The authors report a case of cavernous
hemangioma
in the occipital region, which resembled sinus pericranii, protruded in the recumbent posture. A 28-year-old male was admitted with a chief complaint of an occipital fluctuating mass, 5cm in diameter, accompanied by slight
pain
. The skull X-P was normal. A direct puncture revealed that the lesion was a blood cyst. A cystogram by percutaneous needle puncture revealed paramedian blood pooling with some draining veins but did not show any transcranial communicating vessels. A T2 weighted MR image demonstrated a well demarcated high intensity lesion just beneath the corium. The subtotally removed specimen turned out to be a cavernous
hemangioma
. We discerned a conceptual confusion of pseudosinus pericranii with scalp cavernous
hemangioma
, based on the literature review. And we propose that scalp cavernous
hemangioma
, even if it changes its size according to posture, should not be simply designated as sinus pericranii.

Contact ulcer granuloma has a multifactorial etiology but vocal abuse is considered the most important etiological factor. Some other possible factors are well-known: tuberculosis, allergies, hormonal or autonomic imbalance, psychosomatic influences, reflux-esophagitis, pathological conditions of the nose, nasal accessory sinus, tonsils. Constitutional factors play also an important role. The symptoms range from mild huskiness to severe hoarseness with
pain
extending to the ear, dysphagia, sometimes hemoptysis and chronic cough. Failure to recognize the pathological features of this frequently overlooked lesion leads to diagnosis of larynx cancer, angiosarcoma or
hemangioma
. Indication for microsurgical removal is only severe dyspnea by size of mass or if the dignity is not clear, because any surgical procedure has only temporary value and does not eliminate the etiological factors. The dignity can normally be proved by stroboscope. Vocal rehabilitation and re-education are an essential appropriate means of treatment for this disease if other causative factors are excluded.

Cavernous hemangiomas are the most common benign tumors of the liver. Twenty-four patients who had hepatic resections for giant symptomatic hepatic hemangiomas during a six year period at a single institute were retrospectively reviewed to analyze indications for surgical treatment and evaluate operative mortality and morbidity. There were 18 women and six men varying in age from 41 to 69 years with an average age of 52.5 years. Moderate to severe
pain
, discomfort, feeling of fullness, bloating and sensation of an abdominal mass were the most commonly reported symptoms. Ten patients had moderate anemia and two had severe anemia. Tumors were visualized by ultrasonography in all patients and by computed tomography in 18. Angiography was performed in all patients with diagnostic confirmation of a benign
hemangioma
in all but one patient in whom an angiosarcoma was suspected. The resection was feasible in each patient: 20 minor hepatic resections (three wedge, 11 segmentectomies, six bisegmentectomies) and four right hepatic lobectomies were carried out. There were no surgical deaths. Two patients had postoperative complications: one patient had a pneumonia on the right side and one had wound infection. The benign nature of the tumors was confirmed in all. The lesions varied in size from 5.6 to 26 centimeters in diameter. Symptoms and hematologic disorders were relieved in all patients in the follow-up. The results of our experience confirm that resection for giant symptomatic hepatic
hemangioma
represents a safe radical curative procedure. Medical treatment is justified in smaller lesions or in asymptomatic patients.

The overall spectrum of hemangiomas involving long tubular bones is exemplified by three cases, the first being medullary, the second periosteal, and the third intracortical. The clinical presentation was progressive
pain
at the site of the lesion in all cases. The medullary
hemangioma
involved the distal shaft of the humerus and was entirely radiolucent. The periosteal tumor was exceptional in that it affected the proximal shaft of the tibia in contrast to the seven previously reported cases that involved the midshaft of the bone. The intracortical
hemangioma
was in the tibia, the site of all three previously reported cases.
Hemangioma
of bone may show variable roentgenographic patterns related to the anatomic location and the type of involved bone. The final diagnosis is dependent on histologic evaluation.

Solitary
hemangioma
located in the skeleton of the hand is a rare tumor, very different from diffuse angiomatosis or benign,
hemangioma
, located in the two distal phalanges of the right fourth finger. Due to articular stiffness,
pain
, and cosmetic problem, the treatment consisted of central ray resection. The pathological examination revealed a true benign skeletal
hemangioma
with marked bone resorption of the phalangeal skeleton. The soft tissues ant the periosteum were not involved.

The authors describe 42 cases of lesions of the musculoskeletal apparatus (traumatic, pseudoneoplastic or tumorous) in which selective arterial transcatheter percutaneous embolization (SAE) was indicated. In 3 patients SAE was not performed because the angiography had shown it to be too dangerous for the spinal cord. Out of 39 patients 2 were embolized in order to stop unrestrainable hemorrhaging (1 post-traumatic and 1 post-bioptic), 7 in order to reduce intraoperative bleeding, while in 7 cases (aneurysmal bone cyst,
angioma
of bone) the aim was curative. In the remaining 23 patients SAE was performed for adjuvant (8) or palliative (15) purposes in association with radio-and/or chemotherapy (11). In these last 15 cases the clinical results obtained were good in 67% of the cases, with partial or total regression of
pain
. Healing was obtained in 100% of the patients treated for curative purposes.

We present here a case of cavernous
hemangioma
of the parotid which presented as an acute emergency with sudden
pain
, trismus and swelling. The patient subsequently developed a complete lower motor neuron facial palsy a few hours after a fine needle aspiration biopsy was performed. Total parotidectomy with preservation of the facial nerve relieved the patient of all his symptoms with complete recovery of facial function in six weeks.

Hemangiomas
are the most common tumor of infancy and are characterized by rapid growth during the first 6 months of life. During the rapid growth phase, approximately 5% to 10% of the hemangiomas ulcerate. Ulcerated lesions are painful, may bleed, and are at risk for bacterial infection. Previous therapy has included daily local wound care, topical antibiotics, and local and systemic steroids. We treated nine infants (eight female and one male) with ulcerated hemangiomas by means of a vascular-specific (585-nm) pulsed (450-microsecond) tunable dye laser. Eight of the nine patients had a single ulceration, whereas one patient had two ulcerations within a large
hemangioma
. Six of the ulcerations healed with a single laser treatment. One ulceration required two treatments to heal, and the remaining two required three treatments.
Pain
was subjectively decreased within 2 to 3 days in all patients after a single treatment. The pulsed tunable dye laser should be considered in the treatment of all ulcerated hemangiomas.

In the past five years, 16 adults (10 females, age 25-61 years, mean 48) with giant cavernous
hemangioma
of the liver measuring 15-31 cm (mean-19) underwent surgery in a single Institution. Diagnosis was made with the help of multimodal investigations- ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), hepatic angiography, hepatic scintigraphy and fine needle biopsy. Ultrasound and CT had sensitivities of 69% and 82% respectively. Fourteen had preoperative selective hepatic artery embolization to study its effect on operative blood loss. Indication for surgery in all cases was a large abdominal mass with varying severity of
pain
. In addition, 5 had hemetological and/or coagulation abnormalities, hemobilia in 1 and pyrexia in 1. Seven left lobectomies, 3 left lateral segmentectomies, 2 right lobectomies, 2 right trisegmentectomies and 4 non-anatomical resections of 1 to 3 segments were performed. Postoperative complications developed in 25% with no operative mortality. Preoperative selective hepatic artery embolization helped to decrease the operative hemorrhage in 13 (mean blood loss- 1146 ml). In two cases severe bleeding required use of Cell-saver and massive donor blood transfusion. Our results suggest use of preoperative selective hepatic artery embolization and Cell-saver as an adjunct to the liver resection for these vascular tumors.

Cavernous hemangioma of the heart is a very rare disease. A 57-year-old male patient was admitted due to frequent onset of dull chest pain, which had been occurring for about 1 year. The
pain
was not related to exercise and was not relieved with nitroglycerin. On echocardiographic examination, a tumor was shown in the outflow tract of the right ventricle and was confirmed with computer tomography. He underwent open heart surgery for resection of the tumor. After a median sternotomy and opening of the pericardial cavity, a reddish-brown-colored tumor, 3 cm in diameter, was found protruding from the epicardial layer of the right ventricular outflow tract. The tumor involved all layers of the ventricle and could be resected only with the help of the cardiopulmonary bypass technique. The defect in the right ventricle was repaired with a woven dacron patch. The patient recovered without incident after the operation, and experienced no chest pain during 7 months of follow-up. Histology showed it to be a cavernous
hemangioma
.
