Trace elements like copper, zinc, iron and
selenium
have a significant influence on the function of the immune system. We studied plasma levels of trace elements in 53 patients with acute bacterial and viral infections. In bacterial infections (septicaemia,
pneumonia
, erysipelas and meningitis) the plasma concentrations of
selenium
, iron and zinc were decreased. Plasma copper was unchanged in patients with erysipelas, but increased in other types of bacterial infections. Although the patients with viral infections showed similar shifts of the trace elements as were observed in patients with bacterial infections, the changes were not as pronounced. A plasma
selenium
value below 0.8 mumol/l was found in only 6% of the patients with viral infections in contrast to 63% of the patients with septicaemia or 57% of the patients with
pneumonia
. Furthermore, in viral infections 60% of the zinc values were below the mean level of 12.8 mumol/l observed in healthy controls as compared with 90% of the values in patients with sepsis or 92% of the values in patients with
pneumonia
. The onset of change in trace elements occurred within a few days and persisted for several weeks. These changes seem to be non-specific and are independent of the agent causing infection. The different types of infections were followed by changes in most of the plasma proteins which are known to be associated with an inflammatory reaction. The changes in plasma proteins were most pronounced in patients with sepsis and
pneumonia
. Patients with sepsis having a high degree of inflammation did not show a positive correlation between the severity of the disease--as judged by plasma proteins--and the alterations of trace elements.

The results of a survey of the major pathological conditions encountered in an established breeding colony of common cotton-eared marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) is presented. 265 home-bred and 70 imported wild-caught marmosets were examined. A Heinz body haemolytic anaemia and skeletal muscle myopathy were the most common pathological findings and were considered to be a result of a complex nutritional deficiency involving vitamin E,
selenium
and protein. Inflammatory disease of the intestinal tract was also a major feature. Chronic colitis was particularly common in older marmosets.
Pneumonia
, otitis media, meningitis and brain abscesses were important pathological findings in home-bred marmosets and were commonly associated with bacterial infections, particularly Bordetella bronchiseptica and Klebsiella species. Trichospirura leptostoma within pancreatic ducts of wild-caught marmosets was the only significant parasitic disease encountered. Mycotic infections of the upper alimentary tract with Candida species were occasional findings in debilitated animals. No pathological features suggesting viral diseases were found.

Selenium
is an essential trace element at lower concentrations and toxic at higher concentration. Animals can metabolize both inorganic and organic forms and convert non methylated Se to mono--or di--or tri--methylated forms, of which, mono-methylated forms are most toxic. Glutathione reductase converts selenoglutathione to H2S in liver and erythrocytes and is ultimately excreted. Se effects the toxicities of xenobiotic agents, provides antagonistic effect to Sulphur and co-administration with Zn increase Se retention in certain organs. At its toxic level (4-8 ppm) it increases Cu contents of heart, liver and kidney and has detoxifying or protecting effect against Cd and Hg. It is a prosthetic group of several seleno metalloenzymes. The concentration of the element is decreased in serum/plasma or erythrocytes of patients of AIDS, trisomy-21, Crohn's and Down's syndrome, phenylketonurea, Keshan's disease and cancer. Rather, the element has antiproliferative and cancer protecting effect. Se content of testes increases considerably during pubertal maturation and, during Se deficiency, the supply to the testes has priority over the other tissues. The element is localized in the mitochondrial capsule protein (MCP) and is involved in biosynthesis of testosterone. Neither the age of mother nor the concentration of Se during pregnancy has any effect on weight of baby or the length of pregnancy. Se levels in human milk is affected by maternal intake and its requirements by infants and young children are higher for their rapid growth. Clinical symptoms of its toxicity include severe irritations of respiratory system, metallic taste in mouth, formication of nose, signs of rhinitis, lung edema and brancho-

Data collected from 365 calves dead from stillbirth/perinatal weak calf syndrome were analysed to determine the predictive value of thyroid gland weight as an indicator of abnormality of the thyroid gland, and to examine the relationships between abnormality of the thyroid gland and other findings in the calves and also the parity of the dam. There was a significant relationship (P < 0.001) between the thyroid gland weight and bodyweight for the calves with a histologically normal thyroid gland, but there was no such relationship for calves with an abnormal thyroid gland. Only 1.1 per cent of the histologically normal thyroid glands weighed more than 30 g, indicating that there is a very high probability that glands weighing more than 30 g are abnormal. However, 76.0 per cent of moderately to severely affected glands weighed less than 30 g. The following significant differences between calves with an abnormal and those with a normal thyroid gland were established. Abnormal thyroid glands were significantly heavier (P < 0.01), constituted a significantly greater percentage of the calf's bodyweight (P < 0.01) and had a significantly lower iodine concentration (P < 0.001). A significantly higher proportion of calves with an abnormal thyroid gland had uninflated lungs (P < 0.01), and a significantly higher proportion had
pneumonia
(P < 0.01). Abnormal thyroid glands were associated with a low
selenium
concentration in the kidneys. There were no associations between abnormalities of the thyroid gland and the parity of the dam, the presence of skeletal fractures, the weight or sex of the calf, infection with leptospira, Salmonella dublin, Bacillus species, Actinomyces pyogenes or Aspergillus species, the quantities of hepatic iron pigment, liver vitamin E concentration or serum cholesterol concentration.

The present study was carried out in order to examine the efficiency of
selenium
/vitamin E on the health status in the first eight weeks of life in Se-deficient neonate calves. The experiments were done with 54 calves from two farms. Animals with low
selenium
level p.n. (< 40 micrograms/l) were randomly classified alternatively to be treated (gr. I) or to serve as control (gr. II). The calves of group I were treated with 0.2 mg
selenium
and 60 mg vitamin E per kg body weight subcutaneously on the first and third day p.n.; they got another treatment with half of the dosage in the fourth week of life. Group II received a placebo (0.9% sterile NaCl-solution). Clinical and haematological examination brought following results: Group I showed a lower infection rate and the duration of infection (especially in the case of
pneumonia
) was shorter than in the controls. During two days, after initial
selenium
substitution, the GSH-Px-activity was clearly higher in the animals of group I. The amount of antibiotics and special diets per calf was lower in group I. In conclusion it can be said, that the application of
selenium
and vitamin E seemed to improve the status of health in the Se-deficient calves, although the results could not be assured statistically.

An intervention study was conducted in 75 young children under one year hospitalized with
pneumonia
or bronchiolitis caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) to evaluate therapeutic effectiveness of
selenium
(Se) supplement on acute respiratory lower tract infection caused by RSV with randomly controlled and double-masked method. Trial subjects were divided into two groups, one with 37 children in routine treatment and the other with 38 children in routine treatment plus Se supplement. The control group derived from 35 normal children during their physical check-up in the out-patient department. Sodium selenite was supplemented orally with 1 mg on the second day of hospitalization. Results showed that days needed for their relief of symptoms and signs were fewer in Se supplement group than that in controls and recovery in indicators of cell immune was better in the former than that in the latter. Levels of Se and glutathione peroxidase in plasma and white cells could be increased by Se supplement. It suggests that Se supplement can promote recovery from RSV infection.
