In order to shed light on the histological changes occurring in the lungs of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), we scrutinized an open lung biopsy file of 199 patients and selected the patients with RA. The histopathological patterns observed were: pulmonary rheumatoid nodules (4 cases, including one with rheumatoid
pneumoconiosis
); usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) (2 cases); desquamative interstitial pneumonia (2 cases); bronchiolitis obliterans with patchy organizing pneumonia (2 cases); follicular bronchiolitis (1 case); organizing pneumonia always associated with bronchiolitis (3 cases); granulomatous reaction (3 cases); obliterating vasculitis (3 cases); granulomatous vasculitis (1 case);
lymphoid
hyperplasia (2 cases); and localized pulmonary fibrosis (1 case). The clinical data and laboratory findings for the histopathological groups overlapped and did not properly predict the anatomical picture. Both patients with UIP died of lung disease. Otherwise the prognosis in the series was good.

Intratracheal administration to rats of a thin fraction of lunar material delivered by the Luna-16 automatic station from the Sea of Abundance gives rise to
pneumoconiosis
. The disease is characterized by the formation of granulation tissue consisting of
lymphoid
cells, macrophages, fibroblasts and cell cooperations (rosettes), by thickening of the basal layer of the aerohematic barrier, by the development of the immune process, blockade of the terminal parts of the lymphatic network, and by the development of the fibrous process. As regards the intensity of fibrous tissue formation, the lunar material might be attributed to the group of weak-fibrogenous dust as compared, for instance, with quartz.

Four cases of silicate
pneumoconiosis
are described in pigs raised near several chalk quarries and two cement works. The pulmonary changes were characterized by thickened alveolar septa, resulting in distorted airspaces, and small foci of initial fibrosis. In the bronchiolar and alveolar sites, as in the interstitium, free and intracytoplasmic dust was detected. An energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis coupled with a scanning electron microscope revealed that this dust was composed mainly of silicon, calcium, potassium, sulphur, aluminium and iron. In lung-associated lymph nodes, severe
lymphoid
cell depletion and dilatation of peritrabecular and subcapsular sinuses were constant findings. The inorganic material found in the lymph nodes contained the elements listed above. Air samples from the same geographical area revealed particulate pollutants, the qualitative features of which were similar to those found in lung and lymph nodal tissue. It is concluded that domestic animals raised in polluted environmental conditions represent an important biological source from which helpful data may be obtained for assessing risks to human health.

A 63-year-old stoneworker complained of fever and a productive cough. His chest roentgenogram showed a nodular mass and a diffuse interstitial shadow in the right lung. Angiography of the pulmonary artery revealed obstruction of the right upper trunk. Open-lung biopsy was done. Histologic examination showed mixed-dust
pneumoconiosis
with a massive focus of mixed-dust fibrosis with silicotic nodules, and diffuse interstitial fibrosis of pattern with
lymphoid
infiltration. Chemical analysis revealed a high content of aluminum in lymph node, which was thought to be due to inhalation of alumina used for lettering stones. The unilateral interstitial pneumonia was thought to have developed due to deposition of free silica and aluminum dust. Although this patient had been given a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis and the value of rheumatoid factor was high, the interstitial pneumonia was not believed to be associated with the collagen vascular disease.
