Superficial vascular malformations of the face, trunk and limbs are better known today, and they can be divided up into simple and complex vascular malformations. Simple vascular malformations may form five major categories: immature hemangiomas of infants, port-wine stains, capillarovenous angiodysplasias, and arteriovenous fistulae and malformations. Complex angiodysplasias are systematized (Sturge-Weber and Bonnet-Dechaume-Blanc syndromes, Cobb's metameric angiomatosis, Klippel-Trenaunay and Parkes Weber's syndromes) or disseminated (Weber-Osler-Rendu disease and blue rubber-bleb nevus syndrome). Various modalities of treatment may be contemplated, according to the type of malformations, and an interdisciplinary consultation is essential to decide whether a watch-and-wait policy, a physical method (laser), embolization, fibrosing injections, vascular, maxillofacial or plastic surgery, or a successive combination of various techniques should be resorted to.

An animal model was developed, permitting the study of thromboxane A2 and prostacyclin neoformation, after arachidonic acid (AA) injection. Two types of physiopathological responses were observed, according to the rabbit strains. In the first type, prostacyclin neoformation was predominant, AA injection inducing only reversible hypotension. In the second type, thromboxane A2 neoformation was prevalent, AA injection inducing irreversible hypotension, marked myocardial troubles, shock, and death. In both types, injection of cicletanine (5 x 10(-5) mole/kg) significantly enhanced prostacyclin neoformation. After cicletanine, a new hypertensive drug, rabbits of the second type responded like those of the first type, without severe physiopathological responses to AA injections.

The combination of benign pseudo-tumors of the bone and visceral lesions are relatively frequent for chondromas, osteomas, fibromas and angiomas, which suggests for this group a pathogenic relationship between the bone lesions and others (dyschromias, endocrinian tumors, leiomyomas, naevus and gliomas) and a common dysembryoplasic origin. In contrast to these " bone hamartomas " there are pseudo-tumoral reactions where associations are exceptional. Also, there are slow tumors, a typical one being the myeloplaxis tumor. This logical classification makes it possible to better understand the pathogeny, the development and the prognosis of the disparate lesion generally described as " benign tumors of the bone ".

Surfactant self-diffusion coefficients have been measured on a binary system of 1-O-beta-3,7-dimethyloctyl-D-maltopyranoside (beta-Mal(2)(Ger))/water and a mixed surfactant system of beta-Mal(2)(Ger)/1-O-beta-3,7-dimethyloctyl-D-glucopyranoside (beta-Glc(Ger))/water at 25 degrees C. For comparison, measurements have also been made on 1-O-beta-decyl-D-maltopyranoside (beta-Mal(2)C(10))/water and beta-Mal(2)C(10)/1-O-beta-decyl-D-glucopyranoside (beta-GlcC(10))/water. The hydrodynamic radius of beta-Mal(2)(Ger) micelles obtained from the micellar diffusion coefficient is around 3 nm and nearly equal to that of beta-GlcC(10) micelles within experimental error. In the mixed surfactant systems, the hydrodynamic radii for both systems increase with increasing X(G) (the mole fraction of beta-Glc(Ger) or beta-GlcC(10) in the total mixed solute) above X(G) congruent with 0.4 when the total surfactant concentration is kept constant at 2 wt%. The R(H) of beta-Glc(Ger)/Mal(2)(Ger) micelles increases more rapidly than beta-GlcC(10)/beta-Mal(2)C(10) micelles, and then phase separation occurs at X(G) congruent with 0.65. On the other hand, the R(H) of beta-GlcC(10)/beta-Mal(2)C(10) micelles continues to increase until the phase separation occurs at X(G) congruent with 0.92. Measurements have also been performed as a function of total surfactant concentration at constant X(G) (=0.6). The CMC of the beta-Glc(Ger)/Mal(2)(Ger) system is larger than that of the beta-GlcC(10)/beta-Mal(2)C(10) system as expected from the results of the pure surfactant systems published previously. The R(H) increases with increasing total surfactant concentration for both systems. At higher concentrations, the R(H) of beta-Glc(Ger)/Mal(2)(Ger) micelles increases more rapidly than beta-GlcC(10)/beta-Mal(2)C(10) micelles. These results can be explained by the fact that the geranyl and decyl chains have the same volume but different chain lengths.

Among the primitive cardiac tumours, myxoma is the most common. This benign tumour is sometimes described in the context of Carney's syndrome, in which cardiac myxoma, cutaneous myxoma, lentigo and pigmentary nevus cutaneous lesions, endocrine disorders, and testicular, thyroid and hypophyseal tumours are associated. The cardiac myxomata observed are multiple, recurrent, and involve the four cardiac chambers, with a peak incidence at 25 years of age. These observations may exist in a familial context, linked to an autosomal dominant genetic factor, localized on the 17q2 chromosome with polymorphism of the PRKAR1a gene. As in the case of sporadic myxoma, rapid surgical treatment with cardio-pulmonary bypass is indicated, bearing in mind the increased risk of thromboembolic phenomena and sudden death from valvular encroachment. We report a case of bi-atrial myxoma observed in the context of Carney's syndrome.

Bean's syndrome ('blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome') is a rare disease characterized by venous malformations involving various organs. Most often these lesions are localized to the skin and the digestive system. Gastro-intestinal bleeding is the most frequent presentation. Though other organs can be affected, chest localizations are infrequent and pleural localization is exceptional. We report the case of an asbestos-exposed patient with Bean's syndrome with characteristic skin lesions, smoker, hospitalized for the investigation of a hemorrhagic pleural effusion. A medical thoracoscopy revealed pleural lesions similar to the cutaneous lesions and compatible with a pleural localization of the disease. This is the first documented case of this disease involving the pleura. A review of the literature was carried out on account of this clinical case.
