Uterine leiomyomata are the most common tumors in women and can cause abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic pain, and infertility. Approximately 200,000 hysterectomies are performed annually in the U.S. to relieve patients of the medical sequelae of these benign neoplasms. Our efforts have focused on cloning the t(12;14)(q14-q15;q23-q24) breakpoint in uterine leiomyoma to further our understanding of the biology of these tumors. Thirty-nine YACs and six cosmids mapping to 12q14-q15 have been mapped by fluorescence in situ hybridization to tumor metaphase chromosomes containing a t(12;14). One YAC spanned the translocation breakpoint and was mapped to tumor metaphases from a pulmonary chondroid hamartoma containing a t(12;14)(q14-q15;q23-q24) and a lipoma containing a t(12;15)(q15;q24); this YAC also spanned the breakpoint in these two tumors, suggesting that the same gene on chromosome 12 may be involved in the pathobiology of these distinct benign neoplasms.

Retroperitoneal lipomas are rare tumors. The etiology of their proliferation is uncertain. Metabolic and genetic causes have been reported. We present the case of a 12-year-old patient with a large pelvic lipoma causing dysuria and pelvic pain. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed the existence of a large retroperitoneal fat tumor. Ultrasound-guided fine needle biopsy was performed to exclude malignancy. The biopsy specimen revealed tissue consistent with a benign lipoma tumor. Exploratory laparotomy revealed a solid lipoma of the retroperitoneal space 8 x 6 cm and weighing 300 g. The patient had a good postoperative performance status. Lipomas should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a solid tumor in the retroperitoneal space.

Pure uterine lipoma is a very rare benign mesenchymal neoplasm, and only a few cases have been reported in the literature. This is in contrast to leiomyoma, which is not only the most common neoplasm of the uterus but also one of the most common tumours in women, estimated to occur in 20-40% of women beyond the age of 30 years (AFIP) and more frequently affect postmenopausal women. We report the case of a 70-year-old woman who presented with pelvic pain and postmenopausal uterine bleeding. Pure uterine lipoma was diagnosed preoperatively by CT scan with and without contrast and confirmed postoperatively by pathological examination. Clinical and histological diagnosis of pure uterine lipoma with immunohistochemical findings are described, and the efficacy of CT in diagnosing this tumour is discussed.

Lipomas of the gastrointestinal tract are uncommon benign tumors of mature adipocytes and may occur in any portion along the gut. Depending on location they may have a variety of clinical presentations and even simulate malignant neoplasms. We report a case of a 58-year-old woman who presented with acute pelvic pain. An emergency sonogram detected a hyperechogenic mass in the left adnexal region, with no vascularization on Doppler. A computed tomography confirmed the hypothesis of a fat containing tumor with signals of torsion. The patient underwent laparoscopy which depicted a mass over the antimesenteric side of the sigmoid with signs of ischemia and twisted vascular pedicle. The lesion was resected, and the microscopy confirmed the diagnosis of lipoma. The multidisciplinary team in the emergency room must be aware of these possible complications in order to optimize patient care.
