The Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI; Beck, A.T., Epstein, N., Brown, G., Steer, R.A., 1988. An inventory for measuring clinical anxiety: psychometric properties. J. Consult. Clin. Psychol. 56, 893-897) is intended to assess clinical anxiety symptoms that are distinct from depressed mood, and there is some preliminary empirical support for this differential assessment. The BAI may serve a useful complementary role when used with the popular Beck Depression Inventory (BDI; Beck, A.T., Rush, A.J., Shaw, B.F., Emery, G., 1979. Cognitive Therapy of Depression: A Treatment Manual. Guilford Press, New York, NY; Beck, A.T., Ward, C.H., Mendelson, M., Mock, J., Erbaugh, J., 1961. An inventory for measuring depression. Arch. Gen. Psychiatry 4, 561-571), in patients with mood and/or anxiety disorders. Accordingly, the present paper reports the results of the first confirmatory factor analysis of the Beck scales in a homogeneous, clinically depressed sample (137 outpatients with non-psychotic major depressive disorder). Results indicated that a multidimensional model of separate anxiety and depression factors had good fit to the data. However, the parameter estimate was very high (0.784) and a unidimensional, single-factor model of negative affectivity approached the criteria for good fit. It was concluded that the Beck Anxiety and Depression Inventories assess distinct anxiety and depression phenomena to a limited extent when used in a clinically depressed sample.

The relationship among therapeutic alliance, psychotherapy outcomes, and interpersonal problems was examined. The present study hypothesized therapeutic alliance would mediate the relationship between interpersonal functioning and outcome among patients with multiple sclerosis entering psychotherapy for depression. Nineteen clients received 16 weeks of individual cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for depression as described by D. C. Mohr, A. C. Boudewyn, D. E. Goodkin, A. Bostrom, and L. Epstein (2001). Participants completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI; Beck, Ward, Mendelson, Mock, & Erbaugh, 1961), the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems-Circumplex (IIP-C; Alden, Wiggins, & Pincus, 1990), and the Working Alliance Inventory-Client Form (WAI-C; Horvath & Greenberg, 1989). The IIP-C significantly predicted Week 16 BDI and the WAI-C at 4 weeks. When controlling for the WAI-C, the relationship between the IIP-C and BDI was no longer significant, supporting the mediational hypothesis.

We report an elderly patient with diffuse large B cell lymphoma harbouring Epstein-Barr virus that showed spontaneous regressions with subsequent relapses three times. The patient died of aspiration pneumonia without any anti-neoplastic treatment 5 years 10 months after the initial onset of lymph node swelling. In the literature, there are several reports of aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cases that showed spontaneous regressions without relapse till the last observation. Over half of the cases were the extra-nodal type. The tendency toward regression of swollen lymph nodes detected by clinicians occurs within 2 weeks after biopsy. If the remaining lymph nodes show a tendency to decrease in size after biopsy without any anti-tumor therapies, the patient may develop spontaneous regression.
