Pulmonary mucormycosis
is an uncommon, but important, opportunistic fungal
pneumonia
which is often diagnosed post-mortem. This review emphasizes clinical and pathologic characteristics of pulmonary mucormycosis that differentiate this infection from other fungal pneumonias. The most common clinical presentation of pulmonary mucormycosis is a rapidly progressive
pneumonia
with diffuse infiltrates on chest radiographic examination of a patient with an underlying hematologic malignancy treated with immunosuppressive drugs. Other immunocompromised hosts at risk for pulmonary mucormycosis include patients with diabetes mellitus who may develop a distinctive endobronchial form of this disease. Early consideration of this diagnosis, along with aggressive diagnostic evaluation, are critical to effective therapy and patient survival. While treatment with amphotericin B is the mainstay of therapy for pulmonary mucormycosis, diabetics with endobronchial disease may benefit from early, aggressive surgical resection of the involved lung tissue.

Pulmonary mucormycosis
is a recognized entity occurring in diabetics and immunocompromised patients. It has a poor prognosis unless early diagnosis is made and appropriate surgical therapy instituted along with appropriate antifungal therapy. We describe here one of few cases of tracheal involvement by mucormycosis. Extensive destruction of the trachea and bibasal
pneumonia
led to the patient's death.

We report a case of pulmonary mucormycosis in a 65-year-old diabetic patient.
Pulmonary mucormycosis
should be suspected in predisposed patients presenting a
pneumonia
that resists to antibiotics. The microbiologic diagnosis requires usually a biopsy using bronchoscopic or surgical procedures. The optimal therapy requires an early systemic antifungal treatment associated with the resection of the pulmonary lesion and the control of the underlying disease.

Pulmonary mucormycosis
is a relatively uncommon but an important opportunistic fungal infection in immunocompromised patients. It may be acquired by inhalation of spores into the lungs. The pathogenic hallmark of mucormycosis is vascular invasion resulting in thrombosis and tissue infarction/necrosis. The diagnosis can be difficult since presentation does not differ from other forms of
pneumonia
. Risk factors include neutropenia, haematologic malignancies, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, skin burns and deferoxamine therapy in dialysis patients. Early recognition, control of underlying diseases and medical-surgical aggressive management are warranted to better outcomes.
Pulmonary mucormycosis
has a high mortality and medical treatment strategy alone has been associated in several studies to greater mortality. We describe a case of pulmonary mucormicosis with favorable evolution only under medical treatment. We reviewed the bibliography.

Pulmonary mucormycosis
is an uncommon, but important, opportunistic fungal
pneumonia
which is often diagnosed late. Renal failure as the predominant presenting feature is not common in mucormycosis. Moreover, sudden, massive hemoptysis is not a usual complication. In this report we describe fatal pulmonary mucormycosis in a young patient with a previously undiagnosed chronic renal failure.

Pulmonary mucormycosis
is commonly encountered in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis, hematologic malignancies, neutropenia, organ or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and malignancy, but it rarely occurs in high-risk patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We present the case of a 40-year-old SLE female with fulminant
pneumonia
after remission of nephritis treated with rituximab, who developed severe pulmonary mucormycosis that led to her rapid death from acute respiratory failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome.
Pulmonary mucormycosis
has a high mortality rate. However, with early diagnosis and antifungal therapy with lipid formulation-liposomal amphotericin B and surgical removal of the infected area, the outcome can be improved.

Pulmonary mucormycosis
is a rare life-threatening fungal infection associated with high mortality. We present the case of a 61-year-old man with history of chronic lymphocytic leukemia who presented with fever and cough, eventually diagnosed with pulmonary mucormycosis after right lung video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. The patient was successfully treated with amphotericin B and right lung pneumonectomy; however, he later died from left lung
pneumonia
.
