origin and evolution currently is viewed as comprising a series of specific genetic events that take place in target cells and their clonal descendants. These events can be recognized at two levels: cytogenetic and molecular. The genetic results can be used as diagnostic and prognostic markers of neoplastic diseases. However, till now reports on the karyotypic characteristics of brain tumors are far from numerous. The most frequent cytogenetic alterations observed in primary brain tumors are losses or gains of chromosomes or chromosomal regions and presence of double minute chromosomes. Enhanced expression of several cellular oncogenes on human glioma cells lines were observed also.

We investigated the influence of recombinant human tumor necrosis factor alpha (rh-TNF alpha) administered as a single agent or in combination with cyclophosphamide (CY) or methotrexate (MTX) on the survival time of mice inoculated with lymphoblastic leukemia L1210 or lymphatic leukemia P388. The median survival time of leukemia L1210 bearing mice treated with rh-TNF alpha at doses ranging from 200 to 275 g/kg in daily i.p. injections was longer than that of control animals. Groups of mice with leukemia L1210 receiving rh-TNF alpha combined with either MTX or CY lived longer than animals treated with these agents individually. We observed only slight prolongation of life of animals inoculated with this
tumor
and treated with rh-TNF alpha at dose of 800 micrograms/kg in four injections on 2, 4, 6 and 8 day of experiment, and no effect when rh-TNF alpha was administered at dose of 200 or 400 micrograms/kg at the same treatment regime. In contrast no significant differences in lifetime were obtained from either simultaneous or sequential treatment of mice bearing leukemia P388. Groups of mice with this
tumor
treated with rh-TNF alpha in conjunction with either MTX or CY lived longer than controls, or rh-TNF alpha singly treated mice, but their survivals were not significantly prolonged compared with mice receiving cytostatics alone.

During the years 1977-1986 84 patients with the parotid
tumor
were treated in ENT Clinic in Lublin. 16.6% of tumors were malignant. The surgical procedure was performed in 74 cases (84.5%). There were the removal of
tumor
with or without the parotid gland resections. In all cases of resection the facial nerve was saved. In malignant tumor cases the radiotherapy followed the surgery. 13 patients with poor health conditions were treated without surgery. The early and late results were described.

In the radiologic assessment of extension tumors of parotid glands CT method was used and for comparative purposes sialography was performed. In comparative analysis there was assessed CT method and its usefulness in the preoperative assessment of
tumor
extension.

In the lymphocytes infected in vitro with BLV (bovine leukemia virus) the contents of Ca2+ and Mg2+ were determined using roentgen microanalyser JXA-5 A Joel-form (Japan). In the smears prepared from these cells the activity of enzyme markers of cell membranes i.e. alkaline phosphatase (AP - EC 3.1.3.1), 5'-nucleotidase (5'-NT - EC 3.1.3.5) and adenosine-triphosphatases - Ca2+ and Mg2+ dependent (ATP-ase - EC 3.6.1.3) was determined. The decrease in AP and ATP-assess activity and increase in 5'-NT in the membranes of leukemic lymphocytes were observed. During these changes the increase in Ca2+ and decrease in Mg2+ ions occurred. These processes lead to clear disturbances in the metabolism of cells transformed by the
neoplasm
. The effect of this phenomenon is probably the opening of calcium canals with the following cytoplasmatic hypercalcemia. It's very destructive for the change in permeability of the membrane of lymphocytes.

A significant increase in collagen content in breast benign dysplasia has been noted in comparison with normal breasts. Type I and type III collagens were isolated from the normal breast. These types constitute 70% and 25% of the total collagen contents in breast, respectively. It was found, that the major part of
tumor
collagen is present in the form of type I and type III collagens stable complex. This complex does not dissociate under conditions used for collagen isolation. Normal female breast does not contain such a complex.

Tumor
markers known to date are not sensitive and specific enough to detect malignant tumors. Therefore, attempts to find new markers have led to sialic acid assays in cancer patients. Serum sialic acid, CEA and ESR have been determined in 33 patients with the cancer of the colon. All patients have been divided into four groups, according to TNM cancer staging. Serum sialic acid levels have been increased by 100% of patients in groups I and IV. The most significant correlation was noted between sialic acid levels and ESR. No significant relationship between serum sialic acid and CEA have been noted. No correlation of the colon cancer stage, according to TNM staging, and sialic acid and CEA levels in the peripheral blood has been observed. It seems, however, that serum sialic acid assay may be useful auxiliary technique in the detection and monitoring of patients with colon cancer.

In the years 1987--1989 endoscopic biliary tree stenting was performed in 64 patients. The straight prostheses type Amsterdam 10 or 12 F and double pigtail prostheses were applied. In 36 cases the indication for stenting was malignant stricture of the biliary tree (group I) caused by carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater (n = 12), carcinoma of the head of the pancreas (n = 15), common bile duct and bifurcation
tumor
(n = 5) and gallbladder cancer (n = 4). In 28 cases the indications were common bile duct stones (group II) where stone size made endoscopic removal impossible and surgery was contraindicated. Normalisation or improvement of elevated serum bilirubin level was observed quite quickly after stenting (it decreased to about 50% of initial value after 7 days). Mean duration of prosthesis patency in group I patients who avoided surgical treatment was 144 days and mean survival time was 220 days. In group II patients mean duration of prosthesis patency was 183 days. Endoscopic biliary tree stenting is an advantageous alternative to surgical palliative++ treatment of obstructive neoplastic jaundice and constitutes an efficient method of treating common bile duct stones in poor operative risk patients.
