Clinical examinations of 226 patients with periodontitis have revealed in 61% of them hyperesthesia of the hard dental tissues, that was mostly generalized, characterized by a marked reaction to thermal, chemical, and tactile stimulants. Study of the mineral metabolism has demonstrated that growing bone tissue loss in dental biopsy specimens and gingival fluid is associated with reducing levels of P, Ca, and Mg. Combination of clinical manifestations of periodontitis and hyperesthesia necessitate search for combined therapy aimed at simultaneous elimination of hyperesthesia and inflammation.

Complete removal of the dental plaque, dental calculus, granulation tissue and necrotic cement from periodontal pockets is of paramount importance for the proper functioning of the regeneration process in the affected periodontium. The purpose of the current study was to obtain preliminary results of the administered vector therapy in patients with chronic periodontitis. Ten patients with 124 multiple-root and 120 single-root teeth were studied; 600 and 480 root surfaces, respectively, were treated. At each appointment we evaluated the oral hygiene of the patient, the presence of plaque-retention zones, bleeding, suppuration, recession, mobility, the probing depth, the quantity and pH of the crevicular liquid, presence of hyperesthesia. After the initial treatment of the root surfaces abrupt improvement of the clinical condition was observed. One month after the therapy there was reduction of the probing depth and the mobility of teeth, less plaque and less bleeding, decreased retention indices, as well as decrease in the crevicular liquid.

Fifteen cats from Italy with Ehrlichia-like inclusion bodies in their neutrophils were studied. They were diagnosed with Anaplasma (Ehrlichia) phagocytophilum infection on the basis of cytological observation of morulae within 1 to 21 per cent of their neutrophils, clinical signs characteristic of ehrlichiosis and their response to doxycycline. The predominant signs of disease were anorexia, lethargy, hyperaesthesia, muscle and joint pain, lameness, neck rigidity, lymphadenomegaly, gingivitis/periodontitis, conjunctivitis, weight loss, incoordination, pale mucous membranes and hyperglobulinaemia. The cat with inclusions in 21 per cent of its neutrophils had suffered arthralgia, tachypnoea, neck rigidity, vomiting and thrombocytopenia for four months, but recovered promptly after treatment with doxycycline.
