Tachyzoites of 2 isolates of Neospora caninum (NC-1 and NC-2) were inoculated subcutaneously (s.c.), intraperitoneally (i.p.), or orally into mice to compare the effects of route of inoculation on pathogenicity. Mice developed more severe disease, and disease occurred sooner when inoculated with the NC-1 isolate compared to the NC-2 isolate. Deaths occurred earlier in mice inoculated i.p. with either isolate. Mice inoculated orally or s.c. with tachyzoites responded similarly to infection. Tissue cysts of the NC-2 isolate produced infections in mice following oral or s.c. inoculation. Lesions seen in mice inoculated with tachyzoites or bradyzoites were primarily acute pneumonia, myositis, encephalitis, ganglioradiculoneuritis, and
pancreatitis
. In vitro studies demonstrated that tachyzoites of both isolates were killed by incubation in
pepsin
-HCl solution but not 1% trypsin solution. Bradyzoites of the NC-2 isolate were able to withstand treatment with
pepsin
-HCl solution.

The expression of the gastrointestinal cancer associated antigen CA 19-9, defined by the monoclonal antibody 1116 NS 19-9, was studied by immunoperoxidase staining in routine formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections from normal pancreata, pancreata with
pancreatitis
and from benign and malignant pancreatic neoplasms. The formalin-fixed specimens were treated with
pepsin
, which enhanced the staining intensity. Eighty-five per cent of well to moderately differentiated adenocarcinomas were positive. The staining was most intense in the apical border of cells lining the lumina of malignant glands, and in mucus inside the lumina, but cytoplasmic staining was also seen. In poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas the number of positive cells was smaller and in anaplastic carcinomas only occasional cells were stained. All mucinous cystadenomas and cystadenocarcinomas stained intensely, whereas serous cystadenomas, and all benign and malignant islet cell tumours were negative. Ducts in chronic pancreatitis and in normal pancreata were positive in 96% and 79%, respectively, but the staining was focal and usually weaker than in carcinomas. In acute pancreatitis (92% positive) the staining was more intense, and the CA 19-9 expression was seen predominantly in small terminal ducts and in centroacinar cells. There was an apparent correlation between the degree of differentiation of the ductal adenocarcinomas and the expression of CA 19-9, whereas the correlation between tissue expression and serum levels of CA 19-9 was poor.

To determine clinical and epidemiological features of scorpion stings in two departments of Colombia, a descriptive study was performed in the hospitals of 10 towns from Antioquia (2 256 071 inhabitants) and five from Tolima (630 424 inhabitants). One hundred and twenty-nine cases were admitted during one year, 51 in Antioquia, 78 in Tolima and 41 were children less than 15 years old. Most stings (70.5%) occurred inside the house; 27.9% were on the hands and 26.4% on the feet. The scorpion species involved were Tityus pachyurus (51), Centruroides gracilis (31), T. fuehrmanni (29), T. asthenes (7) and Chactas spp. (1). In 10 cases the scorpion involved was not identified. Systemic envenoming signs (e.g. vomiting, tachypnea) were significantly more frequent in children than in adults (P < 0.05). Four children had hypertension, but none developed pulmonary oedema. One 3-year-old girl, stung by T. asthenes, had acute oedematous
pancreatitis
. Ninety-eight patients had mild envenoming. Moderate (27 patients) and severe (four patients) envenoming was significantly more frequent in children than in adults (P = 0.003; relative risk = 2.97). A
pepsin
-digested anti-Centruroides spp. antivenom was administered to 19 of 31 patients presenting systemic envenoming signs. No adverse reactions to antivenom were observed.
