Estrogen may also modulate neurogenic inflammation by interaction with other substances and cells that participate in the pathogenesis of neurogenic inflammation, including substance P, bradykinin, and mast cells. Collectively, these observations indicate that estrogen has the capacity to influence the onset and course of neurogenic inflammation of the bladder.

Pseudoangiomatous stromal hyperplasia (PASH) is a relatively uncommon histologic finding in breast specimens. The clinicopathologic spectrum of this disease entity can range from a focal nonsignificant microscopic finding to a dominant palpable breast mass. To confirm the diagnosis, a biopsy is required primarily to distinguish PASH from a low-grade angiosarcoma. The mammographic description of PASH is a round or ovoid, circumscribed or partially circumscribed mass. The sonographic feature is a hypoechoic mass. Nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesized in peripheral organs plays a critical role in the development and maintenance of the nervous system and also participates in processing nociceptive stimuli. Previous studies suggest that reproductive hormones may regulate the expression of NGF. Ovariectomies were performed on female mice, and mice were killed 24 h after hormone replacement to evaluate the effects of estrogen and progesterone on NGF in peripheral organs, specifically the uterus, bladder, heart, and salivary gland. Sham-operated intact mice and untreated ovariectomized mice served as controls. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated the presence of NGF,

-beta, and progesterone receptors in these organs. Ovariectomy caused a significant decrease in NGF protein content in the uterus, and short term treatment of ovariectomized mice with estrogen and/or progesterone increased uterine NGF mRNA and restored NGF protein to concentrations similar to intact control mice. Ovariectomy did not affect NGF protein concentrations in the salivary gland, but treatment of ovariectomized mice with estrogen alone or in conjunction with progesterone stimulated concentrations of NGF protein that exceeded those observed in intact control or ovariectomized, untreated mice. NGF mRNA was increased in salivary glands from ovariectomized mice treated with progesterone alone or in combination with estrogen relative to other groups. NGF protein content of the hearts of ovariectomized mice treated with estrogen alone or in conjunction with progesterone was increased relative to intact controls and ovariectomized, untreated mice, but neither ovariectomy or hormone replacement affected NGF mRNA content in the heart. NGF protein content of the bladder was unaffected by ovariectomy or hormone treatment, and bladder NGF mRNA was unaffected by ovariectomy or hormone treatment. Collectively, these results indicate that reproductive hormones have the capacity to regulate NGF message and protein in a manner that varies among organs. Osteoporosis is a silent disease that affects 10 million Americans; 80% of those affected are women. Although the disease is more common in postmenopausal Caucasian women, all ages and races are at risk. Osteoporosis can be a debilitating disease that can cause

Because symptoms generally do not occur until after the disease has progressed, clinicians should include osteoporosis screening and preventative education as part of the regular gynecologic care. Diagnosis is typically made by a dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan. Treatment consists of dietary and lifestyle changes, along with pharmacologic intervention. Although hormone therapy has been shown to be effective in preventing osteoporosis, the risks of long-term treatment with HRT are discussed. Human inflammatory breast carcinoma (IBC) is the most malignant type of breast cancer with an extremely poor prognosis. The dog is the unique animal species in which spontaneous inflammatory mammary carcinoma (IC) has been reported, although it is not well documented. The purpose of this study was to characterize histopathologically and immunohistochemically the canine IC, considering associated clinical features. Twenty-one dogs diagnosed with IC and with known clinical and necropsy data were included in the study. Tissue samples from necropsies underwent a histopathological review and an immunohistochemical study (Ki-67,

The histological study revealed several types of carcinomas (solid, tubular, papillary, and adenosquamous) and three lipid-rich carcinomas. All tumors were ER negative. Two histological patterns of neoplastic dermal infiltration were observed: tubular/papillary and sarcomatous-like. Dermal sarcomatous-like infiltration was significantly related to previous treatments with progestagens (p = 0.006), primary type of IC (p = 0.03), extreme local

processing. Although this modulation occurs within the CNS, estrogen may also act on primary afferent neurons whose cell bodies are located within the dorsal root ganglia (DRG). Primary cultures of rat DRG neurons were loaded with Fura-2 and tested for ATP-induced changes in intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca(2+)](i)) by fluorescent ratio imaging. ATP, an algesic agent, induces [Ca(2+)](i) changes via activation of purinergic 2X (P2X) type receptors and voltage-gated Ca(2+) channels (VGCC). ATP (10 microM) caused increased [Ca(2+)](i) transients (226.6+/-16.7 nM, n = 42) in 53% of small to medium DRG neurons. A 5-min incubation with 17 beta-estradiol (100 nM) inhibited ATP-induced [Ca(2+)](i) (164+/-14.6 nM, P<0.05) in 85% of the ATP-responsive DRG neurons, whereas the inactive isomer 17 alpha-estradiol had no effect. Traditionally conceptualized as 'female hormones', oestrogens appear to have significant effects in the male biological system. Favorable effects have been noted on bone, brain and cardiovascular physiology while a potential role in the prostate pathology of the aging male has been seriously suspected. Oestrogens in male are predominantly the products of peripheral aromatization of testicular and adrenal androgens. While the testicular and adrenal production of androgens declines with aging, levels of total plasma oestradiol do not decline. This is to be ascribed to the common increase in fat mass with aging (the substrate of peripheral aromatization) and an increased aromatase activity with aging. But free or bioavailable oestrogens may decline due to an increase in sex hormone binding globulin. Oestrogens produce significant beneficial effects on skeletal growth and bone maturation. In old age oestrogens are better predictors of bone fractures than androgens. Oestrogens exert effects on the brain: on cognitive function, co-ordination of movement,

and affective state, and are maybe protective of Alzheimer's disease. Oestrogen effects on the cardiovascular system include those on lipid profiles, fat distribution, endocrine/paracrine factors produced by the vascular wall (such as endothelins, nitric oxide), blood platelets, inflammatory factors and coagulation. Pure sebaceous neoplasms arising in dermoid cysts of the ovary are exceedingly rare. A 63-year-old female with abdominal swelling and

underwent a right salpingo-oophorectomy that showed a unilocular cyst weighing 830 g and measuring 15x12x10 cm, filled with sebaceous material containing a few hair shafts. The cyst wall exhibited plaques protruding into the cavity of the cyst. Microscopy revealed a dermoid cyst with nests and lobules of atypical and infiltrating sebaceous cells surrounded by basaloid cells. The tumor cells stained diffusely for high-molecular-weight cytokeratins and focally for cytokeratin 7, cytokeratin 19, epithelial membrane antigen and carcinoembryonic antigen in the immunohistochemistry study. Some histogenetic concepts relevant to this case are discussed along with a brief review of this neoplasm.
