Human neuroblastoma (NB) is a highly malignant tumor arising in cells that originate in the embryonal neural crest. Several lines of investigation suggest that both NB and other tumors of developing tissues are blocked in their ability to differentiate and achieve growth arrest. Since in vivo differentiation of NB has been frequently observed and may be of clinical importance (Fox et al., 1959; Evans et al., 1976), we have utilized the in vitro induction of NB differentiation by retinoic acid (RA) to study the molecular events associated with NB differentiation. We have focused our studies on changes that occur in the expression of various proto-oncogenes during NB tumors cell differentiation because proto-oncogenes are likely to be of central importance in mediating processes critical for cellular growth and maturation. In these studies, we have found that the expression of no fewer than five proto-oncogenes including c-Ha-ras, c-ets-1, and c-fos change during the differentiation of NB cells, while the expression of c-erb-B changes in association with the arrest of growth that occurs during NB differentiation. In some cases the altered expression of a proto-oncogene was transcriptionally regulated, while in others post-transcriptional mechanisms were important.

In humans, rabies still is a fatally evolving encephalomyelitis caused by a Rhabdovirus of the genus Lyssavirus. In general, the disease is contracted through a contact with an infected mammal. Taxonomically, different rabies and closely related rabies-like viruses can be distinguished. New molecular identification techniques can be utilized as epidemiological tools to study the geographic distribution and presence in different reservoirs of the viruses. Antigenic diversity and new insights in the mechanisms of the immune response can have serious implication in vaccine strategies. Virus detection for diagnostic and epidemiological purposes can be done by immunofluorescency, by inoculating murine neuroblastoma cells and by using molecular techniques. Rabies is a zoonosis with a worldwide distribution. In Belgium, the epizootic is present in the Southern part of the country. Fox vaccination campaigns contributed significantly to the eradication of the virus from its natural reservoir. The importance of the prophylactic and therapeutic use of the vaccine, the control of wildlife animal reservoir and stringent public health measures to combat rabies is discussed. Due to stringent control measures, no endogenous case of human rabies have been reported since 1922 in Belgium.

Amplified region (amplicon) around MLL gene is closely linked to the 11q23.3 commonly deleted region of neuroblastoma, which includes cancer-associated genes such as PHLDB1 (LL5A), BCL9L, FOXN5 (FOXR1), CBL, MFRP, and PVRL1 (Nectin) genes. FOXN6 (FOXR2) gene at human chromosome Xp11.21 is generated due to retrotransposition of ancestral Foxn5 gene during evolution. FOXN5 and FOXN6 orthologs share the common domain structure consisting of FN56 and Forhead-box (FOX) domains. Here, we identified and characterized mouse Foxn5 gene by using bioinformatics. Mouse Foxn5, consisting of six exons, was located within mouse genome sequences AC122428.4 and AC125129.5. Foxn5 locus at mouse chromosome 9B was synthenic to rat chromosome 8q22 and human chromosome 11q23.3. Mouse Foxn5 (180 aa) was C-terminally truncated compared with rat Foxn5 and human FOXN5. Mouse 'Foxn5' protein without FOX domain was generated due to a frame shift introduced by germ-line one-base deletion within exon 3. Mouse Foxn5 mRNA was expressed in embryonic germ cells and fertilized eggs. Germ-line mutation of Foxn5 gene in the mouse lineage might lead to divergent scenario of early embryogenesis between mouse and rat through the deregulation of Foxn5 target genes in mouse early embryos, and explain the difficulty in manipulation of rat embryonic stem (ES) cells based on the mouse equivalent system. This is the first report on identification and characterization of mouse Foxn5 gene as well as on species specific germ-line mutation of the Fox family gene.

Retroperitoneal hemorrhage is known to cause bruising of flanks (Turner's sign), umbilicus (Cullen's sign), pubis and groin (Stabler's sign), upper thigh (Fox's sign), or scrotum (Bryant's sign). Spontaneous adrenal hemorrhage is the most common cause of nontraumatic parietal ecchymosis sign in neonates. Only 20 such neonatal cases have been reported in the literature. Because all of them were of benign etiology, conservative management is generally recommended in the presence of this sign. We report the sign for the first time in a case of spontaneously ruptured adrenal neuroblastoma of newborn. Perinatal physicians need to be aware of this unusual presentation of neonatal neuroblastoma.
