Seven related Bernese Mountain Dogs developed a syndrome Characterized by progressive cerebellar and hepatic disease. Clinically, stiffness in the hind limbs, mild incoordination, and a slight head tremor were first noticeable when pups were 4 to 6 weeks old. The condition progressed, causing pups to assume a wide-based stance. Other signs included head bobbing, spontaneous nystagmus, and, finally,
paresis
. Hematologic findings included leukocytosis with a left shift; normocytic, normochromic anemia;
hypoproteinemia
, low serum creatinine, and urea nitrogen concentrations; excessive fasting plasma ammonia concentration; and an increase in concentration of serum bile acids. Portal venography performed on 1 dog revealed a small liver and extensive extrahepatic varicosities. Necropsy revealed cerebellar hypoplasia, nodular liver, extensive abdominal varicosities, and ascites. Histologically, degeneration and depletion of Purkinje's cells and vacuolation, degeneration, and nodular regeneration of hepatic tissues were evident. Preliminary analysis of the pedigree was suggestive of an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance.

A 47-year-old man lost his consciousness and brought to our hospital by ambulance. On admission, he had aphasia and upper right limb
paresis
. Diffusion weighted MR image of the brain on admission showed multiple high intensity areas in the left middle cerebral artery (MCA) territory. Brain angiography performed on the 2nd hospital day revealed the left MCA severe stenosis. We started intravenous antithrombotic therapy on the 1st day. The left carotid angiography on 12th day demonstrated that the left MCA stenosis was improved. He had medical history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and gout. But he had only slight atherosclerosis, and had no arrhythmia and patent foramen ovale. Blood chemistry test showed marked
hypoproteinemia
and hyperlipidemia, and urine examination showed proteinuria. He was diagnosed as nephrotic syndrome for the first time. Nephrotic syndrome brought hypercoagulability, so we suspected that nephrotic syndrome concerned with brain infarction.

A 3-year-old male, hybrid mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos) was presented with a 2-year history of progressive, ascending
paresis
and paralysis. On presentation, the bird was in sternal recumbency and displayed intermittent focal seizures and intention tremors. Proprioceptive deficits and absent withdrawal reflexes were observed in both pelvic limbs, wing extension was limited, and reflexes were diminished bilaterally. Other findings included emaciation and dehydration. Results of a complete blood count and plasma biochemical analysis revealed anemia,
hypoproteinemia
, hypoglycemia, and hyperuricemia. Radiographs were unremarkable and results of an Aspergillus antibody were weakly positive. The duck went into cardiopulmonary arrest and died approximately 1 hour after initiating treatment with intravenous crystalloid fluids. A postmortem diagnosis of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL) was made based on the presence of neuronal granular cytoplasmic material that was autofluorescent and stained with periodic acid-Schiff and Luxol fast blue. To our knowledge, this is only the second case report of NCL in an avian species and the first in waterfowl.
