A 30-year-old woman, who had previously experienced artificial abortion and repeated curettage of the uterine cavity (for metrorrhagia), developed signs of pelvoperitonitis despite the administration of antibiotics. A tumor was located behind the uterus and above the fundus. As it was thought to be of an inflammatory infiltration, corresponding antiinflammatory treatment was administered. With this, the signs of peritonitis receted, although the tumor remained. Puncture of the recto-uterine vault and pregnancy tests were negative. Laparoscopic examination revealed a peritubar hematoma, resulting from a destroyed right oviduct. The cause of this was determined to be the ectopic development of a fetal ovum. Surgical intervention followed immediately which excised the destroyed oviduct.

In the reported group of 114 cases the overall operative mortality was 3,5% and when two incurable cases are escluded this mortality falls to 1,7%. An essential change in the management of this disease was abandoning of postoperative radiotherapy and increasing of the extent of tumour removal. This decision was based on the view that despite weak antigenicity of the neoplasm immune mechanisms mobilized after radical operation are sufficient to inhibit or even destroy the remaining tumour tissue. In the light of eight years of experience with this method it seems that it will pass the test of time.

Thirty-five ovarian tumors were examined (7 granulosa-cell tumors, 2 thecomas, 4 dysgerminomas, 6 mucinous cystadenomas, 10 serous cystadenomas, 2 adenocarcinomas, 3 Krukenberg tumors and 1 early embryonic tumor). The granulosa-cell tumors showed high activity of alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase, and the changed cells of their stroma--that of glucose-6 phosphate and isocitrate dehydrogenases. The activity of the latter enzymes was striking also in thecomas. Dysgerminomas showed high alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase and nonspecific esterase activities. The authors emphasize the role of stromal cells in the hormonal activity of ovarian neoplasms.

The authors report the clinical course of a case of carcinomatosis of the cerebrospinal meninges with frequent sudden rises of intracranial pressure and with lethal outcome. The primary tumour was a mucinous carcinoma of the ovary. In treatment Pudenz valve was used successfully for connecting the subarachnoid space of the spinal cord with the peritoneal cavity. This shunting of the cerebrospinal fluid caused no dissemination of the neoplasm within the peritoneal cavity.

The authors analyzed the signs and clinical data from the preoperative period in 39 patients with tumours of the conus terminalis and cauda equina. Most patients had been treated for a long time for lumbar discopathy with sciatic pains. Most symptoms and neurological signs were in many cases suggestive rather of lumbar disc prolapse than spinal tumour. Radiological examinations of the spine failed in a overwhelming majority of cases to provide clues for correct diagnosis, only the type of tendon jerks loss, results of Queckenstedt's test and protein level in the cerebrospinal fluid suggested spinal tumor as a cause of the disease. Contract radiological examination of the vertebral canal gave definite answer in all cases.

The activity of NADPH- and NADH-dependent erythrocyte glutathione reductase was determined in rats with Morris 5123 hepatoma at different stages of tumor development (10, 20, 30 and 40 days after transplantation). During the early stage of tumor growth the activity of glutathione reductase with either of these coenzymes was increased. In the late stage of the disease the activity of NADPH-dependent glutathione reductase fell below control values. The obtained results are discussed in the light of previous observations on the effects of this neoplasm on the metabolism of erythrocytes.

TFX (Thymus Factor X) extract from calf thymuses, was given for the first time in Poland to the patient suffering from advanced rectal cancer with perforation to the peritoneal cavity, diffuse fecal peritonitis and multiple metastases to the liver. The immunological, clinical and histopathological observations of the patient for the period of 12 months of treatment are presented. The patient was given the biologically active thymus extract in the total amount of 14.2 mg in 34 subcutaneous injections initially in single dose of 0.1 mg and later on in amount of 0.5 mg. The remarkable restoration of the immunological reactivity of the patient from a total energy to the state of hyperreactivity has to be emphasized. It has been confirmed by the delayed hypersensitivity skin tests (Rt-23, PHA), the increase of the number of RFC (TEa and TEt rosette test with the SRBC), the diminishing of the autolymphocytotoxicity of the peripheral lymphocytes (evaluated by DTL) and also by the high level of the absolute number of circulating lymphocytes in the peripheral blood. The improvement of the clinical condition of the patient consisted in total regression of the inflammatory and functional changes in the respiratory and cardiovascular systems and also in the renal function. The regular rectal endoscopic examinations of the patient revealed the diminished size of the tumor and its unusual appearance described as an induration and sharp delimitation from the surrounding tissues. The histological examinations performed 5 times during the observation period of 11 months revaled the essential changes in the structure of the growth: the marked increase of the stroma with the signs of active proliferation, foci calcification and ossification. These changes were interpreted as extremely rare in the rectal cancer stroma and are considered to represent dystrophic calcification at the neoplastic foci followed by ossification. It should be also pointed out that twelve months survival of the patient with advanced rectal cancer and multiple metastases to the liver represents an unusually long rate in comparison to that generally accepted in the literature for this grade of rectal cancer advancement.

In 40 patients with carcinoma of the larynx transformation of lymphocytes under the influence of PHA was studied. In 20 patients, in addition, venous blood flowing from the tumor, collected during the operation was also examined. In 33 patients the index of blastic transformation was lowered as compared with that in the control group. In 15 of 20 patients, the lymphocytes of venous blood from the vicinity of the tumor showed significantly higher indices of blastic transformation in comparision with those from peripheral blood. It was assumed that difference was due to an increased participation of T-lymphocytes in venous blood flowing from the tumor area. T-lymphocytes might move into the blood from the lymphoid infiltrates which accompany the neoplastic tissue.

Three cases of adenomatoid tumor of the uterus in women aged 30, 40 and 49 years, and three cases of the tumor situated in the oviducts in women aged 39, 43 and 50 years were analyzed micro- and macroscopically. A tubulo-canalicular, a microcystic and a mixed form were distinguished. Inflammatory changes in the oviducts, myomas and myomatosis of the uterus seem to be conducive to growth of adenomatoid tumor. The authors emphasize the diversity of microscopic structure, creating difficulties of differential diagnosis. Some histochemical reactions may be useful in diagnosis.

In two case of aorthochromatic anaemia refractory to treatment with granulocytopenia and thrombocytopenia without significant enlargement of abdominal viscera a hypothesis of uncontrolled proliferation involving proerythroblasts is put forward on the basis of bone marrow findings. This proliferation seems to be confined to a single focus-bone marrow, without evidence of peripheral dissemination. Profound dysplastic changes of proerythroblasts are suggestive of neoplastic growth.
