A 3-year-old Turkish boy with a history of chronic cough, recurrent bronchopneumonia, and a borderline sweat chloride test (40 mEq/L) was referred for further evaluation to our department. He was born at term (2100 g) to a marriage with no consanguinity. His mother and father were 40 and 46 years old, respectively. Physical examination (Fig. 1) revealed hypopigmented, atrophic, and hyperkeratotic skin lesions surrounded by reticulate hyperpigmentation on the entire body, predominantly on the face, neck, arms, shoulders, and legs, which had been noticed initially at the age of 18 months. Dystrophic toenails, sparse and thin hair, and phimosis were also observed. Laboratory tests disclosed an isolated
neutropenia
(white blood cell count, 1800/mm3). Bone marrow (BM) aspiration showed a decreased myelopoiesis without myelodysplastic changes, but normal erythropoiesis, megakaryopoiesis, and normal stroma. Lymphocyte subgroups containing CD4, CD5, CD6, CD8, CD19, CD23, and CD25, and immunoglobulin G (IgG), IgM, IgA, and IgE, were in the normal range; hemoglobin F (HbF), 2.8%. Spontaneous and clastogen-induced chromosome breaks were not increased. A skin biopsy showed increased pigmentation at the basal layer, dyskeratotic epidermal cells, and marked IgM deposition and cytoid bodies and mild IgA and IgG deposits at the dermo-epidermal junction.
Lactate
response to glucose challenge, amino acid chromatography, and urine organic acid analysis were normal. A diagnosis of dyskeratosis congenita (DC) was made with typical skin lesions, dystrophic toenails, thin and sparse hair, and
neutropenia
with decreased myelopoiesis in BM. Treatment with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) was considered for the
neutropenia
. As the increase in neutrophil count at a dose of 5 microg/kg was not adequate, 10 microg/kg G-CSF was tried (Fig. 2). With 10 microg/kg once to three times a week, a 1.8-4.8-fold increase in the absolute neutrophil count (ANC) was achieved with no side-effects. Treatment was more frequent during infection (days 22-28).

Candia tropicalis is an increasingly important human pathogen, causing nosocomial fungemia among patients with
neutropenia
or malignancy. However, limited research has been published concerning its pathogenicity. Based on the phenotypes of C. tropicalis in our previous study, we selected nine representative strains with different activities of virulence factors (adhesion, biofilm formation, secreted aspartic proteinases, and hemolysins), and one reference strain, ATCC750. The present study aimed to investigate the filamentation ability, the expression of virulence genes (ALST1-3, LIP1, LIP4, and SAPT1-4) and the cell damage of C. tropicalis strains with diverse virulences. C. tropicalis exhibited strain-dependent filamentation ability, which was positively correlated with biofilm formation. Reverse transcriptase PCR analysis showed that the ALST3 and SAPT3 genes had the highest expression in their corresponding genes for most C. tropicalis. The expressions of virulence genes, except ALST3 on polystyrene, were upregulated compared with growth in the planktonic and on human urinary bladder epithelial cell line (TCC-SUP) surface. Clustering analysis of virulence genes showed that isolates had a high biofilm forming ability on polystyrene formed a group.
Lactate
dehydrogenase assays showed that the cell damage induced by C. tropicalis markedly increased with longer infection time (24 and 48 h). Strain FXCT01, isolated from blood, caused the most serious cell damage; while ZRCT52, which had no filamentation ability, caused the least cell damage. Correlation analysis demonstrated significant correlation existed between adhesion on epithelial cells or the expression of ALST2-3 and cell damage. Overall, our results supported the view that adhesion and filamentation may play significant roles in the cell damage caused by C. tropicalis.

Objectives:
Barth syndrome is an ultra-rare, infantile-onset, X-linked recessive mitochondrial disorder, primarily affecting males, due to variants in

encoding for the cardiolipin transacylase tafazzin. This review aimed to summarize and discuss recent and earlier findings concerning the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and outcome of Barth syndrome.
Method:
A literature review was undertaken through a MEDLINE search.
Results:
The phenotype of Barth syndrome is highly variable but most frequently patients present with hypertrophic/dilated/non-compaction cardiomyopathy, fibroelastosis, arrhythmias,
neutropenia
, mitochondrial myopathy, growth retardation, dysmorphism, cognitive impairment, and other, rarer features.
Lactic acid
and creatine kinase, and blood and urine organic acids, particularly 3-methylglutaconic acid and monolysocardiolipin, are often elevated. Cardiolipin is decreased. Biochemical investigations may show decreased activity of various respiratory chain complexes. The diagnosis is confirmed by documentation of a causative
TAZ
variant. Treatment is symptomatic and directed toward treating heart failure, arrhythmias,
neutropenia
, and mitochondrial myopathy.
Conclusions:
Although Barth syndrome is still an orphan disease, with fewer than 200 cases described so far, there is extensive ongoing research with regard to its pathomechanism and new therapeutic approaches. Although most of these approaches are still experimental, it can be expected that causative strategies will be developed in the near future.

The novel Coronavirus disease 2019 continues to be a worldwide pandemic. Yet, little is still known about the biological features of this emergent infection in children. In this prospective study, we collected 68 children infected with SARS-COV-2 from March 2020 to May 2020, in Marrakesh, Morocco. No severe cases were observed in this cohort, and 66% of the patients were asymptomatic. The main laboratory abnormalities were hematological, as we found Leucopoenia in 4.4% of the cases, hyperleukocytosis in 1.6%.
Neutropenia
was found in 5 patients (7%) and only 2 cases (3%) had Lymphopenia. The inflammation and coagulation biomarkers were normal in the majority of the cases, as for liver and kidney function.
Lactate
dehydrogenase (LDH) serum levels were elevated in 8 cases (11.67%). The COVID-19 in children seems to have mild course and better outcome than in adults, which impacts the laboratory findings in this category. More studies must be conducted to learn more about the laboratory abnormalities in pediatric COVID-19.
