Prematurity is of one of the main causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Clinical observations show, that periodontitis in pregnant women can be a direct risk factor for preterm labor, with a greater influence rate compared to other risk factors. The aim of the study was to asses the relationship between periodontal diseases and PLBW in the population of women from the Lower Silesian Region (Poland), and the evaluation of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) levels in gingival cervicular (GCF) and blood serum in women with PLBW and women giving birth on time as well as secretion of these proinflammatory mediators in whole blood after bacterial lipopolysaccharide stimulation. The study group consisted of 84 women with PLBW (39.2% primiparous), aged 17-41 (mean 27.57). The controls were 44 women (47.7% primiparous) aged 16-38 (mean 26.36) who gave birth on time to a normal birthweight baby. PGE2 and IL-1 beta concentrations in serum and GCF were determined by means of immunoenzymatic method (EIA). In the studied population women over 28 years and exposed to medical risk factors had more frequent PLBW occurrence probability. In primiparous over 28 there is 4 times greater probability of preterm labor, and in case of the severe and generalized periodontitis presence there is 3.9 times higher possibility of PLBW compared to women with healthy periodontium. In all women with PLBW there is a significantly higher PGE2 and IL-1 beta concentration in GCF, and in primiparous also PGE2 level in blood serum, compared to controls.

The aim of the study was to review the current literature on the role of vitamin D in dentistry. The term vitamin D is defined as a group of compounds which are cholesterol derivatives with a similar chemical structure. It is produced in the human body and passes through many stages of synthesis. Vitamin D affects our body through the immune, muscular, nervous, and cardiovascular systems. It is also relevant in dentistry and in the carbohydrate metabolism. Nowadays, vitamin D deficiency levels are high in both the Polish and the world population as a whole. This is due to many factors: latitude, diseases and lifestyle. The data shows that over 90% of people of color (black, Latino, Asian, etc.) and nearly 3/4 of whites living in the United States suffer from a shortage of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25(OH) vitamin D). Meanwhile, studies performed in Poland report that a concentration of vitamin D <20 ng/mL (50 nmol/mL) occurs in 70% of the population. Preliminary reports suggest that vitamin D, through the maintenance of normal bone metabolism, as well as its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity, modulates periodontal disease. A normal level of vitamin D is important in the treatment of periodontitis. More and more studies are focusing on the problem of vitamin D deficiency and its role in the human body. It is very important to maintain normal levels of vitamin D in the blood and supplement it in the case of shortfalls.

Endodontic microsurgery is a predictable alternative to nonsurgical treatment of persistent and recurrent apical periodontitis. The modern endodontic microsurgical procedure has been evolving in pace with technological advances. The introduction of modern innovations such as cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) imaging, 3-dimensional (3D) printing technology, and a 3D surgical guide designed with computer-aided software has allowed for a novel approach to the surgical site. The aim of these case reports was to describe root-end surgery with the use of the implant DDS-Pro planning software (Natrodent Polska, Poland), a 3D-printed surgical guide precisely positioned according to the preoperative CBCT scan measurements (CS 8100; Carestream Dental, Atlanta, GA), and a modified soft tissue access. A hollow trephine bur was used to perform the osteotomy, resection of the root, and enucleation of the lesion. The intact cortical plate was salvaged and used as a graft along with plasma-rich fibrin acquired preoperatively from the patient's blood. The positioning guide allowed the clinicians to precisely achieve targeted tissues and shorten the procedure time. Modified soft tissue management helped achieve a small surgical wound for uneventful healing. A less than 12-month CBCT follow-up of both cases showed complete 3D healing of the surgical site.
