The authors investigate the psychological reactions of 78 adolescent girls undergoing abortion during the first trimester of pregnancy. Adolescent emotion responses differ from those of adult patients in 2 ways: 1) the abortion decision is more "outer-other" directed by parents, peer group or sexual partner and is therefore more difficult and 2) developmental immaturity contributes to ambivalence about the decision, to distorted perception of procedure, and to a variety of pathological reactions. Patient symptoms suggest a mourning process in response to failure to realize an expectation rather than an object loss. Preabortion dreams are a potential adjuvant to psychiatric diagnosis and prognosis for adolescent patients.
