Forty-eight patients received radiation therapy to the pelvis for locally recurrent carcinoma of the recto-sigmoid. The average duration before the development of local recurrence in the pelvis after curative surgery was 18 months. Thirty-seven patients had undergone a previous adbominoperineal resection. Twenty-five patients had Dukes' Stage-C carcinoma. Twenty-one patients had Stage-B and only two patients had Stage-A carcinoma of the rectosigmoid according to the Dukes' classification. All patients received radiation therapy to the pelvis to an average total dose of 5,000 rads in 25 to 28 fractions over a period of five to five and one half weeks. Twenty-three patients also received simultaneous weekly 5 F.U. by a single I.V. bolus of 1000mg to potentiate the action of radiation therapy. The treatments were well tolerated. The major complication was diarrhea, which responded satisfactorily to antidiarrheals such as
Lomotil
or Immodium tablets. Eighty per cent of the patients had
pain
relief. The median survival was 18 months for the patients receiving radiation therapy alone, but the patients treated with both radiation therapy and 5 F.U. had an average survival of 21 months and better palliation of symptoms.

The clinical and experimental results of Jianpiling for treating diarrhea due to Spleen deficiency were reported in this paper. 268 cases in the treatment group were treated with Jianpiling, 8 tablets three times daily for a consecutive period of 40-60 days. The curative rate and the total effective rate were 63.4% and 98.5% respectively. 75 cases in the control group were treated with SASP or
Diphenoxylatum
Co., the curative rate and the total effective rate being 38.7% and 94.7% respectively. The difference of the curative rate between the two groups was statistically significant (P less than 0.001). The excretory rate of D-xylose demonstrated that Jianpiling could increase the resorptive function of small intestine. The experiment on isolated small intestine of rabbits showed that Jianpiling could strikingly inhibit the peristalsis of isolated jejunum and ileum. The effect of relieving spasm of the intestine and alleviating
pain
was taken by antagonising the exictative function of M-receptor for acetylcholine and directly inhibiting the intestinal smooth muscle.

A group of 71 women between 11-20 weeks of gestation who desired termination of pregnancy and had no contraindications for prostaglandin (PG) administration were given complete physical and gynecological examinations; hemoglobin was estimated and urinalysis was done. They were then given orally 2 tablets of
Lomotil
(diphenoxylate HCl 2.5 mg + atropine sulphate 0.025 mg) and 1 tablet of Stemetil (Prochlorperazine 5 mg). They were then given 15 (S) 15 methyl PGF2alpha intravenously at the dose level of 1 mcg/min. 61 subjects (85.9%) aborted within 30 hours. At regular intervals pulse rate, blood pressure, uterine
pain
, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, temperature, and respiratory rate were measured and any other side effects were recorded. The mean induction abortion interval was 15.65 hours, the mean number of episodes of vomiting and diarrhea was 0.9 and 0.6 respectively. This study compared well with the intramuscular route of administration with a higher rate of complete abortions and lower rate of side effects. The latter is explained on the basis of smaller amounts of the drug being infused at a slower rate. Disadvantages include confinement to bed, discomfort, and need of constant supervision. Compared with intraamniotic and extraamniotic case studies, the latter are invasive procedures while the intravenous method is not. Also, the intravenous route allows for adjusted drug dosage and stopping the procedure in the event of an undesirable reaction.
