Studies of the chromatographic behavior of mammalian tRNAs, from several sources, on acylated DBAE-cellulose indicate that species of tRNA Asn , tRNA Asp and tRNA
His
can be retained on this matrix, while species of tRNA Tyr, tRNA Asn and tRNA Asp are not retained. Treatment of total rat liver tRNA with cyanogen bromide and subsequent chromatography on Aminex A-28 columns demonstrated that these tRNA species might contain Q (or Q*) nucleoside. However, comparable studies of the tRNA isolated from Walker 256 rat mammary tumor tissue demonstrated that this
tumor
tRNA almost totally lacks the hypermodified nucleosides Q and Q*. In addition, we have found that at least the major species of rat liver tRNA Asn contains the Q nucleoside. These studies indicate that chromatography on the acylated DBAE-cellulose matrix, couple with the analytical ion-exchange chromatography of cyanogen bromide treated and untreated amino-acyl-tRNA can be a valuable technique for the determination of alterations in the Q (or Q*) nucleoside content of the tRNAs isolated from normal and
tumor
tissues.

Selenium (Se) inhibition of either the activation of test compounds and/or mutagenic events elicited by activated compounds is suggested by experimental rat assays, mutagenesis assays, and assays with human lymphocytes in culture. The colon
tumor
incidence in 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH)-treated rats was reduced from 87% to 40% by 4 ppm Se supplements in the drinking water. Supplemental Se decreased the total number of colon tumors induced by DMH more than three-fold and by methylazoxymethanol (MAM) almost two-fold. Coexposure of Salmonella typhimurium TA 1538 to an effective molar ratio of Se/2-acetylaminofluorene=10, Se/N-OH-acetylaminofluorene=10 and SE/N-OH-aminofluorene=300 reduced the mutagenicity to 65, 68, and 61% of their respective controls with mutagen alone. With a molar ratio of Se/N-OH-AAF=100, Se reduced the activity to 28% of the mutagenicity of N-OH-AAF alone. Preliminary data indicating MAM is mutagenic in S. typhimurium TA 1535 and
His
G 46(6837) are presented. In toxicity studies exposure of human lymphocyte cultures to 1.3 X 10(-9) to 1.6 X 10(-5) M Se yielded sister chromatid exchange (SCE) rates equivalent to background levels of 6--7 SCE per cell. The SCE frequencies of lymphocytes cultured with Se and selected carcinogens are discussed.

Multiple infections and severe neutropenia were found in a previously healthy 29 year old man with no history of similar syndromes in the family, drug ingestion or exposure to environmental toxins. There was no evidence at the time of presentation of diseases previously associated with agranulocytosis (e.g.,
neoplasia
, thyrotoxicosis, chronic infection, collagen-vascular disease or leukoagglutinating antibody).
His
serum contained a nonagglutinating, complement-dependent, cytotoxic antibody, however, reactive with peripheral blood granulocytes from 35 per cent of normal donors. The neutropenia was not affected by steroids but resolved promptly after splenectomy. Microscopic examination of the spleen revealed ingestion of polymorphonuclear leukocytes by splenic macrophages. Family studies indicated that the target antigen was non-HLA and that the antibody was not absorbed by lymphocytes or platelets. We conclude that the agranulocytosis was autoimmune in origin and suggest that similar myeloid-specific immune responses could influence granulocyte tranfusion and bone marrow transplantation by alloimmune "rejection" that would not be avoided by matching only for HLA specificities.

A 58-year-old white male with a history of bronchogenic carcinoma presented with a total retinal detachment overlying a choroidal metastasis.
His
main
tumor
burden had been extirpated by pneumonectomy followed by radiation therapy four months prior to admission. With the development of a painful, glaucomatous eye, unresponsive to conventional therapy, enucleation was performed. Histologic examination of the enucleated globe revealed a metastatic
tumor
to the choroid, consistent with primary bronchogenic carcinoma. Aqueous humor and plasma examination revealed elevated ratios (Aqueous humor:Plasma) of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI). Furthermore, subretinal fluid examination demonstrated concentrations of LDH and PGI higher than aqueous humor. While the level of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in the plasma was normal (less than 2.5 ng/ml) following pneumonectomy, it was 121 ng/ml in the subretinal fluid. This would suggest that a choroidal lesion alone, in the absence of a clinically detectable primary tumor, is insufficient to elevate the plasma CEA.

A 58-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with the superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome. The patient had a 13-year history of hypocalcemia resulting from surgically induced hypoparathyroidism, which he controlled with calcium lactate. Nine months before admission, he discontinued his daily therapy and still remained in a normocalcemic state. After he had the SVC syndrome, a small-cell
tumor
of the lung was found.
His
serum calcium level decreased after radiation of the
tumor
mass, suggesting that the
tumor
may have been secreting a substance producing the normocalcemia. A substance was extracted from the
tumor
that reacted immunologically like parathyroid hormone.

Although metastatic pulmonary and pleural melanoma has previously been noted, primary pleural melanoma has not been reported. In addition, an extracutaneous response to Adriamycin chemotherapy for melanoma is documented. The patient demonstrated a continued objective response and remained in remission for 10 months.
His
death was not related to the
tumor
, and at autopsy there was no gross or microscopic evidence of other organ involvement or origin. Previously reported unusual primary sites associated with this
tumor
are reviewed, and the established criteria for determination of a primary site in the lung are reiterated. Possibilities of prior unrecognized presence of a primary site are discussed. After having reviewed pertinent literature regarding this intriguing case, we believe that all necessary criteria for proof of a first report have been met.

A family with Gardner's syndrome including one autopsy case is reported. A 22 year-old man had multiple polyposis of the colon and the small intestine, epidermal cysts, soft part
tumor
of the abdominal skin and osteomas in the calvarium and rib, and died of a carcinoma in the transverse colon and embolism of the brain. Histologically, all polyps were diagnosed as adenomatous polyp. The greater their diameter, the higher the tendency of atypism was observed. However, the polyps around the cancer were few, small, and with low atypism, and we could not obtain evidence showing direct transformation of adenomatous polyps into carcinoma.
His
two elder brothers had multiple polyposis of the colon, epidermal cysts and osteomas in the calvarium or mandibular bone, but are still alive.

The preparation of a series of synthetic sulfur-containing amino acids is described. These compounds included heterocyclic analogues of L-cysteine, DL-norcysteine, and DL-homocysteine. The amino acids were assessed for their ability to inhibit the neutral amino acid transport systems of the Sarcoma 37 ascites
tumor
cell and their inhibitions were compared with those of L-methionine and L-ethionine. Transport studies indicated that the amino acids synthesized were capable of inhibiting the uptake of [3H]-L-
histidine
in the S37 cell.

A 46-year-old man had a granuloma in the neck that was caused by extravasation of thorium dioxide (Thorotrast) by an angiographic procedure performed about 30 years previously.
His
chief complaints were dysphagia and dyspnea with mild hoarseness. Parital resection of the
tumor
was performed, but his symptoms were not ameliorated. The immediate postoperative course was unfavorable. The patient died four months after the operation from massive hemorrhages from the right common carotid artery.

Benign congenital polycystic tumors of the atrioventricular (A-V) node are an unusual but not very rare cause of heart block. Two such cases are presented and discussed in conjunction with the reported experience of other. The
tumor
is always within and only very near the A-V node, seldom involves more than the proximal end of the
His
bundle, and has not been reported to occur in the sinus node. Although sudden death has been reported in conjunction with these tumors, a surprising number of other patients have lived to old age and died of causes unrelated to the A-V nodal
tumor
. As a corollary it is important to consider a diagnosis of A-V nodal
tumor
in any patient of any age who presents with otherwise unexplained heart block or syncope. From accumulated experience it appears that such patients do not tolerate electronic pacing safely and some possible explanations for this are discussed. Escape rhythm in all reported cases has been characterized by QRS complexes which are narrow and a ventricular rate which is from half to two-thirds of the sinus rate. Reasons why an A-V junctional rhythm which is 66% of sinus rate may be especially stable are discussed.
