APEC). The (1)H NMR, IR data and the binding energy calculations of H(2)APC revealed the presence of two stereoisomers syn and anti in the solid state and in the solution. The (1)H NMR, IR data and the binding energy calculations confirmed the presence of H(2)APEC in one keto form only in the solid state and in the solution. The spectroscopic data confirmed that H(2)APC behaves as a monobasic pentadentate in Co(II) and Cu(II) complexes and as mononegative tetradentate in Ni(II) complex. On the other hand, H(2)APEC acts as a mononegative tridentate in Co(II) complex, neutral tridentate in Ni(II) complex and neutral bidentate in Cu(II) complex. The electronic spectra and the magnetic measurements of complexes as well as the ESR of the copper complexes suggested the octahedral geometry. The bond length and bond angles were evaluated by DFT method using material studio program. The thermal behavior and the kinetic parameters of degradation were determined using Coats-Redfern and Horowitz-Metzger methods. The antioxidant (DDPH and ABTS methods), anti-hemolytic and in vitro Ehrlich ascites of the compounds have been screened.
