Plasma concentrations of glucose, alanine, and glucagon were measured after 24 hour fasting in newborn and infant sheep and in response to infusion of alanine alone and concurrently with theophylline. The plasma glucagon response to alanine was minimal in newborn sheep; in contrast, alanine produced a brisk response in plasma glucagon concentration in infant sheep. Glucose concentrations were unchanged in both groups. Theophylline enhanced blood glucagon and glucose responses to alanine in newborn animals but had minimal effects on the response of the infant sheep. These data, considered with earlier data in fetal sheep, suggest a progressive maturation of pancreatic islet alpha-cell glucagon secretion in the sheep during the postnatal period and suggest that the blunted glucagon response observed in the neonate is related to immaturity of the glucagon secretion mechanisms rather than deficient synthesis of the hormone. This immaturity may be related to impaired synthesis and/or enhanced degradation of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) or to diminished responsiveness to cAMP.

Abnormalities of the optical media or alignment of the eyes during the period of visual immaturity may produce pathologic changes in the brain resulting in the clinical entity of subnormal vision known as amblyopia. Efforts to prevent visual deterioration or restore normal acuity where amblyopia exists require early diagnosis and treatment. Although amblyopia affects between 1% and 5% of children, it is estimated that at most one-fourth of preschool children are screened for this major treatable eye disorder. Simultaneous photography of the corneal and fundus reflex from both eyes using an offaxis flash photorefractor appears to be a practical, efficient, and effective method of eye-screening in pre-verbal children. Previous studies of this modality have dealt with populations referred to ophthalmology centers. We report the results of a masked validation of a commercially available photorefractor in an unselected group of children between the ages of 6 months and 6 years.

Sixty two samples of amniotic fluid were submitted to biochemical investigation including 31 samples from women with pregnancy complicated by hypertension (studied group with blood pressure -65 +/- 15/95 +/- 5 mm Hg) and 31 samples deriving from healthy pregnant women (control group with mean blood pressure 118 +/- 10/74 +/- +/- 9 mm Hg). The following parameters of amniotic fluid were measured: 1) aminotransferases: alanine AlAT and aspartate AspAT, 2) alkaline phosphatase (APt) and its thermostable isoenzyme (APh), 3) ceruloplasmin (Crlp), 4) alpha-amylase (alpha-Amy). The study showed pregnancy complicated by hypertension is related to fetal salivary gland's immaturity presenting decreased activity of alpha amylase in amniotic fluid. Amniotic fluids deriving from women with pregnancy complicated by hypertension showed normal activities of AlAT, AspAT, APt, APh and Crlp.
