The diets and nutrition of hunter-gatherers are discussed with the !Kung Bushmen (San) of the Dobe area, Botswana as the example. In general they show no qualitative deficiency of specific nutrients though they are thin and may be undernourished (by our standards) at some seasons. They show little or no obesity, dental caries, high blood pressure or coronary heart disease; their blood lipid concentrations are very low; and they can live to a good old age if they survive infections or accidents.

There is a need for reeducation of the population, especially in developed countries, as to the value of cereals in the diet. Cereals provide calories and important nutrients to the diet. Refined cereal products and unrefined cereals have certain advantages and disadvantages. With refinement, some nutrients and fiber are removed, but the body is better able to make use of certain nutrients. Essential nutrients are being replaced through fortification to compensate for losses in processing. The high fiber content of unrefined cereal products is believed to aid in the prevention of certain diseases. Special dietary bakery products have been introduced for the treatment of conditions generally exacerbated by standard food items. The increased consumption of cereal products appears warranted as a means of decreasing the saturated fat and cholesterol consumption. Cereals and cereal products have been mentioned in connection with allergies, celiac disease, schizophrenia, obesity, dental caries, cancer, atherosclerosis, goiter, and diverticulosis. This review discusses the possible role of cereals in the prevention or cause of these health problems.

Carbohydrates are a major component of our food, they are important as body energy stores and they play an important role in cellular structures. In the present paper a classification of food carbohydrates, of dietary fibers and sweeteners is presented and the major physiological effects are discussed. Furthermore, the significance of carbohydrates for the etiology and the treatment of nutrition related diseases which are closely related to the development of arteriosclerosis is outlined. Carbohydrates are beside fat the major determinants of the daily caloric intake. This illustrates their impact on the development of obesity with its predominant role as a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, the role of sugar consumption in the relation to dental caries is stressed. Also the central role of carbohydrate consumption for the treatment of diabetes mellitus is described. Problems of the diabetes diet, the role of the dietary fiber in the treatment of different diseases and the necessity of sweetness in nutrition are discussed in greater detail.

Prader-Labhart-Willi Syndrome is a complex, multisystem sporadic disorder which presents during childhood and proceeds into adulthood. The major features include infantile hypotonia, developmental delay, hypogonadism with abnormal sexual maturation, mental retardation and behavior abnormalities, short stature with small hands and feet, massive obesity with diabetes mellitus, dysmorphic facial features, and marked dental caries and enamel hypoplasia. Recently, a deletion of chromosome 15 has been found in a large percentage of these patients, but the exact cause and genetic transmission has not yet been determined. Two cases of Prader-Labhart-Willi Syndrome are presented with emphasis on the differential diagnosis of enamel hypoplasia associated with sexual maturation.

In this paper the nutritional disorders associated with affluence in Bahrain are reviewed and analysed. Heart diseases, obesity, diabetes mellitus, cancer, and dental caries are becoming the main public health problems in the country. The major aetiological factors leading to such a situation are change in lifestyle, high per capita income, change in food consumption patterns, and ineffective preventive measures. Programmes to control the disease of affluence should be given a high priority in any health plan. Emphasis should be placed on initiating intervention nutrition programmes, training health staff and carrying out epidemiological studies.

The aim of the present study was to explore the possibility of predicting the incidence of dental caries from obesity. The subjects were 516 children living in Luvia, Finland, born between 1972 and 1981. Obesity alone was not a very good predictor of dental decay. When predicting caries in the permanent first molars using both earlier obesity and earlier caries experience as predicting indicators, 65-70% of the true risk group was identified. This combination was even better for the prediction of caries in permanent second molars.

Recent studies of vegetarian diets and their effects on morbidity and mortality are reviewed. Vegetarian diets are heterogeneous as are their effects on nutritional status, health, and longevity. Mortality rates are similar or lower for vegetarians than for nonvegetarians. Risks of dietary deficiency disease are increased on vegan but not on all vegetarian diets. Evidence for decreased risks for certain chronic degenerative diseases varies. Both vegetarian dietary and lifestyle practices are involved. Data are strong that vegetarians are at lesser risk for obesity, atonic constipation, lung cancer, and alcoholism. Evidence is good that risks for hypertension, coronary artery disease, type II diabetes, and gallstones are lower. Data are only fair to poor that risks of breast cancer, diverticular disease of the colon, colonic cancer, calcium kidney stones, osteoporosis, dental erosion, and dental caries are lower among vegetarians. Reduced risks for chronic degenerative diseases can also be achieved by manipulations of omnivorous diets and lifestyles.

In recent years, the results of research studies have suggested a positive beneficial relationship between a vegetarian-based diet and low incidence of diseases, including coronary heart disease, cancer, obesity, dental caries, and osteoporosis. beta-Carotene has specifically been suggested as a nutrient with antitumorigenic properties. In this regard there is a need to evaluate the carotenoid content of foods. Legumes are one of the staple components of a vegetarian diet. This review specifically surveys the prevalence of carotenoids in food and forage legumes. In addition, the methods available for carotenoid analysis are discussed; factors affecting the determination of carotenoid content during maturation, germination, processing and storage are identified; research areas which have been inadequately explored are identified; and suggestions are made for future lines of investigation.

In addition to benefiting from public health programs for all Americans, American Indians and Alaska Natives are eligible for health services from the Indian Health Service (IHS), U.S. Public Health Service. Indian Health Service provides comprehensive health services, including nutrition and dietetics, to American Indians and Alaska Natives living on or near federal Indian reservations or in traditional Indian territory, such as Oklahoma and Alaska. Dramatic improvements have occurred in the health of native Americans since IHS was transferred to the Public Health Service in 1955. Infant mortality rate, maternal deaths, and deaths related to infectious diseases have all decreased. Chronic diseases are now major causes of death. Nutritional factors contribute to at least 4 of the 10 leading causes of American Indian and Alaska Native deaths--heart disease, cancer, cirrhosis, and diabetes--and to the prevalence of overweight, obesity, hypertension, and dental caries. There is still incomplete information on nutritional status and present dietary patterns, nutritive values of native foods, and nutrition education knowledge of the population. Priority nutrition objectives have been developed to address those issues.

Two male nonconsanguineous cases (aged 4 years) of Prader-Willi syndrome are clinically and cytologically studied. Both had obesity, marked hypogonadism, reduced head circumference, psychomotor impairment, hypotonia, tooth decay, small hands and feet, immature EEG. Case 1 showed a "de novo" translocation 7;15 and case 2 showed a normal karyotype. According to various authors, many cases of Prader-Willi syndrome show the presence of a translocation of chromosome 15 onto an autosome or X chromosome. This is the first observation of chromosome 7 involvement in this translocation.
