Scanning electron microscopy of adenomatous intestinal tissue in the blue fox revealed an irregular surface topography of the colon with increased diameter of the crypt openings and prominent ridge formations between crypts. The ileum showed villous atrophy and fusion. Microvilli were short and irregular. Small ulcerations of intestinal mucosa were seen. Freeze-fracture revealed curved intracellular organisms in the altered epithelial cells. Transmission electron microscopy showed features associated with immaturity and high protein synthesis. Filamentous extensions from the basolateral plasma membrane of altered epithelial cells sometimes penetrated the basal lamina. The cytoplasm contained numerous polyribosomes, nuclei had many indentations and large and irregular nucleoli. Intracellular bacteria, with morphology corresponding to Campylobacter spp. were found in the apical epithelial cytoplasm. No host-cell-derived membrane was seen to surround the bacteria.

Blast cells in acute leukemia and lymphoma appear to be "frozen" at various stages of lymphoid cell differentiation. The enzymatic and antigenic phenotypes expressed by these cells often correspond to the gene products of their normal precursors. We have used various immunocytochemical and enzymatic techniques to identify membrane, nuclear, and cytoplasmic markers associated with the prolactin-dependent Nb2 lymphoma cell line. The Nb2 cells, whether stationary or in log-phase growth, did not express any surface immunoglobulin. However, 100% of the Nb2 cells bound both a monoclonal antibody raised to rat thymocyte W3/25-HLK, which specifically binds an antigenic determinant on rat T-helper cells, and second monoclonal antibody OX8-HL, which identifies rat nonhelper T-cells. Transmission electron microscopy showed no evidence of phagocytic vacuoles, and activity of the lysosomal enzyme muramidase was also absent. There was no evidence of the DNA polymerase enzyme terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase. alpha-Naphthyl acetate esterase activity was indicated in about 50% of the Nb2 cells by a faint particulate cytoplasmic staining similar to that found in thymocytes. Rosette formation with guinea pig erythrocytes, a property of mature rat thymocytes, was not observed with Nb2 cells. The data suggest that the Nb2 tumor may have arisen from a thymocyte at an intermediate stage of differentiation. The presence of Thy-like alpha-naphthyl acetate esterase pattern and the binding of both W3/25-HLK and OX8-HL support the thymic origin and relative immaturity of these lymphoid cells. It is becoming increasingly apparent that a significant proportion of lymphomas and leukemias also originate in undifferentiated thymic cels.

Facticious accumulation of the radiopharmaceutical in the urinary draining system as shown by routine renal tests, like technetium- 99m-diethylenetriamine pentacetic acid, technetium-99m-mercaptylacetyltriglycine or technetium-99m-glucoheptonate renograms can be re-evaluated by administering a diuretic, like furosemide (FS) and obtaining post FS dynamic and static images. Urinary tract obstruction can thus be identified. Partial urinary tract obstruction, the effectiveness of stenting, the effectiveness of obstruction correcting surgery and retroperitoneal lymph nodes, may be diagnosed after FS induced diuresis. However, factors like loss of the compliance of the renal pelvis or the ureter, low renal function, renal immaturity in neonates and full or neurogenic bladder limit the diagnostic effectiveness of FS. Diuretic enhanced Doppler sonography and dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging can also be used for the evaluation of partial or complete urinary tract obstruction. The FS induced diuresis procedure is compared to other related diagnostic techniques.

Arboreal mammals face unique challenges to locomotor stability. This is particularly true with respect to juveniles, who must navigate substrates similar to those traversed by adults, despite a reduced body size and neuromuscular immaturity. Kinematic differences exhibited by juveniles and adults on a given arboreal substrate could therefore be due to differences in body size relative to substrate size, to differences in neuromuscular development, or to both. We tested the effects of relative body size and age on quadrupedal kinematics in a small arboreal marsupial (the sugar glider, Petaurus breviceps; body mass range of our sample 33-97 g). Juvenile and adult P. breviceps were filmed moving across a flat board and three poles 2.5, 1.0 and 0.5 cm in diameter. Sugar gliders (regardless of age or relative speed) responded to relative decreases in substrate diameter with kinematic adjustments that promote stability; they increased duty factor, increased the average number of supporting limbs during a stride, increased relative stride length and decreased relative stride frequency. Limb phase increased when moving from the flat board to the poles, but not among poles. Compared with adults, juveniles (regardless of relative body size or speed) used lower limb phases, more pronounced limb flexion, and enhanced stability with higher duty factors and a higher average number of supporting limbs during a stride. We conclude that although substrate variation in an arboreal environment presents similar challenges to all individuals, regardless of age or absolute body size, neuromuscular immaturity confers unique problems to growing animals, requiring kinematic compensation.
