Partial cystectomy was performed for myogenic decompensated bladder with excessive residual urine in 11 patients, in whom training instructions and pharmacological treatment were unsuccessful. Postoperatively, the patients were followed for 2-13 years (median 4 years). Both symptoms and residual urine were reduced permanently. Urodynamic testing had demonstrated underactive detrusor function in all. The supposed etiology was infravesical obstruction in 4, overdistension due to sensory bladder
paresis
in 3 and unknown in 4. Histological examination of the resected bladders showed focal degeneration of the smooth muscle cells (detrusor myopathy) in 7, transmural edema and vast deposits of collagen in 8, mastocytosis in 3 and eosinophilic
cystitis
in 1. In conclusion we regard partial cystectomy an alternative to clean intermittent self-catheterization in selected patients with excessive residual urine.

The objective of the present work was to study the structure of voice disorders in children depending on the methods chosen to diagnose dysphonia. Medical histories of 1,451 children at the age varying from 2 months to 16 years were analysed. All of them were patients hospitalized for the first time between 1997 and 2007 to treat hoarseness caused by vocal cord nodules, functional or mutational dysphonia, chronic laryngitis, vocal cord
paresis
/palsy, recurring respiratory papillomatosis, vocal cord
cystitis
, and cicatrical laryngeal stenosis. It was shown that vocal cord nodules and functional dysphonia diagnosed in 53.1% and 12.2% of the children were the main causes of voice disturbances. The former condition was especially common in boys aged from 7 to 12 years engaged in intense sports activities while the latter prevailed in 5 to 12 year-old girls studying singing. It is concluded that measures are needed to increase awareness of both parents and teachers of psycho-emotionally labile children about causes of hoarseness and methods of its diagnosis. The use of the fibrolaryngoscopic technique makes it possible to elucidate the cause of dysphonia in children of any age starting from the first days of postnatal life.

We report a 57-year-old woman who presented with low back pain, fever and impairment of consciousness. The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit in Glasgow 8, with neck stiffness, peritoneal irritation, leukocytosis, hyperglycemia requiring insulin and a urine test suspecting an infection. Brain CT was unremarkable, while CT of the abdomen and pelvis evidenced emphysematous
cystitis
, retropneumoperitoneum and pneumorrhachis. Blood, urine and cerebrospinal fluid cultures were positive to Escherichia coli. She was treated with ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin and amikacin during one month followed by ciprofloxacin until completing 100 days. The air in the spinal canal and bladder decreased. However she suffered several infectious complications such as multiple paravertebral, epidural and psoas abscesses, L5-S1 spondylitis and a L3 fracture. As an inflammatory complication she developed a bulbar infarction and tetraparesis. She had a good clinical response with medical treatment, partial improvement of the
paresis
and reduction of epidural abscesses.

Herpes zoster (HZ) infection occurs in approximately 10% to 30% of individuals. Visceral neuropathies secondary to HZ can cause
cystitis
and urinary retention. But colonic pseudo-obstruction can also occur. Peripheral neuropathy may reveal segmental motor
paresis
of either upper or lower limbs, the abdominal muscles or the diaphragm. We report the case of a 62-year-old male patient who presented with abdominal distention and cutaneous vesicular eruption on the left side of the abdominal wall. Plain X-rays and computed tomography scan showed distended small bowel. A diagnosis of intestinal pseudo-obstruction was made secondary to segmental
paresis
of the small intestine and visceral neuropathy. Conservative management was successful and the patient was discharged uneventfully. Intestinal pseudo-obstruction ought to be considered when dealing with non-obstructive (adynamic) conditions of the digestive tract associated with HZ infection; since early recognition may help to avoid unnecessary surgery.
