Plasmacytoma of the skull-base is a rare entity. Differential diagnosis includes chordoma,
osteosarcoma
, carcinoma nasopharynx, meningioma, metastatic carcinoma, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. Accurate and precise diagnosis is extremely important for plasmacytoma of the skull-base as its treatment and prognosis is different from other skull-base lesions. A 41-year-old man presented with concerns of headache, diplopia, and left eye strabismus. A magnetic resonance image (MRI) of his brain showed a large expansile mass measuring 51 mm involving the clivus and central skull-base. Trans-sphenoidal tumor decompression was done. A biopsy confirmed the plasmacytoma. A positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) scan showed a single 2-(18F) fluoro-
D-glucose
(FDG) avid lesion at the skull-base. The results of all other relevant investigations such as hemoglobin, renal function test, serum calcium, serum protein immunoelectrophoresis, serum quantitative immunoglobulin, bone marrow biopsy, serum lactate dehydrogenase, and beta-2 microglobulin levels were within normal limits. He was treated with radical radiotherapy. He developed complete clinical response after radiotherapy.

Second primary malignancy (SPM) is a severe issue for cancer survivors, particularly for
osteosarcoma
(OS) survivors. To date, the associations between subsequent SPM and OS have been well reported. Hematogenic and solid malignancies tend to occur following OS treatment. Reportedly, 2-[
18
F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-
D-glucose
positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is mainly used in OS patients for initial cancer staging, to evaluate the response of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and when recurrence or metastasis is clinically suspected. The present case report describes a 70-year-old man diagnosed with three primary malignancies: jaw OS, myelodysplastic syndrome and colorectal adenocarcinoma. To the best of our knowledge, this combination of malignancies has not been reported previously. Until now, there is no specific protocol of postoperative FDG-PET for OS patients. Few studies have described OS follow-up methods; therefore, there is no consensus on proper follow-up methods. In the present case report, the colorectal early-stage SPM was observed, without any symptoms, by FDG-PET/computed tomography. To avoid overlooking solid SPMs, it is suggested that FDG-PET should be performed in the long-term follow-up of OS patients.

Discrimination of cancer cells at the single-cell metabolic level is crucial for early diagnosis. However, some cancer cells share similar metabolic information with normal cells, making them difficult to be distinguished using mass spectrometry. Herein, we propose a method by treating
osteosarcoma
cells and normal human osteoblasts with
mannose
as a stimulant, which greatly promotes the metabolic discrimination of
osteosarcoma
cells at the single-cell level. The low PMI (
mannose
6-phosphate isomerase) level of both
osteosarcoma
cell lines compared to normal human osteoblasts is the reason for the abnormal metabolic pathway of two
osteosarcoma
cell lines with
mannose
treatment. We also found that the level of hexoses-6P in
osteosarcoma
cells significantly increased after
mannose
treatment, while no such increase was found in normal human osteoblasts. The proposed method is very meaningful for early diagnosis of cancer.
