Pulmonary surfactant proteins and lipids are required for lung function after birth. Lung
immaturity
and resultant surfactant deficiency cause respiratory distress syndrome, a common disorder contributing to morbidity and mortality in preterm infants. Surfactant synthesis increases prior to birth in association with formation of the alveoli that mediate efficient gas exchange. To identify mechanisms controlling perinatal lung maturation, the Calcineurin b1 (Cnb1) gene was deleted in the respiratory epithelium of the fetal mouse. Deletion of Cnb1 caused respiratory failure after birth and inhibited the structural maturation of the peripheral lung. phosphatase has a pivotal role in development and maturation of cerebellar granule cells (CGCs). P8 cultures were used to analyze the levels of expression of B cell lymphoma 2 (BCL2) protein, and, after particle-mediated gene transfer in CGCs, to study the posttranslational modifications of BCL2 fused to a fluorescent tag in response to a perturbation of K(+)/Ca(2+) homeostasis. There are no changes in Bcl2 mRNA after real time PCR, whereas the levels of the fusion protein (monitored by calculating the density of transfected CGCs under the fluorescence microscope) and of BCL2 (inWestern blotting) are increased. After using a series of agonists/antagonists for ion channels at the cell membrane or the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), and drugs affecting protein synthesis/degradation, accumulation of BCL2 was related to a reduction in posttranslational cleavage by macroautophagy. The ER functionally links the [K(+)](e) and [Ca(2+)](i) to the BCL2 content in CGCs along two different pathways. The first, triggered by elevated [K(+)](e) under conditions of

Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are severe neuropsychiatric disorders, affecting about 1% of the population. Identifying endophenotypes in the brains of neuropsychiatric patients is now considered the way to understand the underlying mechanisms and to improve therapeutic outcomes. However, the endophenotypes and brain mechanisms of the disorders remain unknown. We have previously reported that alpha-CaMKII heterozygous knockout mice show abnormal behaviors related to neuropsychiatric disorders. In these mutant mice, almost all neurons in the hippocampal dentate gyrus stay at a pseudo-immature state, which we refer to as "immature dentate gyrus (iDG)." So far, the iDG phenotype and similar behavioral abnormalities have been found in Schnurri-2 knockout, SNAP-25 mutant, and forebrain-specific
calcineurin
knockout mice. In addition, we found that both chronic fluoxetine treatment and pilocarpine-induced seizures can reverse the maturation state of the mature neurons, resulting in the iDG phenotype in wild-type mice. Such an iDG-like phenomenon was observed in the post-mortem brains from patients with schizophrenia/bipolar disorder. Recent studies suggest that cortex and amygdala of schizophrenia patients are also at a pseudo-immature state. Based on the findings, we proposed that
