Based on 5 cases of juvenile astrocytomas the unusual behaviour of this type of tumor is described. It is expressed by local and/or diffuse spread of the neoplasms in the subarachnoid space of the brain hemispheres, cerebellum and spinal cord. The light and electron microscopic examinations have revealed the morphological features of well differentiated tumors of astrocytic origin and of fibrillary type which in a great number of cases have a favourable prognosis. The cause of break through into the subarachnoid space, despite its morphology which indicates on a high degree of differentiation of the tumors, is not known. The relation of primary to secondary infiltration of the subarachnoid space or of the leptomeninges is discussed.

Eight cases of alveolar soft part carcinoma (ASPS) are presented. The average age of the patients was 28 years. There were 6 women and 2 men. The left sided and right sided tumours were equal in number. Local recurrence was not observed in any of the patient treated, but lung metastases occurred in 6 of them. Three patients died with disease the average 35 months after treatment. Histologically in one case the uniform sheets of cells were observed without alveolar arrangement. The presence of beta glucuronidase (BG), acid phosphatase (AP) and non specific esterase (NE) in tumor cells was seen in one case studied. Immunohistochemical and ultrastructural examination confirm the thesis, that ASPS consist a distinct clinico-morphologic entity, the histogenesis of which remains uncertain.

A case of a rare angiogenic tumor in a 77-year-old man is reported. The clinical data and histological features are analyzed. The diagnosis was confirmed by immunohistochemical studies.

Clinical data and morphological features of the storiform neurofibroma, presenting as an exophytic tumor of the trunk in 30 years old white man are described. This benign tumor, is microscopically similar to dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans and differs from the letter by the presence of melanin containing cells.

A case of the malignant mesothelioma of pericardium is presented as this is rare primary neoplasm of pericardium. Diagnosis of the malignant mesothelioma of pericardium is a difficult clinical problem. The authors discuss the value of various diagnostic techniques used in diagnosis of the malignant mesothelioma of pericardium.

Using novel strategies, monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) were developed to two proliferation-associated nucleolar antigens. These two new antigens, termed P145 and P120, according to their molecular weights, were found in a broad range of tumor tissues. Overall, P120 was more restricted in its distribution than P145 because it was absent from many benign tumors and some malignant tumors. Using the MAbs as probes, antigens P145 and P120 were localized to separate nucleolar components. P145 was mainly associated with high molecular weight nucleolar RNPs. Antigen P120 was localized to a novel beaded microfibril found in a nucleolar residue fraction. DNAse and high salt treatment of this fraction provided optimal extraction of the P120 antigen. P145 and P120 differed from other proliferation-associated nuclear/nucleolar antigens identified by autoimmune sera and by other MAbs. In PHA stimulated lymphocytes, both antigens were expressed in early G1 prior to or concurrent with increased RNA Pol I transcription. Microinjection of tumor cells with the P120 MAb inhibited cell proliferation and blocked the appearance of nucleolar pleomorphism that is characteristic of tumor cells. Clinical studies showed that P145 was not detected in normal bone marrow but was expressed in leukemic marrows (AML); the percentage of P145 positive cells correlated with percentage of malignant blasts (Raza et al., Am. Soc. Hematology, 1990). Antigen P145 was detected in 10 of 39 marrows from patients in complete remission. This result suggested that these cells have a higher proliferative potential than normal stem cells.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

A case report of a cardiac metastasis from osteosarcoma of the pelvis is presented. The tumor obliterated nearly completely the right atrium and ventricle, inferior vena cava and pulmonary artery. It was successfully treated surgically and during a 9 month follow-up echocardiographical assessment was normal.

The authors present a case of coexistence of multiple sclerosis and craniopharyngioma. Such, a case has not been described up to now. The neoplasm was clinically not recognized because its signs were completely covered by multiple sclerosis symptoms.

An infection with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is directly associated with the development of the cervical and vulvar carcinomas. The infection should be diagnosed and considered in the choice of therapy. Taking no account of HPV infection in histological pictures may lead to overdiagnosis of Ca"0" (CIS). HPV infection is possible to be recognized--in most cases--in cytological and histopathological studies. Cytological and histopathological studies are the basis for other examination methods. The authors, who have been dealing with HPV problem for 10 years, describe characteristic morphological features of the HPV infection based upon original material accompanied by microscopic documentation. The article describes: the types of condylomas, morphological properties of koilocyte and dyskeratocyte with consideration of electronmicroscopic studies, specific features of the infected epithelium, the notion of koilocytic atypia and atypical condylomas, diagnostic difficulties, differentiation with classic dysplasia, the presence of changes typical for Bowen's disease of the cervix and Bowenoid papulosis on the vulva. Morphological diagnosis of the HPV infection worse--in many cases--confirmed by virusologic studies determining the type of the virus in the tissue. It is the authors' opinion that koilocytic atypia is a special form of the intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN, VIN). They emphasize the contribution of the HPV infection to the prevention of cancer of the uterine cervix and vulva.

Immunoreactivity directed towards the presence of a structural antigen of Papilloma virus (HPV) was studied in patients with benign epithelial proliferations in the perianal area, squamous cell and cloacogenic carcinomas of the rectum and anus, using Dako serum kits. Positive reaction was found in five of eleven pointed condylomas and in one squamous cell papilloma, which is in accordance with other reports. Negative reaction in patients with squamous cell carcinomas may result from methodologic limitations of immunohistochemical studies. In patients with cloacogenic carcinomas it may also indicate a lack of relationship between this type of a neoplasm and HPV infection. The latter probably requires the presence of mature keratocytes to proliferate.
