Evaluation of the ferritin as a neoplasm marker was performed in laryngeal cancer patients. In 35 laryngeal cancer patients and in 21 laryngeal leucoplakia patients the ferritin serum level and the blastic transformation of leucocytes were tested. In both groups the high ferritin level was discovered. It is the sign of low specificity of ferritin as a neoplasm marker. There was no correlation between the ferritin serum level and the degree of the blastic changes of leucocytes.

The rare case of epithelioma calcifying of Malherbe of the nose of the 9 years old girl was presented. The tumor was operated whole. The follow-up proved good health without recurrencies.

G6PD activity in erythrocytes was examined in 129 people with malignant neoplasms (83 males, 46 females). In all these subjects G6PD activity in erythrocytes was markedly higher than in the controls. Tumour surgery resulted in decreased activity of that enzyme in the erythrocytes. The controls were 53 healthy persons (38 males, 15 females) not exposed occupationally to carcinogens.

Prospective studies were carried out on the effectiveness of various treatment methods in 208 patients with plasmocytic myeloma. In 102 patients induction therapy was based exclusively on melphalan, in 106 cases polychemotherapy was used including vincristine, melphalan, carmustine, cyclophosphamide and prednisone. The differences in the per cent of patients with good response to treatment and in the survival time after treatment beginning were statistically not significant between these groups which suggests that polychemotherapy begun from the diagnosis of the disease is justified in patients with large mass of the neoplasm and poor prognostic factors. In 45 patients chemotherapy was supported by administration of immunomodulatory agents, including calf thymus extract in 25 cases, levamisole in 18 and interferon in 2. It was observed that maintenance of remission with chemotherapy and with immunomodulatory agents calf thymus extract or levamisole prolonged the survival of the patients. In cases of leucopenia the use of calf thymus extract facilitated chemotherapy by stimulation of myelopoiesis.

In 24 patients with Hodgkin's disease the activity of acid phosphatase was determined in granulocytes. Its level was only half that in the control group. The causes of this low activity of this enzyme may be increased number of cells without it, exocytosis, and possible influence of substances secreted by the neoplasm. It is suggested that the determination of this activity may be indirectly useful for verification of the efficacy of the antibacterial mechanisms, and also of antitumour resistance of the host.

Basing on results of tumor marker levels (CEA, ferritin, orosomucoid) in 271 lung cancer patients and 50 with non-malignant pulmonary diseases the authors found that assessment of different tumor markers is clinically more useful than single marker evaluation. Analysing several markers increases the specificity to almost 100% but decreases the sensitivity. Assessing several markers can help differentiating between malignant and non-malignant pulmonary disorders. It may also help in correctly staging the disease. A 12 month survival rate was seen only in 50% of the patients in whom the levels exceeded the cut-off value of two studied markers, whereas 90% survived 12 months if all marker levels were within normal levels. None of the patients with all markers exceeding the normal values survived one year after surgery. Survival rates of patients treated non-surgically were not influenced by the tumor marker levels.

Malignancy was diagnosed cytologically in a 62 year old female with exudative pericarditis. Despite extensive diagnostical procedures the primary source of the neoplasm could not be defined. After 18 months the patient died. Autopsy disclosed tuberculous pericarditis. The authors discussed the differential diagnosis between malignant and tuberculous pericarditis and the reasons for this diagnostical error.

The authors present a case report on a 17-year old male in whom focal neurological symptoms, abnormal EEG findings, tumors seen on CT scan of the brain and a normal chest radiogram produced grave diagnostic problems. The resected tumor from the occipital lobe proved to be a tuberculoma. The patient was treated with 6 antituberculous drugs. A control CT-scan demonstrated complete cure and resolution of tumors in the central nervous system. The source of the infection was the young male's father with sputum positive, active pulmonary tuberculosis.

A case of an endobronchial hamartoma localized in the right basal bronchus is presented. The tumor was ablated bronchoscopically. Due to uncertainty of total excision and coexistence of cirrhotic changes of the right lower lobe surgical removal of the lobe was carried out. Pathological examination of the removed specimen did not disclose any remnants of the hamartoma. During surgery another growth anomaly was discovered--a bilobar right lung.

A case of a 69 year old male hospitalized due to uncharacteristic respiratory symptoms and successfully treated for intestinal obstruction is presented. The intestinal obstruction was caused by a tumor which microscopically was a metastatic squamous cell bronchial carcinoma. Further diagnostic procedures revealed an advanced squamous cell right main bronchus cancer.
