Systemic candidiasis was induced in broiler chickens 14 days old by intravenous injection of a suspension of viable Candida albicans cells. Injection resulted in decreased body weight, moderate mortality, swollen and reddened livers and kidneys, pancreatitis, and disturbances of the nervous system. Three types of neutral disturbances were observed: 1) extreme opisthotonus with spasmodic tremors; 2) extreme torticollis with cranial rotation of 270 degrees: and 3) extreme torticolis which resulted in the head being drawn in a medial-ventral direction. None to 50% of the inoculated birds exhibited these neural disturbances, depending on the isolant of C. albicans used. Microbiological examination of internal organs and blood revealed that C. albicans localized in the meninges of the brain. There was also a significant isolant-related effect of C. albicans on the growth rate of the inoculated birds. These easily quantitated differential effects of various isolants of C. albicans offer the prospect of correlating biochemical characteristics with virulence and obtaining information about the mechanism of pathogenicity of this microorganism.

The infection with paramyxovirus type 3 (PMV-3) of parakeets can lead to severe illness in small psittacines (Neophema spp. and other parakeets) as well as in passerines (finches). The disease is characterized by acute or chronical pancreatitis and central nervous symptoms, such as torticollis as well as walking in circles and by high mortality rates in the affected flocks. As there is no licensed vaccine for psittacines available to prevent this disease. The aim of the following study was to find a suitable vaccine formulation for parakeets with inactivated PMV-3 and a well-tolerated and effective adjuvant. Seven adjuvants have been examined in ovo and in vivo regarding their efficacy and side effects. In these investigations, the classical Freund's complete Adjuvant (FCA) and Freund's incomplete Adjuvant (FICA) and Alhydrogel, but also the more recent developments TiterMax Gold, Specol, Gerbu Adjuvant 100, and Diluvac Forte have been used. Regarding its efficacy and side effects, the vaccine formulation "PMV-3/Specol" has been evaluated positively and can be recommended for the production of a PMV-3 vaccine for parakeets.

The pathological and immunohistochemical findings of avian encephalomyelitis (AE) were described in various tissues of naturally infected pigeons of a flock from a outbreak in Turkey. Clinically, paresis, paralysis, circling movement and torticollis of the head associated with nervous signs were marked symptoms among the diseased pigeons. At necropsy, small or large white-greyish foci were detected in the pancreas, and erosive-ulcerative foci along with petechial hemorrhages in ingluves. Histopathologically, lesions in central nervous system, particularly in the cerebellum molecular layer, consisted of non-suppurative encephalomyelitis. Lesions in the pancreas revealed non-suppurative pancreatitis along with acinar degeneration and necrosis and/or lymphoid aggregations. Immunohistochemical staining of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues was performed using a direct-fluorescein antibody technique with chicken anti-AE virus serum fluorescein isothiocyanate conjugate. Viral antigen was strongly stained in cytoplasm of epithelial cells of the exocrine glands, and neurons of the cerebral hemispheres and midbrain. In addition, viral antigen was also marked in the kidneys and tissues of the digestive system. Consequently, this article is, to our knowledge, the first report of natural AE in pigeons.
