The authors used a modification of ENG investigation which makes possible recording of the movements of each eyeball separately in two planes: horizontal and vertical. The authors used this method for analysis of cases with lesions of the motor nerves of to the eyeballs. The group included 20 patients with lesions of the motor nerves of the eyeballs of various origin. The control group included 20 healthy subjects. In nerve lesions a decrease of intensity of ENG tracings was observed when the rapid phase of nystagmus agreed with the direction of action of the eliminated motor nerves. Provocation of eyeballs to movements of lower amplitude but greater angular velocity (the test of induced nystagmus) increased changes. The change of deviation angle during investigation had also an effect on the appearance of pathological changes in the record. Changes were observed also in the motor activity of the unaffected eyeball.

A case of epiphyseal tumour diagnosed by means of positive-contrast ventriculography in a male patient is reported. Treatment included ventriculoatriostomy and radiotherapy. In the clinical picture of the disease signs of intracranial hypertension prevailed together with hypothalamic endocrine disturbances, and in view of absent pathognomonic signs of lamina quadrigemina lesion considerable difficulties were encountered and craniopharyngioma was suspected. In the light of the pertinent literature and the present observations the possibility of early diagnosis of epiphyseal tumours based on disturbances of vertical optokinetic nystagmus and changes in auditory tests deserves attention.

The authors report a woman aged 53 years with the main components of the syndrome of Opalski coexisting with signs characteristic of Wallenberg's syndrome. The lacking components of the former syndrome included Horner's syndrome, while nystagmus, diplopia without evident oculomotor nerves, paresis, disturbances of speech and deglutition belonged to the latter syndrome. The clinical pattern and the course of the disease suggested a vasogenic focus in the right submedullary region and inferolateral part of the medulla.

In 14 myasthenics tensilon test was performed together with electronystagmographic recording of optokinetic nystagmus. The mean amplitude of deflections and the mean frequency of nystagmus were calculated before and after intravenous administration of tensilon 10 mg. The results were compared with those obtained in a control group. The test was positive in 11 myasthenics: the amplitude and frequency of nystagmus beats increased and extinction at the end of the test was absent or diminished. In the control group the test was negative, with the exception of 3 cases in which a slight increase in amplitude and frequency was observed. The authors stress the advantages and disadvantages of tensilon test and state that it is diagnostically valuable in myasthenia and myasthenic syndromes in subjects sensitive to the drug.

In a 19-year-old man sudden Bell's palsy developed and after 2 days vertigo and peripheral-type nystagmus supervened. ENG demonstrated presence of spontaneous nystagmus on right gaze and lack of excitability of the left horizontal canal. The cerebrospinal fluid was normal, virological examination failed to demonstrate presence of antibodies to zoster virus or a rise of antibodies to enteroviruses. Vertigo and nystagmus disappeared within several days. Bell's palsy regressed later. The results of virological investigations cast doubt on the views of these authors who regard Frankl-Hochwart syndrome as a variety of Ramsay Hung Syndrome. In the presently reported case the possibility of zoster virus being the cause of the disease has been ruled out.

In 32 patients with coma of varying intensity and aetiology the effect of light on caloric nystagmus was studied. During consciousness disturbances a light stimulus provoked or increased the intensity of induced caloric nystagmus. This reaction was thus a reverse (paradoxical reaction) of that observed in waking state. Photic stimulation may provoke the rapid phase of nystagmus through facilitating impulses coursing from the subcortical or cortical visual centres to Cajal's nuclei and then through the reticular formation to the vestibulo-oculomotor system. In waking state these impulses are inhibited while in precomatic state they may become prevalent. The paradoxical reaction disappears in deep coma together with all vestibular reactions.

Opioids, barbiturates and volatile organic substances are the most common drugs used in Poland by addicts. In the literature there are no data concerning efficiency of vestibular organs of addicted persons examined during abstinence period. 74 drug addicts and 50 healthy persons were subjected to ENG examinations (spontaneous nystagmus, positional ny gaze ny, eye-tracking test, optokinetic test, rotatory test and caloric test were evaluated). ENG showed abnormal records in all tests performed in the addicted persons. This study has revealed that addicts have insufficiency of vestibular organs, which is probably a result of central lesions.

The aim of the paper was evaluation of behaviour of the balance system in patients with clinical otospongiosis and after stapedectomy. The investigation was carried out in 131 otosclerotic patients. Before and post operation vertigo was noticed and the spontaneous nystagmus, positional nystagmus and directional preponderance in kinetic test were examined in ENG. Vertigo and objective symptoms of disturbance of the vestibular function were found in clinical otospongiosis, but postoperative subjective and objective symptoms were more frequently.

In this paper author described the significance of vestibular symptoms post stapedectomy in postoperative hearing improvement. Vertigo post stapedectomy was noted and spontaneous nystagmus, positional nystagmus and directional preponderance were examined. Postoperative hearing improvement in patients with and without vestibular symptoms was compared. Author maintained that recent symptoms of peripheral vestibular disfunction had made no difference in postoperative hearing improvement.

In the group of 37 patients with chronic carbon disulphide (CS2) intoxication manifested by encephalopathy, polyneuropathy or psycho-organic syndrome and complaining for vertigo, a statokinesiometric test was performed with open and closed eyes, and with visual stimulation. Basic test parameters of stabilograms and statokinesiograms were compared with standard values of the control group. Results of the test were additionally verified by electronystagmography with the recording of spontaneous, positional, optokinetic and post-rotatory nystagmus as well as the eye-tracking test. The statokinesiometry revealed postural stability disorder in 72.9% of patients. Balance disorders detected by means of this test showed high compatibility with results of electronystagmography which confirmed damage of the central part of vestibular system due to CS2 intoxication.
