Acute fatal infection with Pseudomonas pseudomallei caused pneumonia, placentitis and endometritis in a pregnant cow. Pneumonia was also present in the foetal lung. Mononuclear cell response with extensive karyorrhexis occurred in maternal and foetal lung and the same cellular pathology, but with diffuse distribution, was responsible for plaques on the endometrium. A more chronic disease with encapsulated caseous lesions in the lung, together with arthritis, occurred in a bull on the same property. Nutritional and physical stress caused by a flood were thought to be predisposing factors. An unusually wet summer with prolonged flooding apparently provided suitable environmental conditions for saprophytic growth of Ps. pseudomallei in an area far south of the region in which infection of animals with this organism commonly occur.

Chlamydia psittaci is a major cause of ovine abortion in the fourth to fifth months of gestation. During the lambing seasons of 1986, 1987, and 1988, fetuses from 52 cases of ovine abortion, stillbirth, or perinatal death were submitted to the laboratory for necropsy examination. Placenta or fetal tissues from 34 cases were cultured on mouse L cells for C. psittaci. Chlamydia psittaci was identified by immunofluorescence on cultures in 20 of these cases. The major gross lesion consistently associated with chlamydial abortion was placentitis with multifocal cotyledonary necrosis and accumulation of red-brown exudate in the intercotyledonary placenta. Chlamydiae appeared as spherical organisms, less than 1 micron in diameter, in the cytoplasm of trophoblasts in impression smears of cotyledons. Histologically, placentitis was sometimes accompanied by pneumonia or encephalitis in the fetus. Chlamydia psittaci was considered the cause for fetal death when chlamydial isolation was associated with placentitis or inflammation of other fetal tissues and when other abortifacient agents were not detected.

Twenty-nine cows from a 240-cow drylot Holstein dairy in north-central New Mexico aborted over a period of approximately 5 months. Nine aborted fetuses were necropsied, and all but 1 of the fetuses were between 5 and 7 months of gestation. Microscopic examination of fetal tissues revealed focal necrotizing encephalitis and nonsuppurative myocarditis in 7 of the 9 fetuses. Additional lesions observed in some fetuses were focal hepatic necrosis, nonsuppurative myositis, focal necrotizing placentitis, focal nonsuppurative pneumonia, and focal nonsuppurative nephritis. A few groups of Neospora caninum-like protozoan organisms were observed adjacent to necrotic foci in the brain of 2 fetuses and in the kidney of a third fetus. No other cause of abortion was detected.

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis was isolated from placenta and abomasal contents of triplet goat kids, two of which were aborted and one of which died shortly after birth. Necropsy findings in the kids were suppurative placentitis and suppurative pneumonia. The public health implications in intrauterine Yersinia infection in goats are discussed.

Aborted fetuses and placental tissue from ewes in 2 flocks were submitted for diagnostic examinations. Brucella ovis was isolated from fetal lung or abomasal contents, or both. Placentitis was a consistent gross lesion. Microscopic lesions included suppurative pneumonia and placentitis.

Of 33 ewes in a flock in Montana, 6 aborted or gave birth to weak lambs, which died within 2 days after birth. Two lambs and a placenta from 1 ewe as well as 1 lamb from another ewe were submitted for diagnosis. Focal necrotizing placentitis, focal pneumonia, focal hepatitis, focal interstitial nephritis, and focal nonsuppurative encephalitis were seen in tissue sections from 2 of the lambs. Toxoplasma gondii was found in smears and sections of the placenta and in sections of lung from 1 lamb. Mice inoculated with tissues from a lamb developed dye test antibodies to T gondii. Eleven of 12 ewes from the same flock had dye test antibody titers of 1:16 or more, and titers were 4-fold higher in aborting ewes than in ewes with normal lambs.

Colonization/infection of the genitals with Mycoplasma, group B Streptococci, and Chlamydia was studied in pregnant women. The course of gestation in women colonized with microorganisms was frequently aggravated by threatened spontaneous abortions, high incidence of hydramnion, late gestoses, pyelonephritis. For the newborns a reduced body mass and increased perinatal morbidity and mortality were characteristic. Transfer of microorganisms to the fetus and newborn was observed in 40-50% of cases and was not always associated with development of a disease. In cases of lethal outcomes of a neonatal disease pneumonia and placentitis were the constant morphological manifestations of the infection. In streptococcal and mycoplasmic infection the inflammation in the placenta was diffuse, involving the decium both in the placenta and in the extraplacental membranes.

Histoplasmosis was diagnosed in nine horses during 1986-1990. The infection with Histoplasma capsulatum caused granulomatous placentitis and abortion in one mare in the 7th month of gestation and three mares in the 10th month. Four newborn foals died from severe granulomatous pneumonia within a few days of birth; and a weanling thoroughbred developed granulomatous pneumonia and lymphadenitis at 5 months of age.

Brucellosis developed in a 14.5-month-old Gelbvieh heifer after the animal was vaccinated with the calfhood dose of strain RB51 Brucella abortus vaccine s.c. during the fourth month of its first pregnancy. The heifer experienced dystocia and was euthanatized during cesarean section because of a large uterine tear. The fetus was dead at delivery. Suppurative placentitis and fetal pneumonia were evident at necropsy. Brucella abortus strain RB51 was isolated from the placenta and the fetus' lung.

A positive score on a modified acid-fast (MAF)-stained smear test of fresh placenta was used to identify a group of bovine abortion submissions believed to be infected with Coxiella burnetii. Immunohistochemical (IHC) testing for Coxiella and Chlamydia antigens was performed on 14 MAF smear-positive cases as well as 29 MAF smear-negative cases received during the study period. Nine MAF smear-positive cases as well as 1 MAF smear-negative case were Coxiella-positive via the IHC test. No placentas were positive for Chlamydia antigen. Various histopathologic features were categorized for all placentas and the presence or absence of selected risk categories was also graded for each case. The results between Coxiella IHC-positive cases and Coxiella IHC-negative/MAF-negative cases were compared using Fisher's exact test (P value at 95% confidence). Significant associations were found between Coxiella IHC-positive cases and the presence of placental inflammation (P = 0.0027), placental necrosis (P = 0.012), fetal pneumonia (P = 0.0152), and the visibility of Coxiella-like organisms within trophoblasts on hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections (P < 0.0001). Histopathologic features of Coxiella IHC-positive placentas included infiltration of the chorionic stroma by mononuclear cells, necrosis of chorionic trophoblasts, and focal exudation of fibrin and neutrophils. The results indicate that MAF smears are a good screening tool for the presence of Coxiella in placentas from bovine abortion cases and that the detection of this pathogen in aborted placentas via traditional staining or IHC methods is usually associated with placentitis.
